    There’s a reason there’s the expression “busy as a bee.” These buzzing insects’ entire lives are dedicated to making sure the hive keeps humming and the next generation of bees are born. Worker bees are consistently building, cleaning and protecting their home. When they are not tending to the hive, they are foraging for food to feed the queen and drones.

    I am a beekeeper and also an ex-vegan. I still ate honey while I was vegan for several reasons. The first and foremost one being because humans don't keep bees for their products -- that's secondary. The primary reason we keep honey bees is to pollinate crops. We would need them for that even if there was no honey to be harvested. As a vegan, I knew bees are a non-negotiable essential requirement in order for us to have food, and buying honey ensures beekeepers can take good care of their bees, making sure their homes are in good repair, and the bees have food and medicine as well as giving them the gas cash necessary to haul hives criss-cross across country every year starting in California with the almond orchards and ending in Maine and Florida.
    Two, honey harvest does not harm bees. If you know what you are doing, you don't even need any protection. I know beekeepers that go out to their yards in shorts and flip flops and they almost never get stung. We can hear from the pitch of the buzzing how the bees are feeling. They're curious little creatures and they'll land and sit on your shoulders while you work. They're really very docile and sweet, highly intelligent for insects, and they'll tell you if they don't like it when you're doing something.
    Three, I eat honey was because of allergies. I put raw local honey every morning in my coffee and voila...I don't have allergies. No incessant daily itching of the eyes, throat, mouth, and ears. No streaming tears and waterfalls of snot. No mountains of tissues and going insane from itching. I can simply enjoy summer breathing free.
    Also...It's not "bee vomit" or "bee spit." It's HONEY. The honey crop or honey sac is seperate from the bee's actual stomach.
    Honey bees also make WAY more honey than they can ever use over winter. If they make too much, and they usually do, they can damage their own hives by leaving no room for the queen to lay her eggs. This is called "honey binding." In which case all we have to do is take out the full honeycombs and give them fresh empties to work with. Beekeepers never take honey until the bees have gathered enough for themselves first. For those of us who aren't commercial beekeepers, that means years where the nectar flow is bad, and we get nothing. We spend the winter feeding our bees.
    We also don't just open hives any old time. We do not like disturbing our bees, and we try to only touch hives when it's absolutely necessary. Every time we open them, we check the health of the hive and give any food or treatment necessary. Typically we only need to open a hive once a month.
    I do not think vegans will ever come to a consensus on honey. Some are going to eat it, some aren't, and neither is wrong in their decision. I do encourage vegans to make the exception with honey because buying it is VERY beneficial for the animals and the environment and really helps them out, but if it's not what you feel is right for you, that's totally fine...you can plant flowers, make a "bee hotel," and/or promote less pesticide use in urban areas during landscaping and help us out that way. :)

      honey bees are the worst kind of bees, they are an invasive species from europe, instead of just pollinating the nectar, they take it leaving no nectar for the other species of bees

    • @longtail4711
      @longtail4711 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      stale memes -- That's not entirely true. European honey bee varieties are considered naturalized, but not invasive. They've been in the United States for over 400 years now, and while honey bees can be moved into and out of a specific location overnight and that might put a stress on local populations of native bees, we have never heard of honey bees eliminating native bees from any particular spot. We aren't entirely sure though, so it's an ongoing area of study for apiculturists.
      Africanized honey bees ("Killer" bees) on the other hand ARE officially listed as an invasive species we are actively working to eradicate.
      It helps that the various species of bees don't all visit the same kinds of flowers. For example in the spring when my Rhododendrons are blooming, they are visited by our native bees, but honey bees won't touch them unless they are absolutely desperate, which hives tended by beekeepers almost never do because we feed them if they are having a bad year.
      Also while all plants produce nectar, only plants that are visited by animal pollinators will produce it as long as their flowers are open. So flowers will replenish themselves and feed multiple insects before they close.

    I was weeding my garden the other day. Working along side me was a bee. It was harvesting from snapdragons. This cute little workaholic was diving it's way into the tightly closed blossoms. It was fascinating to watch, and so charming really. It would poke it's head in each blossom, then start wiggling it's way in till nothing but it's fuzzy butt was sticking out. For a few seconds it's back-side would bop around like it was listening to some Beyonce. Then it would start backing up, pop out, maybe clean up a little, and off to the next bloom. I don't know how long I sat there in the warm sunshine just watching, but I got thirsty and brought out a quart of ice water w/lemon. My little coworker landed on the outside of the glass. I think it might have been drinking the condensation. It hoped off, sat on the rock for a few moments, then back to work. I dont know anything about if honey is vegan, but I have lived on this property for 14 years and only pull weeds or use vinegar / salt as weed killer. It's more work but, the company is good.

