    This is actually really nice. I lost my HAM radio book in a fire end of last year, and I was planning on learning to get my technical license. However, it's been tough to get back on my feet. I still plan to make this happen but priorities are everything else. This looks like a great option for me for a radio.

    Why do you have to go through a hotspot with a android phone/DMR radio? It makes since to use the internet built in the device. It should be easy for the DMR app to access the phones LTE to access the net.

    • @bobd.
      @bobd. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, you've got all the pieces in one place, no need for a hotspot or WiFi AP to connect to the internet. Run an app on Android and use the built in WiFi to bridge the DMR to the 'net. Unless it can't do both functions (DMR radio & Android Smart Device/Phone) at once.

    • @Nicksperiments
      @Nicksperiments 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That what I was thinking. Why has no one made a Brandmeister app or even website? Maybe then it’s too hard to stop unlicensed people from using it. Actually sine the licensing is only for the original transmitting device, it wouldn’t be illegal for un-licensed people to use a Brandmeister app or website since they aren’t actually transmitting on VHF/UHF. That’s probably why they don’t allow that

    USB-C the power cable that you showed, allows up to 100 watts of charging - but I doubt a device that small can do that many watts. USB-C also allows power delivery in both directions, so if the radio is fully charged you *might* be able to charge another device from it. But only if the radio supports that feature.

      I was just about to chime in on that. Yes Android with newer phones is adopting the new USB-C standard. This will be the new Android cable. Also they plan on replacing all USB with this as well including USBs on computers. It's small profile leaves a smaller footprint allowing for other interfaces to be added.

  • @hoggif
    @hoggif 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That an interesting product. If it had more power like typical 4-5W, it could be great, assuming it was affordable. Quick googling suggested selling prices of $650-€750 depending on seller which I find very steep and a real deal breaker for me.
    Phone/analog/DMR tier II would be a dream radio as a concept, assuming it has gps and capability to turn phone off to get reasonable battery life instead of "charge couple times a day" due to all the software running in the background.
    For carrying in a pocket, some kind of foldable antenna would be great too. (that would affect receiving messages/contacts due to worse antenna efficiency but it would allow easy transport).

  • @Flashfox_Prime
    @Flashfox_Prime 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Android version - They state 6+ but don't say what it's shipped with. GSM phone bands listed on their website. Pricing $750 on their site. I am on T-Mobile and RFinder's excellent unit doesn't support 4G on T-Mo. One advantage of RFinder's unit is the automatic database updates based on where you are. If RFinder supported 4G on T-Mobile I might have bought one.

This promise was a lie with all previous USB standards. Even if you throw the device whilst plugged in! I know from experience 3 times. New cable no problem with the device. You can plug the big end of the cable in to any previous generation USB port for charging and communication at the generations speed. All USB is backwards compatible with previous generations it is built into the USB protocol / standards for USB designs and implementation. Of course if you have a USB-C end on both ends it will only physically work with USB-C but the port on you phone can connect and communicate via any generation of USB as long as you have the right cable.

    Android os is out of date and not one dmr repeater in over 150 miles in Wales. And you say everyone wants to get on dmr in 2018. First this radio and tech needs dragging into the 21st century before it goes obsolete.

      It's an attractive idea. I could put a UHF analog/dmr radio in the car using the same space that my phone uses. I doesn't have 2 meter, so I'd still want another radio. DMR is mostly uhf around here. I wonder if the FCC might even have a problem the average Cell phone user getting his hands on something that includes a transceiver he's not licensed to use. Heck, we can't legally have a radio that we can use on 10 meter ham and 11 meter CB. How do you Type Accept something like this? For now I think I'll have to wait and see.

      @Combat_Pyro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      loctite222ms you can buy it in either 440 or 2 meter. The website gives you a choice between the two but no dual band option though, so you’d have to choose one or the other.

      I know that. As I said most of the DMR in my area is on uhf but there still are a number of analogs on vhf. Not much point in a vhf only one if you're going to use DMR. Simple to switch repeater frequencies and stuff right from a plain old analog ht. DMR means fiddling with a code plug. With the recent FCC notice on Chinese HTs and their position on 10/11 meter combinations even for licensed hams, what is the FCC going to say about these things? Fortunate that they're not as affordable as all the baofengs and similar stuff out there.

    At $750.00 it is cheaper to 3d print a case to hold the combined guts of a Motorola smart phone and a Baofeng ham radio, and you can do it about the same size, so great idea, but nowhere near worth the money.

      i shoved a old phone . and a half busted IC7A as a APRS Rx in a printed case and 3 18650 cells . I do HPR so having a nice stand alone APRSdroid unit was cute.
      perhaps If you want ill pop a video on my chan how its rigged
      I would totally sink 700 bucks this combo IF it was dual band.
      also WE need to adopt USB-C as a hand held charge standard for HTs asap! andersons are great for mobile but the HT market is awash in BAD plugs. In a pinch We can use COTS phone charge gear and use that power ecosytem ..

    As much as we would like these radios (amateur and smartphones) to inter-operate, they can't. It's not a frequency thing. It's a bandwidth thing. 21st century smartphones operate at bandwidths up to 40MHz -- to transmit voice, pictures and videos. Whereas amateur radio is stuck in the 20th century with a bandwidth of 6KHz - for voice only. Amateur radio operates on the principle of individual, narrow channels (i.e. 6KHz); whereas smartphones operate on the principle of a shared broad channel (cellular/wifi). Two different paradigms. Pictures and videos require wireless broadband.
