      I would strongly disagree with your last point, that he is grappling with his species bias, and am inclined to agree with something you said earlier~ that he is trying to justify his selfishness, and he is indeed being extremely disingenuous. His video only goes to show that intelligence in no way equals maturity or integrity. He knows he is lying to his audience, and he should be ashamed. He is not just harming the animals he is consuming, but is essentially killing millions more by handing over this farcical argument for people to use, that would do the same.

    I think Neil’s problem is that he’s smart in his specific field of science but comes off as really dumb taking about any other complex field. This is especially the case for moral philosophy or philosophy in general as he even said: “why are you asking these questions?”

    • @ProgressIsTheOnlyEvolution
      @ProgressIsTheOnlyEvolution ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah but if you are only smarts on specifics but smart about the bigger picture, are you really smart?
      That would be like claiming that a driver who can drive fast but has no ability to control his car is a good driver, or a person who could hit really hard but can not aim would make a great boxer.
      To be smart you must be smart on every field especially the fields that matters most. I do not think Neil sounds very smart at all, compared to Einstein, Kirkegaard, or modern debaters like John Lennox or Stephen Meyer

      How is it a terrible take to be right, or smart to be wrong? You are making no sense.
      Specifically what is so terrible about my take?
      If you don't need to be smart in the most important areas to be smart in, then what is so smart or great about being smart?
      You would end with a very low criteria for what you call smart.
      And which abilities would you then have to be good at to be smart? Would any ability be good enough to be smart in your opinion?
      If Niel is so smart, then how many others would not bale smart too. Then why would smart be much of a value, and why should we listen to people who are smart?
      You would end with a lot of smart people who are wrong following your argument, why should anyone want to consider the advise of someone who is wrong?
      If you can be smart by being someone who it is not smart to follow, just because they have some abilities they lack the ability to use logically to something which gives meaning then being smart is meaningless.
      Besides Einstein was smart in many areas, and Neil is no Einstein. You would need to define what smart means to you if you have a serious argument and is not just trolling, and to troll isn't smart, for it means you have both a terrible take and terrible values and actions too.
      What could possibly be a more terrible take than to call someone smart who is illogical and so easily proven wrong?

      @goodpol5022 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ProgressIsTheOnlyEvolution “How is it a terrible take to be right, or smart to be wrong” Yeah you’re a troll lol. Being “smart” is being able to accumulate a lot of knowledge and use said knowledge in the pursuit of a goal. Being smart and being right are two very different things. There is several different types of smart: body smart, math smart, language smart etc. The ability to acquire knowledge in all of these areas isn’t always shared in “smart” people. That’s the point of specialization. That’s why you follow someone who is good in biology when studying biology but take everything else they say with a grain of salt. They simply don’t have the knowledge in those other fields. I’m not gonna argue with your pseudo-philosopher personality that frames all your arguments as passive-aggressive questions. Watching this video, I just take it for what it is.... an astrophysicist talking about something that is not his field of expertise. My hope is that knowing how smart he is, he will become more educated in the matter, and see the fallacy in his logic. Also, I do agree with him that life is precious, even that of the plants and trees. I cannot, however, in good conscience, ignore the flaw in his logic that we should consider all life is equal when choosing how we eat. I believe we have a responsibility to cause the least amount of damage and suffering we can with our existence, and until proven otherwise, the vegan diet is the way to go to achieve that.

      @@FabioPedrazzoliGrazioli Just to clarify, I don't think it is necessarily a good thing for humans to partake in the sexual reproductive cycle of other species.
      For plants it can probably be justified since plants are immobile and rely on dispersal vectors for their seeds.
      Whereas if a human gets involved in the reproduction of non-human animals, then it is bestiality and sadistic. Basically, there is a big difference between a human sowing seeds into an open field versus the human artificially inseminating a cow.

Morality is a important obligation as it comes with intelligence. It is a choice we as as species can make. It is not a thing for science to answer, but the insight that studies give us means that there is no excuse not to make a choice. And knowing consequences means that his words on other topics are slightly hypocritical. There are other interviews in witch someone mentioned this also. People change and morals change. Just along as you "give thanks" for the lives you mess up... Yep, right.. That’s some deep spiritual shit right there. Nothing remotely close to bullshiting so that he can be at ease when satisfying his taste buds and belly

    Neil always struck me as the kind of guy who put 100% of his self worth into defining himself as an “intellectual”.
    This always seems to lead to lack of self-awareness, arrogance and ignorance in a lot of fields outside his speciality. He seems to speak confidently on subjects he may not be that holistically-educated on; likely in an attempt to uphold said-ego.
    It’s so surprising to me that an “intellectual celebrity” like Neil would make such obvious logical fallacies and cognitive bias-driven perspectives. To me, this points directly to the fact that he’s unlikely to ever change his perspectives on this matter (if he’s even honestly questioned his own beliefs to begin with). He would have to admit to himself that he’s wrong, which is exactly what self-identified “intellectuals” will always refuse to do.
    Anyway, I should take it easy on him, Ed wrecked him enough 😜
    Joking aside, I do respect Neil; just disappointed in him here. I hope he can hear Ed’s perspective and is willing to revisit the topic and is open to challenge himself.

    The relevant issue isnt about the size of the animals brain or its level of intelligence, its about their ability to experience suffering
