Obviously Peter Sellers is great, but I think Herbert Lom as Dreyfus deserves a huge shout out as well. To me he is equally hysterical, the laugh, the eye-twitch, he's really a brilliant comedic actor.
One of the many things that drew me to my long term partner was his excellent Dreyfus impersonation❤️

Same. Herbert Lom is a Great dramatic actor as well, but his comedic chops were on a par with Guinness and Seller. Someone mentioned Ladykillers, and just this year I learned that Guinness’s role was originally written for Alaistair Sim, and if you think about it, Guinness’s performance is a great homage to Sim.

For my money, this one is the best movie in the whole Pink Panther series. Just that long opening sequence "in the shadows of Paris", abruptly interrupted by the titular shot and cut to the animated credits with that amazing Henry Mancini tune, is masterful.

Older movies often used very long, continuous shots. It wasn’t until later that quick cuts became more common. These days, a long continuous shot gets noticed because it’s so unusual, but it used to be the norm. Often they approached a shoot like they were recording a stage play and the actors were used to doing 5, 6, 7 minute long scenes.

As an FYI, Herbert Lom and Peter Sellers acted together in an earlier crime/comedy, "The Lady Killers", also featuring Alec Guinness. Produced by the English film company Ealing Studios, which specialized in small, very darkly humorous stories. Among their other treasures: "Kind Hearts and Coronets" and "The Lavender Hill Mob". For Sellers, it's an early role for him, so it's true he doesn't quite stand out beside the others; but, one of the gifts of Sellers' talent was his ability to be unrecognizable from one role to the next - a standout for him there is "Dr. Strangelove", where he plays three parts, each one its complete own.

He became a worldwide star with 5 films in a short period - I'm Alright Jack (1959) - Lolita (1962) & Dr Strangelove (1964) Both directed by Stanley Kubrick and Pink Panther (1963) where he was the co-star to David Niven and then starring in its sequel, this film. A Shot in the Dark, is supposed to be a Prequel to the Pink Panther. This was a decent "Pink Panther" movie. The whole billiards scene was genius. "he killed her in a rit of fealous jage!"

More Peter Sellars? I recommend The Mouse That Roared or Murder By Death. For him in a more serious movie, Being There.

First movie, The Pink Panther introduces Clusseu. The Pink Panther was the name given a flaw in a Pink Diamond. It was a Jewelery Heist movie. Sellers introduced the Character. Shot in the dark was the successful follow up. .

"The Pink Panther" was a perfectly fine movie, but "A Shot In the Dark" was the one that truly established the universe of the Peter Sellers "Pink Panther" franchise that we know and love.

Here is some "Shot in the Dark" trivia for you: the movie was based on a play that originally had no connection to the Pink Panther franchise. Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards hated each other so much by the end of filming that they vowed never to work together again (though they eventually made three more Panther films in the 1970s). But MOST IMPORTANTLY, Zack Snyder owes his career to this film, after Edwards's karate instructor suggested that he film some of Cato's martial arts scenes in slow motion.

The Pink Panther cartoon was invented to introduce the movie, Pink Panther. It was the first episode of a series involving Inspector Cleuseau. If they ever do a reboot of these movies, they need to cast Johnny Depp as Cleuseau.

The part I can't believe you DIDN'T comment on: "She was having an affair with my husband." "You're a fine one to talk: your husband was having an affair with my wife." That 90 or seconds has me in stitches every time I have watched this movie. But damn, just how in hell did those actors hold straight faces for that long? You might notice it was basically one long take - and Peter Sellers was a notorious giggler. So you know that had to take an eternity to get on film. But worth the effort - it's one of my favorite scenes of all time.

A Shot in the Dark is amazing. If you ask people to tell you what kind of comedy movie the original "Pink Panther" is. They will often describe this one. Its kinda like how you ask people what the "Mad Max" franchise is and they describe the look and action of The Road Warrior and NOT the original film that started the franchise. Its like they are both sequels that re NOT sequels.

The Pink Panther series is great, but this is without a doubt the best Clouseau episode.
Also, when they are in the nudist colony and Maria says "look at my goosepimples", that single note on the guitar that we hear, that wasn't played by any of his fingers. LOL

Peter Sellers was one of THE all-time greatest comedy writers. He was one of the four stars of the radio series "The Goon Show" which was truly groundbreaking in the field of comedy. You should check out "The Party", which is beautifully subtle yet hilarious movies of its era.

*A Shot in the Dark* originally wasn't supposed to be a Pink Panther movie since Sellers didn't want to do another Inspector Clouseau movie. They tried another actor for the sequel of The Pink Panther movie called *Inspector Clouseau* with Alan Arkin. That movie bombed and Blake Edwards (producer, writer, director of The Pink Panther franchise up to the reboot with Steve Martin) convinced Sellers to be Clouseau in *A Shot in the Dark.* To make this movie the sequel to The Pink Panther.
*A Shot in the Dark* is the best & funniest Pink Panther movie in the franchise.
Note: *A Shot in the Dark* originally was a Broadway play.

William Peter Blatty was a brilliant comedy writer, and it shows even in his horror stuff. Exorcist III (written and directed by him) has some really funny exchanges between Lt. Kinderman and his friend Father Dyer.

"A Shot in the Dark": Everybody was cheating on everyone else/sleeping around, Inspector Clouseau was assigned by mistake, the maid was always in the wrong place/wrong time, licenses were a mystery to the Inspector, and the Commissioner nailed the guilty parties trying to kill Clouseau. Oh my, I forgot Clouseau's man, Kato!

FYI, this was supposed to be a murder mystery drama, but there were problems with actors and director. Blake Edwards was asked to finish it, he got Peter Sellers on board, and they redid the script.
