    I'm a senior. I have heard and read and seen videos of ancient cave art for much of my life but never like this. The actual tools of the artist(s) laying right there next to their creations for at least 10,000 years! Not only depictions of animals painted on the ceiling and walls but the artists themselves and beautiful sculptures as well. Amazing. Whatever words I have would not do justice to this video that is itself a work of art. NORTH02 should have his own history channel. There are a couple of folks on TH-cam that could join him and create a stellar learning experience.

      @@LolaMontezxo Yes, definately! All of you are right. There is some collaboration between some of the channels, but more would definately be better!
      The TH-cam channel called SAMA or the "Study of Antiquity and the Middle Ages" is an effort at something like that. It still exists, and it was a great channel with the potential to become SO much more, but around 2 years ago the owner Nick died suddenly, at about 35 years old, leaving behind a young wife and newborn child.
      Nick's narrator has tried to keep the channel going, and he does a good job, but he does that on a partime basis, in addition to his day job and family, where for Nick it WAS his fulltime day job. It was intended to be his career and his future. He made many great videos, and was so full of ideas, plans, and enthusiasm, so his channel was growing faster than average, until an awful heart ailment hit him almost right out of the blue.
      Nick made so many videos that are still here on his channel, and his passion for history shows through in them. Many are on ancient and pre-history, which is partly why I think the name is a terrible one that doesn't describe the channel well.
      Partly to try to build a community of history loving TH-camrs, he did interviews with other historians, archeologists, podcasters and channel owners. His enthusiasm showed, and it was so infectious! The loss of Nick was a big blow to the fledgling history community here. He would have become a real force to be reckoned with, in a good way.
      As well, around 6 months before Nick died there was actually an official set of collaborations by quite a lot of the history TH-camrs, working together in various ways. I forget exactly who was involved, but there were many of them, so the set of videos was quite large. (But I don't have any idea how many.) Unfortunately it wasn't advertised very well, if at all.
      I believe the entire set was picked up by one of the commercial streaming services that focuses on history (for a monthly fee). It may have been History Hit, or something similar. Somehow the name Wendover Productions is on my mind as being related to this group of videographers, but I don't remember how it was connected.
      Those videos must still be on YT too, or at least a good sampling of them, but I think they're scattered over the channels of the people who made them, and they're not marked or indicated as such, which is a pity. Maybe someday they'll do it again, and hopefully advertise it more. I'd sure look forward to that!

      @moseyburns1614 I'm a professional visual artist but this has me stumped, too. Will let you know if anything occurs to me! All I know is, it is certainly deliberate and has a particular significance - it's not accidental and certainly not a "lack of ability". I just can't imagine what that significance is, though.

    • @dccalling5960
      @dccalling5960 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@nilcarborundum7001 There are some cultures where an image of a person has power over either the viewer or the person depicted or both. Or there are practices and rituals where if a spirit sees you then you will be stolen by them. If the art was meant to illustrate stories or specific events, perhaps the difference in style between the animals and humans was to protect the souls/spirits of the humans in question, both the ones depicted and the viewers by denying the form identity.

    • @nilcarborundum7001
      @nilcarborundum7001 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@dccalling5960 That's a very good point! The other thing that occurred to me is that anthropologists (and artists) recognise symbolic, abstract representation as a more developed, more sophisticated procedure than mere representational "illustration". Taking that as read, I'm still mystified by the mixture of two such different approaches in a single collection of images.

    It really is amazing that we have cave engravings of specific individuals from 15,000 years ago. Not merely generic human forms, but specific people with life stories, memories, families, wants, needs, desires, and other human things. The humanness of them in my opinion makes them possibly the most remarkable and fascinating art of the Magdalenian (although don’t get me wrong, all of their other art, especially their spearthrowers and cave art, is remarkable as well). This is really impressive work. The content is extensive, well organized, and well delivered. I don’t think I have ever seen a presentation of Paleolithic art this comprehensive. You still have the sources pending, and since I’m not in the field I don’t have a clear conceptualization of how much work it was to gather and compile all the information and images, but this comes across as a truly monumental effort. I did not realize so much well-preserved, high quality, material had been recovered in Europe. Beyond that, the overall production is nicely polished. To me, it seems like you’ve been upping your game with each video and have now crossed some line and definitively gone pro. It’s great to see your progression as a documentary creator. I think you can feel really proud of your achievement here.

    But also they represent the full proof of how well trained these artists must have been. Ever since I studied at a school of art back in the 1980's it has amazed me how blunt this has been viewed by those art "proffesionals" of my days and long after that too. You talk about them practicing before they painted on those cave walls, but the thing is that the outside world rocks and cliffs out in the open we're almost certainly covered in paintings as well. It's not that they only painted deep inside caves, and went back there to paint as a unique, special thing. It's that they painted all over, but in the subsequent tens of thousands of years the paintings were all destroyed, except the ones deep inside caves that nobody else could easily get to.

    56:15 This is also a deer giving birth, not a bird on a deer. Her tail is up over her back and the fawn’s hoofs are emerging. The plane it’s portrayed in is with the whole stick horizontal, and the fawn in the ground. It is the moment the mother braces her front legs and pushes.

    Amazing work as always! I'm always blown away by the level of love that comes through in all your documentaries, North -- especially how your friends have been so willing, time and time again, to dress up as Paleolithic humans, knap flint, scrape hides, chuck spears, and stare contemplatively at reproductions of various artifacts!
    If I could ask, what's the name/artist of the painting that is shown several times, of a man dancing and playing the flute while wearing a bison hide? It shows up several times, such as at @1:33:36.