      In Britain they call it "received pronunciation." It is the equivalent to the American Californian accent, that is, no perceived accent at all. As I understand it, all radio announcers in GB used it until WW2. During WW2 it was dropped as the broadcasting standard because regional accents were harder for the Germans to reproduce. They were concerned that the Germans might broadcast propaganda presented as the normal evening news. Broadcasters started allowing announcers to speak with the regional accents they used in their daily lives. I think received pronunciation is still used today by most British announcers. I'm pretty sure I learned this in another TIFO video long ago.

      Good I'm glad you stick to your convictions though I'm going to inform you of something that you may not want to hear. All plants require pollination can't produce the vegetables you like to eat. This requires bees. Therefore all vegetables are the result of these and a by-product thereof. So if you truly believe anything that is a result of animals you can't eat vegetables anymore

    • @bobbyvee260
      @bobbyvee260 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      You would think crating up the hives, stacking them up, and trucking them to the farms would be. Maybe I'm missing how this is different from making honey. Thanks for the input.

    • @ZipplyZane
      @ZipplyZane 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      No. Why would it? Neither plant nor pollen is a bee byproduct. They exist on their own in nature. It's not "anything an animal has ever touched."

    • @bobbyvee260
      @bobbyvee260 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      In commercialized farms and bee keeper the bees don't live near the crops. The bee keepers are paid by the farmers to bring the bee to the crops, such as almonds. There simply aren't enough pollinators in a given area when the plants flower. This is true for most fruits as well. This means the bees have to be created up, stacked on trucks, shipped around the country trapped in these crates. This is the objection to taking the honey. If you look at the sources of income for bee keeper more comes from the farmers than from the honey. I'm just trying to understand the reasoning behind saying it is okay to make the bees suffer for pollinating but the honey by product isn't okay?

    • @bobbyvee260
      @bobbyvee260 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Exactly so the honey is a by product for getting the plants so why object to eating the honey. The bee have suffered either way.

    Very interesting question and a thought provoking answer. My girlfriend actually puts on an annual vegan food drive, and the subject of what actually qualifies as vegan has been brought up a few times, as people brought gelatin to last years' event, not realizing that it is probably the furthest thing from vegan.

    • @Magnulus76
      @Magnulus76 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, gelatin is more analogous to honey in some respects than might be apparent at first. For many years, gelatin was basically a waste product of the meat industry. It's also a relatively poor protein source, having an incomplete amino acid profile, much worse than any plant protein.

    You're leaving out the part where, especially if you use naturally bee keeping, eating honey SUPPORTS bees. Bees are vulnerable to most pesticides and their numbers directly effect all the fruit and vegetables we ALL eat. By keeping bees and giving them a safe home to return to and providing fields free of pesticides, we're bolstering those numbers. And you can't really control where bees roam, so if you're keeping bees, those bees are going out and pollinating the community, allowing those fruits and vegetables to grow as I mentioned earlier. Bees are intrinsic to ALL food production (along with other pollinators). Keeping them protects bees from pesticides, or tries to, and supports the entire food network. Besides which, a healthy bee hive produces more honey than it needs. This makes sense as that surplus is there in case of an especially bad frost or other catastrophic events. They're very efficient creatures. But this means, again, especially if you use natural bee-keeping techniques, that you are doing NO harm to the bees at all by running off some of their honey that they won't need and won't miss. You're repaying them by giving them a safe place to live.
    Look, it's still down to personal preference and if you just don't like honey, fine, don't eat it, don't buy it. And if you find companies that due treat their bees maliciously, boycott them by all means, but there is nothing inherently wrong with the consumption of honey. In fact, you're supporting the protection of bees by eating their honey and providing beekeepers with the income to continue supporting their bees. Those same bees that, without which, the food chain comes to a screeching halt. You can't grow without bees and other pollinators, you NEED them, we NEED to support and protect them. So by all means give money to beekeepers free of charge if you just want to support bees and still feel morally weird about eating honey. That'd be nice if vegan societies that reject honey did, at least, support bees in other ways.
    Which is my whole point here: support bees. And right now, by refusing to eat honey, you would be hurting bees because fewer beekeepers would be supported. If that system is still wrong to you, find another way, I'll support you. But this is what we have now and it doesn't even hurt the bees. So go ahead and eat the honey, you're doing the whole world a favor.

