Loving this oil enriched enamel for black finishes 👏 and the Walmart brush and roller did the job! I still prefer whiz brand cabinets and doors white foam rollers and zibra brushes but hey not bad for the prices!

Beautiful piece, I’m so impressed with your technique. I watch a lot of furniture flippers and getting black that smooth without a paint sprayer seems to be pretty hard to do. Great job as always. Love that dresser.

I used hat technique when I first started using chalk pain. Love that it allows the wood to breath but not the rough surface. Because it’s so thick, I would apply the first coat with a foam roller and the paint thinned down a little. That lays on an even coat - which is hard for beginners. Then I brush it. After it dries really, really well, then I sand with a 400 or higher grit in between coats. Lots of work but you get a baby bottom smooth finish that. It very durable.

İf you don't have it, do not apply too much paint, do not waste it and one more tips: if the room/weather is hot, quickly paint / quickly roll it . 👌 I love this method 😍 I am thankful to you Shannon 🙏

Another awesome job Shannon! I've been doing the first coat with extra primer the second coat with just the black paint and the third coat with half and half paint and Varathane top coat. I just listed two black pieces this weekend. They're sprayed and wow they came out absolutely perfect. I just stand in the garage and stare at them in amazement. So smooth! Also mixing with matte to bring down the sheen of a satin or semi-gloss paint I may pick up. I found an entire gallon of a miss-tint valspar cabinet paint in a very pretty sage for 9 bucks. Yay! It is a semi-gloss though so the equal parts varathane matte water-based polyurethane works out well I'm up here in Charlotte not too far! Have a great week!

it looked beautiful before. I mean I wonder how many folks do research before they paint furniture? I mean some furniture OK paint it.. 1970s pieces ESPECIALLY.. but really be careful before you slap a coat of paint on an old piece of furniture. You can destroy the original finish and it's value. KNOW what you have before you paint!.

Forgive me if you have already but I was wonder if you could do a video elaborating a bit on the business side of things? You mentioned to talk to local designers and such to get business but as a beginner, what are some tips you would give on how exactly to talk to these people and how to price your time, etc. Also, how do you stay in the know on things like what is in style at the moment. I know research internet but that can be so overwhelming because there is so much information!
Anyways, I absolutely love your voice overs and your style. So entertaining and knowledgeable. Big thank you from Texas ❤️

I stick with pottery barn for inspo/trends and I charge designers $35 per hour. I just meet them through ppl or reach out on Instagram and say hi and let them know what you can do and what you charge. A lot of them don’t know what we can do with old furniture so before and after pics go a long way. I sold on Facebook marketplace the first 2 years of biz and did great there too, happy flipping! Dressers sell faster than most other items (I don’t bother with single nightstands or dining chairs, learned that the hard way 😆 )

This is perfect timing for me. I am painting my mother’s old dresser for my daughter’s baby room. She picked the same paint and color and I have two coats on and I am ready for a light sand and top coat. I’ve been debating how or whether I need a poly top coat, I think I will take your advice and mix with poly. It will never be this smooth because it’s a pine dresser from the 50s with some deep dings and lots of texture and knots in the wood, but I really wanted the top and sides to be as smooth as possible. I think it’s finally dry enough to sand today so I’m going to try it!

I love how this piece turned out! I am doing a lot of black right now too :-) I am confused though since you said the paint is oil and rich enamel, it seems like it could not be mixed with a water-based top coat and seems like it would not be a soap and water cleanup. I did get a smooth finish, for the brushes they did separate a bit more than higher end brushes which isn’t a big deal bc I rolled after but if I were just brushing would matter more and the rollers were fine but I do notice with the whizz brand I get a slightly smoother finish, very subtle difference but whizz is only .25 more than Walmart roller so I’m gonna stick with whizz for now, although I’m hoping to find a good Amazon roller soon

I followed your technique but I could not get this paint to dry evenly and it continued to have an ombré look even after the 2nd coat. Not the look I was going for. It looked as though the paint hadn’t been mixed thoroughly but it had. I’m no expert but I do have some painting experience. Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong? Thanks

    Four questions.
    1. Could this mixing of the valspar water based matte clear top coat work with an all in one paint for the final coat? It’s been 10 days since painted black. I have already painted my dresser black. It’s not perfect but I had a hard time getting such a large horizontal surface smooth. (Heirloom Traditions paint)
2.Does a top coat make imperfections stand out more?
3.Does this method work on kitchen table tops/ long dresser tops?
4.I read any sanding on a black top will show scratches. True?
    Thank you!

It’s still a waterborne paint that is soap and water clean up so the “oil infused” part doesn’t interfere with this method of mixing I have found. I could never mix a truly oil based paint and water based paint together even if I tried. I’m no scientist so I’m not sure how they infused it but kept it waterborne but hey, I’m loving the finish and it’s really nice and durable *after it cures 30 days ❤️

I've just painted 2 pieces of furniture black. I love the black but black and WHITE FARMHOUSE. The best thing about cleaning the brushes? My sink is black.

Absolute gorgeous results!! Hey when you say that this paint dries slower than others, how long are we talking about?

Thanks! It’s about an hour to touch and a few hours between coats, it’s very fragile the first week after you paint but once it cures up it’s hard as nails and kitchen cabinet type strong ya know. Takes 30 days to cure fully

Really love your channel. Could you tell me what kind of top coat I can put on white paint? Do you still recommend Varathane?

Amazing job, great tutorial! I'm surprised you do your work without a drop cloth on wood floors, but I'm messy.

Can you explain why you wouldn't sand this piece first ? .,I'm in the UK and have been watching your work ..it's inspired me to try this . I have two small set of draws in the samy shiny antique wood and have lightly sanded them already ...thanks.

Thank you for showing me how to paint something black. I’m going to give this a try. But I REALLY thank you for showing me how to wash my brushes effectively. If you knew how many brushes have been sacrificed… How do you know all the paint is out of the roller, I.e. it’s just a shadow of the black paint and won’t get on a future project?

💗 a trick you can do is use the same roller for darks only and one for clear coat and one for lights, that eases the pressure to be perfect and also after you wash it squeeze around it with a paper towel to see if any color comes onto it

Hi Shannon! I am new to the furniture refinishing world and am loving your videos! I also just used this paint and am IN LOVE!! I did make a rookie mistake though and wanted your suggestion. I’ve put one coat in, using your method (although I went thicker than you do, my mistake) and the drawers fronts are showing the spots where I put wood filler in the hardware holes and I need to sand down the fronts to get them smoother. Can I use my sander to do that (I have a Surf Prep) and what grit would you recommend? My first time using wood filler and it looks horrible! 😩 Thanks so much!! ❤️

Wood filler is really tricky, I still struggle with it! I find that going back amd filling again and then sanding again (sometimes 3 times 😅) is the only way to really make them disappear, especially when I’m working on dark colors. I also find that painting a bit of primer over the holes is helpful too, or just spray shellac real quick and then lightly sand with 400 grit so the sheen on the filled spots is the same as the dresser. It’s a pain

I am definitely going to try your technique with the topcoat and the paint mixed. My only problem is we live in Canada and I have no source for the Valspar paint. Can you recommend another brand. I love your channel.

Hey Joan! Any water based enamel type paint will work, ask at your local paint place. These hybrid oil enriched enamels are popular enough now most brands have a version of it ❤️
