- Slowly checking off the to-do list boxes on project Mossybroke the 1980 Peterbilt 359. Today we put a big fuel pump on and catch a problem that surely would've cost us a cylinder kit or worse.

In my experience it is much better to find these issues during maintenance than under full load. Glad you found it and the engine didn't crash

Be sure and remember the fuel restrictor fitting on those Detroit's- when they get blowed out not even a new pump will help - and be careful they look just like any other brass fuel fitting but it has a small hole that restricts flow back to the return line so that fuel pressure actually goes up... have fun..
There's no shame in using a crescent wrench. In fact, I think the adjustable hammer is a must have for working on junk. Anyway, I love that Pete and the way she sings!

There was a time I work in the car wash industry. We used to make our own high pressure lines. We used the same ends would cut and make our own lines. We called them reusable ends. They are awesome.

Coul hear blubber as u walked around . I like magnets in drain back areas to collect schards of broken springs and what ever else . Sounds smooth now !
Loved the ride at the end brought back some good memories listening to the 8v purr down the road I drove trucks with detroits a lot one was in a 1980 GMC Astro

Your torque wrench makes me laugh,when I was working on the Butterfly John would bust my ass for no torque wrench,told him listen pull on handle and go click, he'd get pissed go back and set in his chair,as far on injectors go for it,as John would say it could only blow up ,great video,thanks Wayne

i remember my mechanic at my trucking company in late 70s that i drove for the senior guy he worked on every engine he knew the problem before you even said anything about a problem and it was fixed instantly he was that good..i had a 79 pete cabover that did have air conditioning trouble he replaced every componet in that truck best we could get was 83 degrees in truck air wide open.that one mystifyed him and me and everyone he got real cranky when he got later on in his years he retired at 73 dyed when he was 76 but wow he was so smart he knew everything about semis all types all engines trannys air conditioning everything before scanners ect.he was just a little guy but a go getter for sure.i look back and i respect him he had a 150 trucks to deal with at that time he had 4 people under him.hes gone now but ill never forget his spitfire getting it done attitude.every time i saw him his hands where just black from grease and oils he never wore gloves or safety stuff.but that 79 pete was a beast but it wanted you to sweat air never did work right from day 1 and it was the fancier one to big bunk dark metallic brown with a orange border on stripes and 2 different colored maroon stripes running front front to back
Very odd on the AC I'd love to know what the actual problem was! Lots of them old hands have passed it's getting difficult to get any help with these old engines.
Ain't nothing better then hearing an old two stroke gearing up then hitting the Jake's, nice fix on the injector

Your a very good mechanic, an bad cylinder, you can check temperature or you can hear it. You got very lucky finding that alot of people would keep driving it till it fell apart.Your truck is very nice an clean an drives and sounds perfect. The more I watch your videos on them old Detroit engines the more I'm loving them only wish I would have been able to have run one before having to early retire, only ever experienced the 60 series think they were 450hp then when you turned the cruise on it up to like 470hp or something like that, all I know is when you turned the cruise on it sounded like you opened up the 4barrel . Keep the videos coming & we'll keep watching & loving them

I only use a Crescent wrench when nothing else works, but when I do, it's a real Crescent Wrench made in my hometown of Jamestown, NY! I searched for years to find some.

I absolutely love Mossybroke, so glad you caught the fuel pump issue on time before any major damage resulted. Sounds like open exhaust which sounds great on a turbo 2 stroke Detroit, though I personally find open exhaust a bit much if the Detroit is a non turbo.

Good ! We never run any kind of fuel around 90°corners, if you want fuel starvation go ahead . Heat and fatigue on valve springs , injector springs oiling is your best friend for carrying heat away , good job trouble shooting.

I work as Maintenance Operations Controller in a Semi-large Airline over here in Europe. currently on my first of 6 Night Shift. Just making sure things move along nicely, keeping tabs, get our Passengers to where they need to go... Love to have your videos going on one of my screens. Never worked on any of the wonders you show us, but hey.. Hydraulics and Mechanics are the same if its on an aircraft or a truck. They've always been great to me. Did you have the OG greens?
@@Ol2Stroker What do you mean? The industrial green 8V92's? No they were all silver DDEC TA ones. One was 430-450 HP I think , the other 2 are 500's
@@castirondude so the "green" 92s were from 74-80 and they were up to 435hp. They were junk. The "silver series" came out in 81 and were much more reliable. They started at 445 and went to 500 is the most ive seen automotive application. Ddecs were later started 88-89 with ddec1 the ddec2 in 89. Ddec 3 came out in 94 and so on. They only did 2 cycle through ddec4.
Your neighbors are lucky! Some landscaper in my area has some old detroit powered truck but I hear it only once or twice a year.

That is 1 gorgeous ride. Love that truck. I just had my oil pump gear shear off on my 97 12 valve. Amazing that it didnt lock up in gear housing. I'd share a photo but not sure how to in comments. Great video and very informative as always Wayno!

Threaded NPT brass fittings need proper torque to seal. 4.75 ugga dugga's to be exact. 4.70 ugga dugga's and it leaks, 4.80 ugga dugga's and the threads strip. I heard the torque click when you were putting on fittings with the pump in the vice, but not that last fitting. LOL!

Wayne, installing a higher capacity pump in a high h.p. Detroit is always a good thing. However, your work is in vain if you didn’t open up your restricted fitting from R80 to R 110 to take advantage of the extra fuel that is now just bypassing in your fuel pump causing heat & not giving you more flow which what you need to do for cooler fuel at injectors. What I would surely recommend is that you open up your secondary fuel filter IN from pump to 3/8” NPT & use a R5 hose in 1/2” id instead of the the 3/8” line. I don’t know your serial number but what you also need to check is if your fuel stanchions are the larger bore, if not , drill them out to accommodate the increased flow. We always installed a standard size transmission cooler on rad to route the return fuel to the tank as our owner/operators that ran South always lost power when fuel tanks got low & the ambients went into the 90’s. All these upgrades were done in an accredited Detroit Diesel shop with a Clayton dyno to back up our experiments.

Sounds awesome as usual Wayne. I always love to tell this Detroit story.....I worked at a earthwork company and they had a General 14 wheeler with a 6 92 in it. One day I happened to be in the shop helping the mechanic and the young girl that drove said General came in and said " my truck will only back up "........we both said "what ?" She said again " my truck will only back up " the mechanic and I both realized what had happened and ran out and yup.......smoke outa the air cleaners hahaha. We shut her down , fired her back up and sent her back out. Love those old things.

Put a 6v92 together,dropped it in the truck,fired it up sounded good till couldn't back up,put timing gears on wrong side, complete bummer

Back in the Day. My ex-boss bought 3 brand new, same spec 84 freightliner. Silver 92s 15spd overs. 411rears. We hauled steel on flats with side kits. They were 475 92ta Silver motors. They were bullet proof. No leaks. Wicked bad fuel mileage. Next new truck was a 86 freightliner cabovers with a 425 air to air. 13sp. 370s. Got almost 2 miles to the gallon better. LMAO. Those 92s were fun to drive through. Keep Up the Great Work. Stay Safe. ! 🇺🇸👍

Good catch there Wayne. Boy I totally agree it's not the best time for the injector upgrade just before a major road trip...go with known reliable and play around with upgrade unknowns closer to home.