      House Stark, that just shows how the vegan lifestyle is based on cult teachings not ethics doesn't it! Same applies to eating insects too, it's actually less harmful to the environment & causes far less insect & sentient animal deaths, but vegans say no, even though it meets their claimed objectives & is clearly the most ethical choice, it doesn't match the doctrine so can't be done.
      Very sad!

It’s hard not to be adversive about someone that lives and enjoys a complete different lifestyle from your own, and hard to see that person affect your own family. But that yuppie boyfriend has been through his own entire universe of life and pain and introspection and self expression, as have you. To be a bigger person and not let fear affect your treatment of people is mature. Try to ease up on them instead of trying to hold your position in front of them by waving cheeseburgers around. It only hurts those that you care about, as you obviously do about your family

    This isn't a criticism directed at TIFO, but rather at the insinuation that beekeeping, commercial or otherwise, is somehow harmful to the general bee population. I severely doubt this is true, as beekeepers, particularly large operations, provide something of a haven for bee colonies. They provide hives with everything they need to survive and flourish (aka food and shelter) throughout the year and only do a little "robbing" on the side as recompense. It's a truly symbiotic relationship and, I would think, be the very definition of a vegan-friendly activity. It's also one of the oldest mutually beneficial human-insect interactions going back as far as ancient Egypt and earlier.
    While queen excluding is practiced, it's not a universally adopted tenet and many beekeepers consider it unnatural and even a bit cruel, so they don't do it.
    It should also be mentioned that beekeepers are helping to stem the tide of Africanization, as queens with aggressive genes are often isolated and destroyed before they can Africanize further colonies. Africanized hives are no joke and many apiaries won't tolerate that particularly nasty genetic strain.
    A beekeeper's first priority is the health of their hives. They certainly don't do it to inflict sadistic pain and suffering on their local bee populations.

    • @f_f_f_8142
      @f_f_f_8142 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am not sure what you mean by "queen excluding", but if it is just the practice of using a mesh to make some combs unreachable for the queen, this is a good idea, because it ensures there are no grubs in the harvested combs.

    • @fredleggett923
      @fredleggett923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps the practice of using queen excluders has one or two beneficial uses, but it disrupts the "natural state" of any hive. I've seen beekeepers talk about the pros and cons and it seems to me that, by and large, the cons win out and that queens should be allowed free and unmolested access to just about any part of the hive.
      The social structure of colonies is both simple and surprisingly complex. Artificially messing with that structure via manmade segregation seems rife with problems, both short and long-term. I certainly wouldn't do it unless I saw it had a net positive effect to a hive's health and longevity.

    • @f_f_f_8142
      @f_f_f_8142 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never heard of any cons or someone argue about it (My farther is a beekeeper). I understand that it might mess with the communication, but it seems there are no known effects.

    • @fredleggett923
      @fredleggett923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, like I wrote, there might be one or two benefits, but you have to consider the hive as a whole. Since the queen is the most central figure in any colony, not allowing her to interact with large parts of the hive (when she does so in the wild) seems like a very bad idea, especially considering how social bees are as an insect species. You don't know what stresses you're needlessly causing nor do you know how the hive will prosper (or not prosper) on a long-term basis. Unfortunately, I don't know of any scientific studies on the subject, but I personally wouldn't do it unless presented with overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

    • @f_f_f_8142
      @f_f_f_8142 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The queen can still interact with every bee, she just cannot acces some parts of the hive. Studies would be a good thing.

The point of veganism is to prevent harm to animals, so if beekeeping helps bees, i don't see a problem with it.

    On a commercial level, box hives are generally smoked, and a fair bit of protective gear is worn. On a hobbyist level you can, with a bit of care, omit all of it. Yes, you will get stung every now and then, but honey bee's are generally not very aggressive, and if you visit them regularly, they come to accept you, even when you steal the honey, so to speak.
    Flowhives, (the style that lets you sneakilly steal honey from the hive, without opening it) has some drawbacks. They are generally to small, making the bee's starve, or freeze to death if you are in a cold climate, and they justdon't work, with all bee's. Some breeds use the honey collection comb for brood, and then it's screwed, others make the honey to thick and it wont run out of the comb, and yet other times, you get crystallized sugars in the tubing, and the flow is blocked. And you still have all the problems with disease, mites, and predators, which force you to regularly open a hive to maintain it.

