Many people relate how kind hearted Gene was. Humble and kind and always seemed happy to give credit where credit was due. Eg: his comments about knowing The Beatles .... “Well we all knew each other” , his very positive regard for McGuinn’s creativity etc 😊
I don't think many people realize how gifted Gend Clark was. His prolific songwriting was among the best and he had a unique voice and wide vocal range where he conveyed a tremendous amount of emotion. His White Light album among other solo albums demonstrates this.

I was only 18 so Gene would have been 28-29. We didnt stay in touch since I was in college and Gene was the big rock star then. It was really sad how he died so young

I am glad to say that I actually- did a show with GENE CLARK of the BYRDS- at the RAINCHECK ROOM in Hollywood- December 1980- I was a door man right down the street at the Troubadour nightclub and GENE CLARK would come in often and sit at the bar- WELL one night when my band (me "Hollywood" Joe Nania - guitar + vocals / Steve Grossman - later Van Orbitson- guitar-vocals / Andy Thorpe - bass rest in peace and / Bart Yarnold on drums)was playing at the RAINCHECK ROOM in walked GENE CLARK - he recognized me and asked to sit in with the band- so hHE did- I remember HIM sitting on a stool dressed in a blue denim jacket and pants with brown cowboy boots - 3 of the songs I recall that we did were- MR. TAMBOURINE MAN- STAND BY ME and ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN
I saw McGuinn , Clark , & Hillman On the same bill with Steve Forbert…at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ… they had their album out… and Steve had Alive On Arrival… out… around the same time. It seems like such a long time ago… now… and I guess it was… RIP… Gene and Randy… thank you 🙏 both for your music 🎶 and creative voices. 💐💐 🌎🕊️ 🌜🌞🌛

Schmidt did a great job filling the void, but Randy certainly held his own as a founding member. You should revisit their albums from their debut to Hotel California. Give them another listen and crank up the BASS. Randy had the chops and he was every bit as worthy of the "great" label imo👍🎸🎶🎵

In the late 1980s I got a postcard from Gene Clark's management inquiring about the possibility of him playing at my church basement coffeehouse. I didn't follow up, realizing that we could not have afforded him.
Fantastic interview with Gene! He wrote many of my favorite Byrds songs- Here Without You, Set Me Free This Time, Feel A Whole Lot Better and the co-write with 8 Miles High. I also really like his album with The Gosdin Brothers.

Joe Michaels was a good interviewer as he didn't interject trying to show how much he knew but let GC and RM take their time to dig up memories and speak thoughtfully. That is rare and is nice for the audience. And I enjoyed hearing GC speak of the Beatles which reminded me of how George Harrison acknowledged to Roger McGuinn his borrowing of a guitar riff from The Bells of Rhymney for his If I Needed Someone.
I so love Gene Clark , some of the MOST beautiful songs ever. I had to post here to register my utter horror at the remastered version of NO OTHER. What the hell were they thinking. It's so terrible , it's beyond belief. You can not improve on perfection. It's one of the most sublime recordings ever made. WHY????!!!!!!!
Cool interview. Gene Clark's songs were both accessible and compelling lyrical. "Fell A Whole Lot Better" comes to mind. His descriptions of coming up with music through "walking day dreams" is a great description of what it's like. He comes across as a serious, introspective, thoughtful person. And that likely relates to the music in "No Other" as the expression of his artistic presence. His reminisces about songs like "My Back Pages" beings back the experience of that great era of rock music in the middle & late '60's. And the influence goes on, like this interview. Rick Robert's song "Colorado" with the Flying Burritos. Rick Nelson's song "Garden Party" resonates.
10:26 This point about writers getting song ideas from their waking dreams makes perfect sense. I have had this experience throughout life, where you just begin to wake up and have some incredibly beautiful melody playing in your head. I mean it's so beautiful it could bring a tear to your eye. A couple of times I even tried to write it down or sing it into a tape recorder. Problem is that you have to have something ready next to the bed to capture it because the whole feeling dissipates rapidly as you transition to being fully awake.
I do have another 20 minutes of video of Gene filmed at KZOK in Seattle. Keep an eye on this account and I'll post it when I can. Have been planning to anyway. Also, a documentary was made about Gene Clark in England called "The Byrd Who Flew Alone" by Four Suns Productions. They used a couple audio and video clips from my video in their story. Larry

the dream sing thing is simply when you make or and listen to music you love constantly and always play with guitars , organs , pianos or any musical instrument youll naturally also dream about making songs and melodies and chords ect , i get that too just before i wake up at times , sometimes i record it and sometimes i just forget as dreams sometimes go as you all know . peace .
@@kai326 it has happened to me a bunch of times , that's why you keep your phone handy then you can record it right away as you wake up , and a little notebook to write down the particularities of said tune ect

