- CARMAX Is Trying To CATCH A FALLING KNIFE!
In this video we talk about CARMAX. I take you to CarMax's lot and show you just how full it is and how expensive their cars are. It's clear that CarMax is in trouble and their prices aren't sustainable! I also talk about what this mean for the car market as a whole.
My name is Brandon and I am a used car dealer. I created Car Questions Answered to share the ins and outs of the used car market from my perspective. I share with you updates on car prices, what's happening at the dealer auctions, and what it's like being a dealer. My goal is to share information to help you make the best decisions while buying a car to save you money. I do not want car dealers taking advantage of you.
Thanks for watching and please feel free to leave any comments you may have in the section below!

73k for a 21 land cruiser with near 100k miles should be criminal
it gets worse, there's a 2021 with 101k miles for 70k on caredge.
I thought I overshot when I guestimated the price of that landcruiser. WTF! I am blown away!
Does fuckers are smoking some good shit😂

Guberment spending that causes all this inflation but I don't see any congress people volentarily going to prison.

@@chrisford8403 At a car lot? No I'm not. Lol
@@fredtaylor9792 LOL, I know the feeling. I bought 1 year old Sierra with 9k for 20.5k in 2016 just before things got stupid. Dirt bag Chevy branded dealer snuck a $2500 warranty by me after I said no to it. My bank told me this is not uncommon even with the big name dealerships. Later, the same dealership tried to upsell a brake job during an oil change. In a crowded service department I loudly stated that the brakes were new. Service manager apologized and told me that my next oil change was half off. Never went back to redeem it though.
Dang. Cheaper to go to Enterprise and rent a car every week than pay these monthly payments
Depending on your location, you are correct. Breakeven is in the low- to mid-$40/ day.
Absolutely spot on!
If someone can't afford a car of $50,000, then sure as hell the person can't afford the loan with a 22% interest rate.
2008 part 2 is coming FAST. All these people trying to live beyond their means with 22% interest can't even afford a bus pass. This is why they need to replace Algebra in school with financial planning courses......
I was wondering how they gave me so much money for my car when I sold it to them, now I know
@@americanbadass88It won’t work because generally it’s not a math problem. Almost everyone knows these things are stupid. It’s really more of an emotional problem. You see the nice shiny new thing that you think will impress your friends and family. It doesn’t matter that you can’t truly afford it, it feels within reach.
@@Noadvantage246people aren't being taught to think objectively or about consequences in school. Social media fuels outside of means living because everyone wants to live the lie their friends are posting about on Instagram
22% is only for the bottom barrel credit customers... carmax prob doesnt even want those customers
They need to change their name from Carmax to Car Museum.
Illinois just passed a law to limit the amount of interest you can charge. The new high limit is, get this, 35%! Couple that to the recently reported fact that half the population couldn't put their hands on $1000 for an emergency. And now Carmax wants these same people to pay over a grand a month for a used car. It may just be me, but, I think we are truly screwed.
lol what a deal!
Such a IMO stupid way to set a limit - It ought to be something like prime + 15 and even that seems high to me. I can't understand why you couldn't make money at 10-15%. Oh I know why - cause banks don't want to actually turn anyone away for not being creditworthy so now everyone has to be hit with 26% to make up for defaults and the higher prime rate. And that secured / collateralized loans are running over 10%...
Sounds like Carmax doesn't want to sell cars.
They want to maximize the amount of cars rotting on the lot
the prices are insane 🥹
No one can afford the anything because everything is overpriced and not true value
The final act in this drama might be when the "CarMax" sign comes down, and a temporary banner says "big sale here Saturday! Come for a GREAT DEAL!" And CarMax is out of the picture, and the gang running the sale is the bank that provided the flooring financing for all those cares. And, finally, the bank wants OUT!
They've changed strategy and now are into vintage cars, their lot is testimony to their efforts.
I’ve waited years to by my self a new truck at this point I’m so disgusted with the industry I don’t even want a new car or used I’ll just drive my old vehicles !

