The story of Pedro Armendáriz (Kerim Bey) deserves to be told. In 1956, Armendáriz had a role in the film "The Conqueror" produced by Howard Hughes. The movie was filmed in the state of Utah at the time when the US government was doing above-ground nuclear testing in neighboring Nevada. Within 25 years, 91 of the 220 people involved in the production (41%) developed cancer, 46 of whom died from the disease, or complications related to it. Armendáriz was recommended to Young by director John Ford to play Kerim Bey. After experiencing increasing physical discomfort on location in Istanbul, Armendáriz was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, likely a result of his role in "The Conqueror". Filming in Istanbul was terminated, the production moved to Britain, and Armendáriz's scenes were brought forward so that he could complete his scenes without delay. Though in great pain (he visibly limps in most scenes) he continued working as long as possible in order to assure his family's financial security after his death. On June 18, 1963, Armendáriz committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a gun he had smuggled into hospital. He was 51. RIP.
" _Thunderball_ " for me is the best adventure in the Bond series, technically the best made. But " _Spy Who Loved Me_ " is personally for me the most fun and beloved Bond movie.
This and The Living Daylights are probably the 2 movies I go back to most, and when I got into James Bond, Goldeneye had been out for a year and it blew up. I saw the other movies first and I remember that famous trailer where Brosnan walks out and says "you were expecting someone else?" And I'm like yes, I was. I just finished seeing Sean, Roger and Timothy and this male model who looks like he couldn't hurt a fly walks in. I've tempered my view on Goldeneye since then, maybe because of the game. But I love that this is a true Cold War spy thriller. In the books, that's his role - a Cold War spy. "We follow them, they follow us." You really get a sense, or a movie sense, of the Cold War and the "web of spies."
Something to keep in mind for the Bond films, especially in the first ten or twenty years, is how much of a big deal it would have been for ordinary people to see these amazing exotic locations, maybe for the first time. Global travel was probably way beyond the dreams and financial abilities of most people at the time, so these films really were a window to the world.
There is a little seen film starring Robert Shaw entitled "Black Sunday." It was made two years after "Jaws." It's a good one that should be seen. And, yes, the helicopter nearly hit the stuntman.
This is my personal favorite of the Connery Bond movies. It's somewhat of a debate whether this one or Goldfinger is Connery's best. I definitely prefer this one over Goldfinger, but I'm sure you'll greatly enjoy that one as well. Fun reaction :)
I enjoyed how you immediately noticed Robert Shaw's name, and yet you didn't recognise that you'd already seen him, or even until the final fight. I always notice how Bond suddenly wears a sailor's hat when he enters the boat. I know that you've already watched all the other movies, but did you notice that the Spectre henchman with the peculiar coat was played by Walter Gotell, who later got a recurring role as KGB General Gogol?
I remember when this film came out, I was just 12. Some outfit came out with a Toy attache case with the gadgets in it like the one in the movie. Then in the mid 60's the TV show The Man from Uncle and then Mel Brooks's Get Smart and the Spy Craze was in full swing. As far as Bond goes, growing up with Connery "There can be only One" and I'm just not impressed with the others that followed him.

The novel of the same name, to which the film is very true to, was one of JFKs favourite books, apparently.
It's also one of, if not the, last film he ever saw.

Bond was the worst secret agent ever. The bad guys knew who he was and why he was there from the beginning.
But nobody ever managed to kill him and he always suceeded so he was VERY good.