    • @carbon1255
      @carbon1255 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea is to minimise opening the hive, reducing their stress, and your own, as they feel less threatened. There are big ones, they are just expensive. Flowhives obviously are not the solution that will turn beehives any more "vegan" but it is an interesting idea.

      They are reducers. And are a lot less responsive than plants...
      They aren't responsive to any stimuli except if they live or die, due to moist or heat.
      Plants do with sounds. Are thought to communicate when injured. Light. Etc.
      Fungi don't.

    • @MartijnMcFly
      @MartijnMcFly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @donutchan8114
      @donutchan8114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      ccggenius12 supposedly insects lack the infrastructure needed to detect pain as humans do.
      There is a disorder in which humans can't physically feel pain, so they can get fatally injured and not be aware of the danger until they start shutting down. So I imagine that's how it is for bugs, just a little horrifying to think about too long.
      Just being a bug, trying to bug and you can't bug anymore until you just die without ever realizing what even happened.

    • @ccggenius
      @ccggenius 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The thing is, those people don't react to that stimulus, because they do not feel it. These people are saying that despite the fact that it looks like they can feel pain, they totally can't, because reasons.

    • @lsamaknight
      @lsamaknight 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I feel the pain argument is missing the point of it's use in beekeeping. It's not meant to harm the bees, it's meant to make them docile. Smoke and fire trigger a flight response in bees so it's use keeps them from attacking the beekeeper (who may simply be checking on the hive). Similarly the modern, stackable hive was actually an improvement over older designs such as the skep hive where to extract the honey the entire hive had to be crushed. Modern hives and their removeable frames were designed so that they could be removed without harming the bees, along with respecting the spacing that bees naturally use when building a hive from scratch. And it's a damn incompetent beekeeper who starves a hive by taking too much honey. Truthfully most of the objections from the vegans sound like they're based in ignorance. (Large commercial operations stressing the hives by shipping them long distances is probably the most on point. Which just means that you have to watch your sources).

      @Jacob Schweitzer Sugar would probably be more of a cause for that.
      Inuits can process fats better than any other races.
      The Western diets can be great, if you look at traditional things... But then again, everything can depending on how you use the energy you ate.
      And besides, Inuits don't live in the most temperate of climates, so having a varying degree of fat to help keeping warm better (and having an energy ressource) is a bit in their genes.

    • @LilDroidBlue
      @LilDroidBlue 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Poodleinacan I completely agree with everything you said. Sugar, especially refined white sugar is really bad, for anyone. Yes, a Western diet can be good for you, especially if you stick to whole grains, fruit and vegetables and lean protein sources either plant or animal. It would not work for them though, as you said. Their bodies cannot tolerate those foods very well, as going back centuries or even millennia that is how their ancestors have ate. It would be like me eating only meat, I would get sick.

      The moose btw are called in to the shelters by police as soon as spotted & in sub-zero conditions & police stay there until collected to keep roadusers safe, so no issues at all with meat quality & with a 1/2 tonne moose, that's thousands of dollars worth of meat and a LOT of calories for homeless people!

      @turkeypedal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      xburningindigo: what you are doing is just plain bigotry. You're making up reasons to hate people who are not like you. *Stop it.*
      As for Alois: I don't care what you choose to eat or why. What I do care about is coopting a term that means one thing and using it for another. Veganism was defined by the guy who created it to not include certain things. The natural exception doesn't fit the underlying concept, as you're still taking their honey.
      The pain argument is even worse, since cows actually enjoy being milked, and chickens do not feel pain when you take their eggs, and unfertilized eggs never get to the point where they can feel pain.
      If someone thinks eating honey is fine, that's okay with me. But don't call it veganism. And if you don't want to cause pain, then be consistent with it and eat other natural stuff and animals who are sedated so they don't feel pain when they die.