Looks like CARMAX is targeting a niche of customers with bad credit ratings and ripping them off with high prices and interest rates. They probably fully expect to repo many of these cars in a few months after selling them and putting them back on the lot at a similar price. 22% interest rate is usury and borderline criminal.
Joke is on them. It's always the bank that wins this speculation game.
Interest is criminal and that’s why Islam and even crhristianity forbid it.
and why would any one risk loaning their hard earned money to a bunch of people you don't even know for nothing.
It's a shame that the people that need a break the most are the ones that get ripped off the most. It's a never-ending storm.

I got bored and went through their website. Subaru Crosstrek from 2016 with 86k miles for $28,000🙄. On Subaru's website, for a 2023 with only 2k miles is only $32,000. 2015 Honda CRV with 115k miles was $26,000. Absolute madness.
Carmax buyers are not smart
@musclesmouse what buyers?
I think my mom bought a 2023 Crosstrek Sport (so like 3 trim levels up) at a dealer for ~$32,000. Granted that was a year and a few months ago, but ... If you're watching the price of Crosstreks, you should never end up paying more than $27,000 before taxes / fees cause that's the MSRP on the base model and you can get one ordered for you.
22% interest? WTF?
That is for someone with horrible credit. Excellent credit is about 9% and good credit is in between the two.

Not to mention those challengers are rode hard for sure
Carmax has always had high prices. They’ve never been a deal.
CarMax deserves what comes. Back when I was buying cars for new car dealer franchises if I was bidding against a CarMax buyer I cannot remember a time I outbid one. They would pay stupid prices for their cars. It's like they thought we can sell it no matter what the price is. Many times let's say the price I put on the car was $18,000 I would run it another thousand or even 2000 and there they were still bidding. Never ever got hung out to dry. Hey man! Been watching your channels for months. I have been “in the market” for a second vehicle for almost a year. I was not in a bind I had transportation. I listened when you said wait, hold off, dont buy now. Well I smashed a deal at a dealership in Houston last week. Swooped up a 2020 Sahara JLU. Stock with warranty and clean. I didn’t fall for any of their tricks. I told the salesman his job was to get me into the finance office. Why, it was a manual tranny they couldn’t sell it. I knew how long it was sitting there and it was a standard. Somebody F’d up at auction brought home a car they couldn’t sell. Thank you.

I'm parking my car and I see this guy in his Ford Lightning trying to hook his truck up to one of the chargers in the lot... He's fiddling with it, looking at the meter, goes back and forth... I realize I left my phone in the car, so I walk back to the lot. He's still there, frustrated and on the phone trying to figure out the electric charging meter, he keeps swiping his card.. i dunno if it was the meter or the truck, but seeing all these Ford trucks on the lot with 5k miles makes me think people have buyers regret. Anecdotal, I know.
There was a guy in a Ford Lightning trying to race me in my long range Tesla last night. Why would I want to do that? I think maybe some of the people that drive Lightnings ain’t right. Another anecdote
My buddies friend just got rid of their Tesla. Got tired of living around the car's needs. EVERYTHING was about the next charge and where it was. They would get up early to go charge the car for the day. Same when on a trip, got to find a charge station.
I was just shopping a Carmax here in Texas. They were selling at extreme top dollar even with 60-70k miles and the kicker… not giving you crap for your trade. Out the door with a quickness.
They offered us $1100 for an SUV we sold to a couple for $9500 and that was low blue book.
There is a chevy dealer near me that bought up a bunch of 2023 Chevy Bolt EV/EUVs at the end of last year from other dealers. I think they thought they would corner the market on them and anyone in the Seattle area would need to buy one from them. They had about 39 of them at the beginning of the year and were asking $6K over MSRP for them. Now we are about halfway through the year, Chevy has come out with a Blazer EV, about to come out with the Equinox EV. They will be making a new Bolt for 2025. That same dealer still has 32 of the Bolt EV/EUVs on their lot. They have dropped the price, but still want $3K over MSRP. Those cars are going to be worth less and less each month. With the Blazer and Equinox EVs fewer people are going to want them, and as soon as they come out with the 2025 Bolt, no one is going to want to buy a 2023 Bolt. They have to be feeling it, carrying so many of those on their lot. They are going to have to sell them for a huge loss soon.
Those cars were worthless when they were built, just saying 😅
Paid $22,500 OTD after the federal tax credit for a new 2023 Bolt EUV. Bolts are great little cars but nothing is worth over sticker.
Ha, ha. *Years ago,* I was day-dreaming of buying a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. I wouldn't be so certain that 4runner didn't come from a consumer. My stepson ordered a Tacoma in 2020 and by the time it was delivered it's used value was considerably above what he paid for it and places like CarMax were offering stupid sums for in demand cars. People figured this arbitrage out and were ordering and taking delivery of high demand cars just to flip them for a profit.
I purchased my 2017 Nissan Sentra last year (private party) for $10,500 (70k miles). The state charged me tax title and license for the value (they claimed) of $14,000. I won't touch another vehicle till the market stabilizes and isn't so ridiculously crazy.
Dave Ramsey and such keep preaching that you can get a quality low miles 2 year old car and save money over a new car. I keep looking and all 2 year old cars are about the same price when you calculate the difference in interest rates for new vs used.

