  • Swallows are among the greatest flyers in the bird world. In North America, we have 8 species that nest here and I explore 7 of those in this video.
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. He has taught classes about birds and other wildlife to groups of all ages and brings that knowledge to the customers of his retail business every day. Very awesome, Mark! Thanks for posting a video of a great family of birds. They are all great birds, i didn't know about the northern rough winged swallow having the longest wings in comparison to its body. Thanks again!

You forgot to mention the last species of swallow that occurs in North America: the Cave Swallow of the South and less commonly, the East Coast

The rest of the adults and sub adults will filter in over the next several weeks.

Do tree swallows ever build nests on a log house wall below the underhangs

Tree swallows are true cavity nesters. Sounds like a Barn Swallow

That sounds more like a Northern rough-winged Swallow. They like crevasses

@@MarksBackyardBirds mark, did my homework. That is exactly what it is (rough winged swallow). Thank-you for pointing me in the right direction. I live in the northern edge of mixed forest in the countryside north of Manitoulin island in Ontario. Rose breasted grosbeaks are nesting nearby. Even saw indigo bunting and Baltimore Oriole once each last week. Put out orange half's and finch feeder, but they never came back. I guess I have to be thankful for seeing them. Thank you for replying back. Not many people do. Learning alot from your videos. Have a good day. John
