Sprucing Up The Sealant On Our Caravan

- After 15yrs, the exposed sealant on our caravans' fixtures and fittings were looking dirty and tired. I can only liken this to trying to clean dirty blu-tak, so an afternoons' re-sealing was in order.

Learn something new every day my sealant is dirty on the roof ( more than likely green by now ) next week I find out 😀looks a great job you’ve done may even try myself ! After I get it to it’s new home

Great job on the sealer, makes a big difference to the look of the van.
Picked up a neat trick on the net for finishing off sealer that you might find useful. When you apply a run of sealant spray the area with soapy water ( fairy liquid mix) then wipe clear with your finger, gives a much neater finish. The soapy water stops the sealant sticking to anything it shouldn’t leaving a very fine clean line.
Cheers for the tip! You're right, a wet finger certainly gives a nice clean line and what I try to avoid, is using spit on a finger, especially with silicone sealer. The bacteria in the spit makes the mould grow a lot faster! A fairy mix sounds like a great idea, nice one! Thanks for commenting and taking the time to watch 👍😀 Mart & Jo
Great little job Mart, sealant on my van is looking bit tired, I’m in process of removing locker door frames and applying new sealant. Battery box looks like a pain I’ll use this method on that . Thanks for sharing 👍

Great advice, I always check & reseal where needed every year (early spring). It ensures no leaks when away. I also take sealant & a sealant gun on holiday just in case. 😊😊

I've just spent 2 days doing exactly this, door to finish all ready to apply new sealer then rain came on, tomorrow's job. Ours is 14 yrs too.

I was just going to use unibond sealant, will this be OK. I think its bit of a gimmick to use the caravan one but what do you think
My caravan is now 14 years and I would like to reseal my caravan, shouldn't you take the item off clean all old sealant off and reseal with new sealant.
I know it's a big job but surely putting a thin bead of new sealant around old sealant which in my case is 14 years old is going to do a sound job.
My first caravan and wonting to keep and look after it,so looking for advice. Thanks
In our case Peter, it was just to spruce up the old excessive showing sealer, basically, that was was expelled and visible. You're dead right in that if an item is leaking then take it off and seal underneath and effectively "re-do" the job. Luckily, ours wasn't leaking so if it isn't broke, don't fix it 🙂 and we just prettfied the part you can see. Our first caravan too, so spent a week or two during lockdown tidying it up. Totally agree with the spit but it was a needs must type of situation 😁 With silicone sealer, the bacteria in the spit makes the mould grow but luckily enough, with the Sikaflex, it doesn't happen. I hope! Thanks for watching. Mart & Jo

I'm a sod for cleaning the 'van and when I've got a day off work, love nothing better than disappearing off up to the storage site for a brew and tinker 😁