If you're not buying vehicles from private-party sales then you're throwing you money away. Bought a 2013 Toyota 4Runner for $25k from a couple. Every dealership in my state for the same mileage wanted $33k and more. Owners had life time records of extensive maintenance and told me all about the use it had. That $50k 4Runner is the same thing as my 2013. If you are looking for 4Runners 2010-2024 are all the same vehicle, just a matter of what mileage you can afford.
I never saw the point in paying a premium for a low mileage Toyota. They last so long, the value proposition for a low mileage example just isn’t there for me.
I won't buy private party because it's very inconvenient. There is worrying about being scammed or robbed, there is having to request to take a car you don't even own to a mechanic and find the time for that, then there is the as-is sale with no return policy, then there is the risk of course it fails inspection or emissions. Seems like too much of a hassle to save a couple thousand bucks. Especially when my price range is around $15k.
@@raiden031It’s also difficult to finance a car purchased from a private party; not impossible, but it’s definitely not easy.

The car industry's greed is blatantly evident in the skyrocketing prices of new vehicles, making them increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. Manufacturers prioritize profit over accessibility, flooding the market with overpriced models while ignoring the financial struggles of many potential buyers. This relentless pursuit of higher margins and luxury segments reveals a disturbing indifference to the economic realities faced by the majority. Their greed not only alienates consumers but also contributes to the industry's own downfall, as fewer people can afford to buy their products. It's a shortsighted strategy that sacrifices long-term sustainability for immediate profits, exposing the industry's deep-rooted avarice.

There is a bunch of Tesla Y model cars for sale in my area up here in Maryland for like $23,799 to about $33,000. That Tesla is WAY over priced right now. People don't generally want a used Tesla. They are a pretty hard sale. That car is going to sit A LONG time at that Car Max before they lower the price enough to sell so someone. I bet it is still sitting there 6 months from today! I hope you had someone take a deep look at the car. Make sure nothing has been welded back together. Fresh welds are a dead giveaway that the previous owner had a minor scuffle with it. Unfortunately, the used car market is becoming just as risky. Dealers in some cities (not all) are trying to dump them quickly so they can force people to look at new cars, hoping to trick them into getting "a great deal". I worked in retail for 11 years. I know the dirty tricks: mark the car up $5,000, then say "Save BIG: $4,000 off sticker!" I always look at the window sticker and read the very first line. That's the price before they slap anything on it. Then I add up all the accessories/options and see if they match the bottom. If they don't, it's a sleazy dealer. I walk out before the salespeople can even say "Hello!"

Those clear blue skies in your video look great. What happens to a vehicle when it is sitting, not being driven, just sitting on a dealer's lot for 6-7 months? What happens to the battery?
