  • I just got around to posting an additional 20 minutes of video taken on this day at • Gene Clark additional ... In 1988, I spent a day riding around in a limo with the late Gene Clark (Byrds), Randy Meisner (The Eagles) and Rick Roberts (Firefall)... taking them around to radio interviews to promote an upcoming concert. With their consent, I video-taped most of the day with my home camcorder. This priceless video has been sitting in a box since then, only seen by a couple of my friends. Thanks to TH-cam... I can now share it with anyone who wants to enjoy it!

Gene made sure the door would stay open so i could watch for free when i was underaged and could not get in to the hotel ballroom in Orlando Fl. A wonderful kind human being to this
17 year old Byrds fan kid. It was like 1984. He will live in my heart forever.

Many people relate how kind hearted Gene was. Humble and kind and always seemed happy to give credit where credit was due. Eg: his comments about knowing The Beatles .... “Well we all knew each other” , his very positive regard for McGuinn’s creativity etc 😊

I am glad to say that I actually- did a show with GENE CLARK of the BYRDS- at the RAINCHECK ROOM in Hollywood- December 1980- I was a door man right down the street at the Troubadour nightclub and GENE CLARK would come in often and sit at the bar- WELL one night when my band (me "Hollywood" Joe Nania - guitar + vocals / Steve Grossman - later Van Orbitson- guitar-vocals / Andy Thorpe - bass rest in peace and / Bart Yarnold on drums)was playing at the RAINCHECK ROOM in walked GENE CLARK - he recognized me and asked to sit in with the band- so hHE did- I remember HIM sitting on a stool dressed in a blue denim jacket and pants with brown cowboy boots - 3 of the songs I recall that we did were- MR. TAMBOURINE MAN- STAND BY ME and ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN

Schmidt did a great job filling the void, but Randy certainly held his own as a founding member. You should revisit their albums from their debut to Hotel California. Joe Michaels was a good interviewer as he didn't interject trying to show how much he knew but let GC and RM take their time to dig up memories and speak thoughtfully. That is rare and is nice for the audience. And I enjoyed hearing GC speak of the Beatles which reminded me of how George Harrison acknowledged to Roger McGuinn his borrowing of a guitar riff from The Bells of Rhymney for his If I Needed Someone.

10:26 This point about writers getting song ideas from their waking dreams makes perfect sense. I have had this experience throughout life, where you just begin to wake up and have some incredibly beautiful melody playing in your head. I mean it's so beautiful it could bring a tear to your eye. A couple of times I even tried to write it down or sing it into a tape recorder. Problem is that you have to have something ready next to the bed to capture it because the whole feeling dissipates rapidly as you transition to being fully awake.

Cool interview. Gene Clark's songs were both accessible and compelling lyrical. "Fell A Whole Lot Better" comes to mind. His descriptions of coming up with music through "walking day dreams" is a great description of what it's like. He comes across as a serious, introspective, thoughtful person. And that likely relates to the music in "No Other" as the expression of his artistic presence. His reminisces about songs like "My Back Pages" beings back the experience of that great era of rock music in the middle & late '60's. And the influence goes on, like this interview. Rick Robert's song "Colorado" with the Flying Burritos. Rick Nelson's song "Garden Party" resonates.

Thank you so much, Mr. Wagner! Randy Meisner interviews are tragically rare; this is a treasure. Seems like a sweet man. His explanation of what "Too Many Hands" is about makes me appreciate the song even more.

I do have another 20 minutes of video of Gene filmed at KZOK in Seattle. Keep an eye on this account and I'll post it when I can. Have been planning to anyway. Also, a documentary was made about Gene Clark in England called "The Byrd Who Flew Alone" by Four Suns Productions. They used a couple audio and video clips from my video in their story.

Thanks. Very interesting. According to Meisner's touring history, that double bill at the Temple Theater in Tacoma on May 13, 1988 was cancelled due to Clark being sick. I wonder if Meisner had any idea he'd be back with Poco in '89. I had the pleasure of seeing the Roberts-Meisner band at Montana's in '87 and Clark's Byrds band with Rick Danko, Blondie Chaplin, Roberts and Michael Clarke at Parker's in '86.

What an interesting interview. Overall I don't know that much about Randy Meissner but Gene Clark I do. What came out was how different his version to events were that I have heard in the past. (Eight miles high Roger claims he wrote it coming back from England on the plane.) He was gracious and humble toward the other guys like McGuinn and Crosby. certainly these two aren't talking even to this day. You would think that there was great animosity. I know there was a lot of jealousy in the early days over Gene's royalties from songwriting. It would put his financial income above the others. They've all got together over the years for part reformations and concerts and things so maybe things weren't too bad after all. None the less a slice of history and I have hit the save button for this. RIP Gene.

Heartbroke was written by the late Guy Clark for anyone that wonders what they are talking about. Ricky Skaggs recorded it. OK, they got to it. :)

the dream sing thing is simply when you make or and listen to music you love constantly and always play with guitars , organs , pianos or any musical instrument youll naturally also dream about making songs and melodies and chords ect , i get that too just before i wake up at times , sometimes i record it and sometimes i just forget as dreams sometimes go as you all know . peace .

I am sorry. The few copies of the full interviews I sent out cost a lot more time and money than I expected. So, I won't be offering to send any more out. There is a documentary being made in London about Gene Clark's life which includes all of my footage. You might keep an eye out for it. Thanks. Larry

Larry, this is a real treasure my friend, you are a lucky guy and thanks for sharing this. I grew up and still live in Colorado and Randy was a big part of our musical past as was Rick Roberts. Rick is back in Colorado and it's great to have him back! Gene is a personal hero and there is nothing I can say that hasn't been said before. Thanks for adding this...oh question, who is the blonde girl that is seen throughout this video?

  • @larrymiller4

Incorrect. Roger McGuinn was the last surviving member of The Byrds. Gene Clark, an exceptional songwriter and vocalist, effectively quit the band in 1966 when he was unable to board airplanes in order to tour with the band, and so left to pursue a solo career.
