funny you commented this.. been hooked on this recording/footage for over a decade but not even sure when I started realising the way this was shot and edited felt so extremely "modern" (I'm an 80ties baby lol).. because yeah you're spot on..
I cannot watch this enough. I remember first hearing her “What a Difference a Day Made” playing for the end credits of a movie. Don’t recall the movie but she’s stuck with me ever since.
Did anybody go to the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival? Can you believe it? All the BEST were THERE! I just wasn't quite born yet so I missed it, how bout you? Here's to you Dinah! Lovin it 65 years later 💕
What gets me with this is the diversity in the audience of age, colour and fashion. All different people appreciating the amazing thing happening in front of them. So great to see
Me too! I had to do a double check when I saw the year this was filmed… 58?! Amazing - Ah-may-zing!! Thanks so much for sharing, this music brings me back to life❤️

I fell in love with Dinah Washington when I was thirteen ...... her song "What a Difference a Day Makes" was getting constant airplay, and I just loved her voice. By comparison all the girl pop singers around then just sounded like Minnie Mouse
I agree, there is next to nothing of Don Elliot's solo, scarcely anything of Terry Gibbs' work. Too much audience of which none is synchronised to the performances at the time.
Loved Dinah. Did anyone catch the portrayal of Dinah in a play at the Gramercy theater in NYC in 90's by Lilias White? She was Dinah reincarnated. I believe it was titled " WHO DINAH WAS" . Anyone?????
I really wish that the videographer and/or the editor had spent much more time showing us a great performance, rather than all those ridiculous shots of the audience !! She deserved better......... but glad to see live footage of her. Thanks for posting.
This could be a classic if not for showing so much of the white hipster audience. Dinah and Terry Gibbs exchanging on the vibes is absolutely priceless. We want to see people playing their instruments and singing.
And that's the point, thanks to this we have a beautiful document, it's a pleasure to watch the years that will not come back. Very good idea, atmosphere, clubbing from those years! Bravo.
The video is even ahead of its time. This kind of filmography wasn't popular until the 1980s. That's wild

One of the great artist ever.
Yes just love dinah how she gives this her all heart& soul...lovely take all of me
I had no idea a concert video like this from the 1950’s was even possible
It was a film
@@guypaulas opposed to what?
The girl with the hat is the most elegant and full.of style EVER. And her joy is authentic ❤ Such a great video, so ahead of its times

Blinding !
She has such a watery and mercurial voice.
Caves me in !
One of the first albums I bought 60 years ago was Dinah Washington at the 58 Newport Jazz Festival. Marvelous.
Oh Dinah was so good.
"Come on daddy and get all of meeeeeeee...."
First heard this in the 70s. Still kills me every time.
I love her voice. As a little girl my parents useD to play her records on Sunday, which was their day to play records. I fell in love with her then.
Not many better jazz/blues/popular singers than Dinah. It was tragic that she died at only 39.
Check out Amy Winehouse's love for Dinah. It's even more tragic. Cheers.
I've read that she played piano beautifully. It's nice to see her holding her own on vibraphone with Terry Gibbs.
Is Terry workin' it or what? Love this.

I was born 7 years too late. Believe you me if there was a way I could of attended this staggering event, I would have bent Time itself.
My Dad went. Year before I was born.
Shots of happiness while singing.
Lovely camera work, lots of beautiful people on stage and in the audience, all happy, black and white, great film.
I just realized these young folks in the audience are in their 80s now
What a beautiful moment in time
Esto es hermoso, Reina Dinah.
Why aren’t there a million views and a million likes? Dinah’s got what it takes!
Ha ha. Americans don’t appreciate jazz. We like commercial crap fed to us on the boob tube.
I love her❤

Way back before we had an agenda driven insane media who feel it their job to tell us constantly what they see as our faults..
This gathering of racially diversed people could only happen in 1958 in a place like Newport not anywhere in the ignorant South.
Simply Divine!!

Fantastically talented. Gone too soon.
My uncle made me listen to it in 1982. I was 24 years old at that time. ya
Now compare, what we are missing nowadays. I know back then it wasn't perfect but this is just sheer Bliss.
It is gorgeous !
Listen to Samara Joy baby, Jazz is alive and well. We’ll keep swingin around the sun forever☀️🎺🎷
What a beautiful video
Dinah is a Queen
What a lovely time everyone is enjoying in this video, relaxing and magical. 💗
Killing. ❤
holy shit this is the best muhrica ever produced

I love that tune too. Amazing
Wow 😮 👏
Sinto como se lá estivesse. Muito bom!!!!
it dont get no better than this!
Such phrasing
So good!
My dad had this on VHS. I remember watching it in the late 90s.
Love and adore Dinah
This is golden footage
I miss when smartphones didn’t exist 😢 that’s when this type of love in the air dissipated
Maravilhoso!!!! Clássico 👏🏻
1958?! With this quality??!
This is genuine gold!💥💥❤️
Melhor versão de todos os tempos. 👏🏻

Que cantora maravilhosa! Perfeita. 🥰😍
I'd like to see a remix of this film using just the footage of the musicians. I had forgotten how much screen time is devoted to the audience.
Too much
I agree, there is next to nothing of Don Elliot's solo, scarcely anything of Terry Gibbs' work. Too much audience of which none is synchronised to the performances at the time.
I always thought that this highly regarded film was rubbish visually
@@martindavidson5591 one of the best photography artists of the time put this together 1958 He was a master
Well, the two could co-exist as I love seeing the 1950s audience, and I would love to see more of the musicians too.
Love Dinah Washington
Classic movie. Maybe the best on jazz
Más Swing imposible 🔥🎙️❤️
Bravo 👏🏻
Increible . De esto no hay más ...
Dinah sang this song!
wow and thx!!!!
Magic : )

Wynton Kelly!!

Music is universal man! They were feeling it that’s all that matters ❤
Yep, my grandparents were cooler than I'll ever be.
I can imagine Jack Kerouac could gave been there, with Neal Cassady.
Not to put too fine a point on this, but it looks more like a film of the crowd with a backing track.
all live i've seen the film many times
Was this originally in black and white?
Is this really 1958? I'd have guessed it looks like the early 70s.
She died in 1963.
this does not look 1970s at all lol
BLAM!
Terrible camera work. The worst I've ever seen. She is so good and I'm seeing the audience?
And that's the point, thanks to this we have a beautiful document, it's a pleasure to watch the years that will not come back. Very good idea, atmosphere, clubbing from those years! Bravo.