      So the point of your comment was attempting to prove that not all vegans are obnoxious? Sorry, but you *FAILED.* Big time. Your first sentence was fine-- perfect, even. Then you blew it. You call any comment that isn't supportive "hate," then you go on to call all non-vegans "close minded" [sic], and obnoxious. First, the term is close*d* minded. Second, you *are* being obnoxious, proving your entire premise false. This is why many people are sick to death of vegans. Choosing an ascetic diet doesn't make one morally superior to others, nor does it give them the right to lecture or denigrate others, which vegans like you just LOVE to do. Just go on eating your cashew butter and kale and mind your own business. You'll find that nobody but you cares about what you eat, and you shouldn't care about what others eat, either. " plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey " - the vegan society
      If you want to eat honey, then that's your choice, but you don't get to distort the definition to suit you.

    The one question I ask all vegans - why did you go that way - was it for health reasons? Or was it for moral superiority reasons. If they answer on the moral grounds I explain that trees and plants check every box regarding life - including reproduction, communication, danger detection etc. So what do they propose to eat whilst feeling morally superior? And a bee is an insect, not a mammal.
    And the fact that the term vegan has so many definitions means it's going to split into various groups.

    • @Timothy-xd
      @Timothy-xd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Plants and trees are alive but there's no evidence that they can suffer.
      Also the impact of eating animals products has such a huge impact on the environment and is incredibly inefficient.

    • @jillianm8958
      @jillianm8958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      kd1s bees don’t need to be a mammal. Birds aren’t mammals either but vegans still don’t eat eggs, chicken or turkey.

    • @jillianm8958
      @jillianm8958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      kd1s also vegans don’t go vegan so they can be “morally superior” as you say. You are ascribing intentions to an entire group of people and that is a sweeping generalization. Some vegans are vegan for health, others for the environment, others for animals. Why does it matter why they do it? It decreases harm to animals and the environment and is healthier for your body. Vegans go vegan because they believe it’s the right thing to do

    • @starrya5647
      @starrya5647 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Interesting that to you the only other reason to go began apart from health is to be 'morally superior'! For me it was on ethical grounds, but purely to ease my own conscience, not to judge others! Everyone has their own way of seeing things, and there are arrogant and irrational people on both sides of veganism (and in every other group of people in general). Believe it or not there are many friendly, kind and non militant vegans, we just don't always get a look on because of all the loudmouths.

    • @hudsontarlow
      @hudsontarlow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      sidewaysrussian sidewaysrussian If you are concerned about exploitation of workers in the fields to gather crops and vegetables, then you should look more into veganism. Because we have 50 billion animals to feed in the animal agriculture industry, 80% of all crops on our planet are grown for feeding livestock. For example, it takes 12 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of beef, so by going vegan you are contributing to less worker exploitation in the plant cultivation industry. Even if the entire world went vegan, there would be less workers exploited in plant cultivation because we would only be growing enough food to feed 7 billion people, rather than 50 billion animals.
      Secondly, vegans don’t take away all the crops from animals. As the world goes more and more vegan, we will breed less animals into existence, and therefore, plant less crops to feed them. It’s also not like our society would run out of crops if we transition to a vegan world, because as I said earlier, we currently grow enough food to 50 billion people. The only problem is that we feed that food to animals rather than humans.

    I'm confused: I thought that bees collected pollen (not nectar) and that they stored it in sacs on the legs?

    • @carbon1255
      @carbon1255 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the bees want to collect and eat nectar, the plant wants to feed the bees, so it can rub its pollen onto the bee so it spreads to another of the same type of plant. it is symbiosis. It is like fruit is evolved to be eaten to spread the seeds, it gives food for the benefit of being spread.

    Slight problem with the on-tap hives. Because there doesn't seem to be any interaction with the keeper, and nothing preventing the queen from laying brood everywhere in the hive, there's a possibility of cracking open cells that contain living brood during extraction. Then there's the fact that the keeper isn't checking on the health of the hive to verify that there aren't any infestations. Or even if the cells being harvested are full and matured. This last one could result in the honey fermenting and rotting.

  • @reversed2489

    I'm vegan, but I don't really avoid honey like the plague. I don't like the taste, so I eat things like maple(and some vegan honeys if they taste a bit better) since it's just what I can eat without having to force myself to pretend I like the taste, and it's pretty versatile. But, if I eat a treat or cereal or something and it happens to have honey, I won't freak out.

    Also considering that a large percentage of honey is adulterated with sugar syrup or the bees are fed blocks of sugar to make the honey doesn't make it look that natural. I'll just stick with other sweeteners, I don't need honey to live as much as bees do.
