Did you know that Julie and Lesley Ann had a musical role in common? Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Julie played the lead in 1957 (it was written with her in mind) and Lesley in 1965 (her first lead role). And I agree you should react to The Music Man. Robert was fantastic as Prof. Harold Hill.

A bit of a forgotten gem by Blake Edwards is "S.O.B", which is a hilarious satire of Hollywood in the 70's to early 80's. Based on Edwards' own career, it has a star cast, including Julie Andrews doing something that our titular hostess might very much approve of. It's a bit darker in tone than Victor/Victoria, which might be why it didn't hit the box office all that high, but it's still IMO one of Blake Edwards' best movies, right next to his first 3 Pink Panther movies.

I love this film. Blake Edwards was a genius directing comedies. Everyone remembers 'Victor/Victoria' and the Pink Panther movies but they forget some of his other films. Two of my favorite are 'Operation Petticoat', set in WWII, with Cary Grant and Toy Curtis trying to get a pink submarine out of Japanese controlled waters, and 'The Great Race', with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Natalie Wood, in a land race from New York to Paris in the early 20th century. Blake Edwards had a perfect hand at the continuous scene play. He did it in the Pink Panther; he did it here as well. He was also the perfect producer for the musical style 60's and 70's movies. This was his last entry of this type in the early 80's. Both my sister and I love this movie to this very day.
We used to watch it back in the VCR days at least once a month. We were just so hooked on it.

Thank you so much! This is one of my favorite films! It was great to see both Cinderellas in this film together. Julie Andrews played the original Cinderella in Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957) and Lesley Ann Warren played Cinderella in Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1965).
So it's a joy to see them both together in this film as well as the rest of this amazing cast.

Delightful reaction to this terrific farce. I think this is Blake Edwards' masterpiece. Nearly everything he directed before, especially the Pink Panther movies, The Great Race, and Breakfast at Tiffany's were setting him up for this piece. And while I loved Julie Andrews as an actress even as a kid, I never fully appreciated the remarkable range of her voice until I was older. What an extraordinary instrument, and so tragic how she lost it due to a botched operation.

I will just say, I haven't been able to watch the channel much lately as I haven't seen a lot of the movies that you have chosen to react to, but I still appreciate both of you for going for so many deep cuts. Don't ever change.

This is the second time Julie Andrews and James Garner starred in a film together, The first one is The Americanization of Emily (1964). It is an anti-war movie. Both Julie and James said it is their favorite of their films.
This is the second time Julie Andrews worked with Robert Preston. They both starred in S.O.B. in 1981, a year before this movie. It also was written and directed by Blake Edwards

Shoutout to the patron who made this happen! I can't believe how all my favorite reaction channels whiff on this movie every Pride Month. I think it's one of the greatest comedies ever made, which necessarily makes it one of the greatest queer films ever made. I don't know how it stays under the radar these days. It's a classic, and extremely progressive.

best thing i ever saw Robert Preston did was a an old, old, 1970s PBS special-- "The Man Who Corrupted Hadelyberg," an adaptation of an old Mark Twain story. Fred Gwinn co-starred with him and it was just a fantastic performance all around. It ends a little abruptly, i'd say because of budget (hell, Henry Fonda introduced it), but a good performance.
in some other universe, Robert Preston was given his own anthology series where he played a trickster god, standing over the smouldering wreckage of his handiwork as he narrates tales of hubris and pride.

Wow, that sounds interesting. Imdb says it was made in 1980, and is only a short film, running just 37 minutes. I think this was part of a series of Mark Twain adaptations made for PBS around that time.

Love the fact that Blake Edwards always use's his stock cast of supporting actors, many of whom are British TV comic stars. But the film is just so clever and Robert Preston and Leslie Anne Warren steal every scene. Leslie almost managed to steal the movie LIFE STINKS from Mel Brooks.

I am SO glad they went with Robert Preston over first choice Peter Sellers. Sure Peter might pull the role off fine. But subtlety isn´t his forte. I fear it would be Pink Panther all over. if anything he´s better suited for the private detective or even jealous night club owner. Plus Toddy is above all equally as amiable as witty. That should ooze off the screen.
