    Just went to an 80th birthday celebration of Gene at McCabes in Santa Monica, CA. His son Kai was there and sang this along with Carla Olsen. It was beautiful and heartbreaking. So glad this is here to listen to. Thank you.

    Absolutely love this Gene Clark composition. Recorded live just a month before he died. Such a big loss.

    Beautiful song, one of Gene's best. It would have been great to have a commercially recorded version of it However this live performance has such a haunting rawness to it and because it was recorded within the month prior to Gene's passing, the poignancy is powerful.
    Hard to believe it was thirty years ago

    That's the man. Exceptional. I opened for him in Milwaukee during his later years at The Odd Rock. The conversation we had was the best I've ever had with a person in my life , let alone a major rock talent.

    he's not gone
    Gene will always be alive
    and make us cry
    cry of joy
    the most beautiful voice in cosmic americana (a gram parsons definition)

    Gene Clark probably had more influence on my own singing and songwriting when I first started out many years ago than any other artist living or dead. Roger McGuinn influenced my choice of instrument (Rickenbacker) and my musical sound, but Gene heavily influenced my words and tunes. I met him on three different occasions, the most memorable of which was a show at Dylan's Cafe in Washington DC, I think it was mid-1988. Just Gene and his guitar and a little PA system, singing to an audience of about 30. No matter the size of the crowd, he gave it his all like he was singing to thousands.

    A heartbreaker. Urgency, regret, hope.....a desperate plea for forgiveness and a great expression of love for a particular person. An almighty song to close out both his career and life. Gene Clark was both an amazingly songwriter and a wonderful, sincere “ no holds barred” singer.
    He left early but left so much beauty in song behind....

    Beautiful. An artist with so much talent, such good looks, but just could not defeat his own demons ~ so sad.

    So many people today have no idea what it was like to have lived during the years of artists like Gene Clark. These were people who were going their own way with much to say to the world. While they told us what was in their heart and their head it brought them the means and circumstances to be trapped by things that would make so much of their life so hard. I never heard a voice so insistent and lyrics from writer that contains absolute importance in each and every word.

    What a voice and musician! This version is breathtakingly beautiful and I am deeply impressed because of Gene's ability to send his great emotions into the hearts of the listeners. Most I love Gene's solo and live performances, I don't need anything else. But it's painful to know that it was his final concert. Thanks for posting, every song is a masterpiece and gift for those who feel him.

    Yes definitely the best version Gene did. What a monster talent. And the Band perfectly accented each other, with Gene leading. Truly Magical.

    For people asking whether there is another recording of Gene doing this song the answer is yes. Before the Cinegrill he had gigs with Carla Olson and they were recorded and issued in 1992 under the title "Silhouetted in Light". Years ago I read posts of those who were at this show, I recall several said it was most beautiful performance they'd ever seen, and they truly felt he was singing personally to them, these being people who didn't even know one another.

    This is the sound of a wounded soul. Vocally, it’s not his best moment, but you can hear his soul. Props to the band, I’m sure they were probably on their toes trying to keep up with Gene.

    • @pamelahay6242
      @pamelahay6242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, “ transparent”, no hiding, no affectation. Just singing from his soul because at this time of his life, that perhaps mattered the most.
      And you’re right about the band…. On their toes and listening closely.

    Given the sound of this live recording the last album of Gene Clark could have been in sort No Other vol. 2

    was this studio recording Gene's talking about ever released?

    • @francishickory287
      @francishickory287  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it has not. I don't know if it has been verified there is one. Gene would talk a lot like that live about albums that never materialized.

    • @pamelahay6242
      @pamelahay6242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Think he would have liked to have completed another album with Carla. Ever hopeful, looking forwards regardless of circumstances. Hope is what keeps you alive and living. When hope is lost; as was Gene’s in the last few months between the Byrds induction into The RnR Hall of Fame and this final series of gigs; that’s when lives are lost. The HOF induction was a long awaited Recognition after which I believe, Gene yielded to his long years of suffering. 😔

      @@pamelahay6242 I heard all his masters burned in the warehouse fire... we may never know

    • @pamelahay6242
      @pamelahay6242 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t know that was the case as Syd Griffin & Co in UK, remastered tracks from No Other & released thise & other Originally studio recorded various versions on a LP/CD package about 3 years ago. Think warehouse fire was before that. I don’t recall which label holdings went up in smoke. NO was on Asylum. Other releases….???