Gene mentions here “Feel a Whole Lot Better” being performed and recorded by so many other artists… I wonder if he ever received any royalties from this
Tom Petty recorded the song in the late 80's and shifted a fair few copies . Unfortunately the resulting royalties led to a bit of a drug binge by Gene which probably hastened his demise. So to answer your question 'yes' , but Gene's big problem was he wanted success but he couldn't really handle it. It was always that way with Gene. Such a shame , he was the soul of the Byrds, but reading comments all over the net about him , i find it good to see a lot of people feel that way too.
Thanks. Very interesting. According to Meisner's touring history, that double bill at the Temple Theater in Tacoma on May 13, 1988 was cancelled due to Clark being sick. I wonder if Meisner had any idea he'd be back with Poco in '89. I had the pleasure of seeing the Roberts-Meisner band at Montana's in '87 and Clark's Byrds band with Rick Danko, Blondie Chaplin, Roberts and Michael Clarke at Parker's in '86.
What an interesting interview. Overall I don't know that much about Randy Meissner but Gene Clark I do. What came out was how different his version to events were that I have heard in the past. (Eight miles high Roger claims he wrote it coming back from England on the plane.) He was gracious and humble toward the other guys like McGuinn and Crosby. certainly these two aren't talking even to this day. You would think that there was great animosity. I know there was a lot of jealousy in the early days over Gene's royalties from songwriting. It would put his financial income above the others. They've all got together over the years for part reformations and concerts and things so maybe things weren't too bad after all. None the less a slice of history and I have hit the save button for this. RIP Gene.

the dream sing thing is simply when you make or and listen to music you love constantly and always play with guitars , organs , pianos or any musical instrument youll naturally also dream about making songs and melodies and chords ect , i get that too just before i wake up at times , sometimes i record it and sometimes i just forget as dreams sometimes go as you all know . peace .
Doesn’t that suck when you hear a perfectly made up song in your head in your dream and then you wake up and it all leaves you? It happens to me a lot
@@kai326 it has happened to me a bunch of times , that's why you keep your phone handy then you can record it right away as you wake up , and a little notebook to write down the particularities of said tune ect

Tom Petty recorded the song in the late 80's and shifted a fair few copies . Unfortunately the resulting royalties led to a bit of a drug binge by Gene which probably hastened his demise. So to answer your question 'yes' , but Gene's big problem was he wanted success but he couldn't really handle it. It was always that way with Gene. Such a shame , he was the soul of the Byrds, but reading comments all over the net about him , i find it good to see a lot of people feel that way too.

Thanks. Very interesting. According to Meisner's touring history, that double bill at the Temple Theater in Tacoma on May 13, 1988 was cancelled due to Clark being sick. I wonder if Meisner had any idea he'd be back with Poco in '89. I had the pleasure of seeing the Roberts-Meisner band at Montana's in '87 and Clark's Byrds band with Rick Danko, Blondie Chaplin, Roberts and Michael Clarke at Parker's in '86.
Heartbroke was written by the late Guy Clark for anyone that wonders what they are talking about. Ricky Skaggs recorded it. OK, they got to it. :)

What an interesting interview. Overall I don't know that much about Randy Meissner but Gene Clark I do. What came out was how different his version to events were that I have heard in the past. (Eight miles high Roger claims he wrote it coming back from England on the plane.) He was gracious and humble toward the other guys like McGuinn and Crosby. certainly these two aren't talking even to this day. You would think that there was great animosity. I know there was a lot of jealousy in the early days over Gene's royalties from songwriting. It would put his financial income above the others. They've all got together over the years for part reformations and concerts and things so maybe things weren't too bad after all. None the less a slice of history and I have hit the save button for this. RIP Gene.
