I don't think it's talked about much of how close we were to collapsing as a country in 1998-1999, it's a wonder that only east timor and aceh really flare up into open conflict in the aftermath of Suharto's downfall.

**[TNO Custom Mapping] Indonesian Uprising: Civil War 1998** In an alternate history scenario where Indonesia is on the brink of collapse in 1998, the civil war erupts after the fall of Suharto’s regime. This scenario could be inspired by the chaotic political, economic, and social climate of the time, but exacerbated by alternate historical events. The "Indonesian Uprising" can feature multiple factions vying for control of the country, presenting an intricate and fractured landscape, similar to what we see in *The New Order: Last Days of Europe* (TNO). ### Historical Context for the Scenario In this alternate timeline, Indonesia’s financial collapse following the Asian Financial Crisis becomes far more catastrophic than in reality, leading to widespread unrest, rebellion, and factionalism. The fall of Suharto after 32 years of authoritarian rule creates a power vacuum that various groups seek to fill, resulting in a brutal civil conflict. ### Factions in the Indonesian Uprising Civil War 1. **Republic of Indonesia (Government Loyalists)** *Leader*: General Wiranto *Base of Operations*: Jakarta *Ideology*: Authoritarianism, Military Rule *Description*: The remnants of the Suharto-era military regime, led by high-ranking generals who refuse to surrender power. They aim to restore order to Indonesia through an iron fist, fearing the country will fall apart if democratic reforms or regional autonomy are allowed. Their main support comes from the military and conservative elements within the government. 2. **Democratic Reformists** *Leader*: Megawati Sukarnoputri *Base of Operations*: Surabaya *Ideology*: Social Democracy, Reformism *Description*: A coalition of pro-democracy activists, intellectuals, and moderate political figures. They seek to establish a democratic government in Indonesia, emphasizing human rights and decentralization. Their movement is inspired by the ideals of Sukarno, Megawati’s father, who led the country to independence. 3. **Islamic Insurgents (Darul Islam Movement)** *Leader*: Abu Bakar Bashir *Base of Operations*: Western Java (Banten) *Ideology*: Islamic Fundamentalism *Description*: A revival of the Darul Islam movement, which had previously attempted to establish an Islamic state in Indonesia. These insurgents take advantage of the chaos to push for the creation of an Islamic caliphate, rejecting both the military government and the democratic reformists. 4. **Communist Remnants (PKI Guerrillas)** *Leader*: Unknown *Base of Operations*: Central Java *Ideology*: Marxism-Leninism *Description*: After being brutally suppressed in 1965, remnants of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) have regrouped to wage a guerrilla war against the government. They aim to establish a socialist state, and their struggle is fueled by anger at decades of repression. 5. **Free Aceh Movement (GAM)** *Leader*: Hasan di Tiro *Base of Operations*: Aceh Province *Ideology*: Acehnese Nationalism, Independence *Description*: The Free Aceh Movement seeks to achieve independence for the Acehnese people, who have long felt marginalized and oppressed by the central government. The group has strong local support and wages an insurgency in the northernmost part of Sumatra. 6. **Papuan Separatists (OPM)** *Leader*: Kelly Kwalik *Base of Operations*: Papua *Ideology*: Papuan Nationalism, Independence *Description*: The Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) is a Papuan separatist group that has been fighting for independence from Indonesia since the 1960s. In this scenario, the OPM takes advantage of the civil war to escalate their fight for an independent Papua. 7. **East Timorese Guerrillas (FALINTIL)** *Leader*: Xanana Gusmão *Base of Operations*: East Timor *Ideology*: Timorese Nationalism, Independence *Description*: East Timor has been occupied by Indonesia since 1975, but the East Timorese resistance movement (FALINTIL) continues to fight for independence. With Indonesia in disarray, FALINTIL intensifies its operations, hoping to finally achieve freedom. ### Key Events in the Indonesian Civil War Scenario 1. **Fall of Suharto (1998)** Following mass protests and international pressure, Suharto steps down, leaving a power vacuum. His departure sparks a fierce struggle between different factions, each hoping to shape the future of Indonesia. 2. **Jakarta Riots** The capital city becomes a battleground between government loyalists and reformists. As the military cracks down on protestors, Jakarta descends into chaos. The riots signal the start of the civil war. 3. **Acehnese Insurgency Escalates** The Free Aceh Movement launches a full-scale revolt, seizing key towns in Aceh province. Their success inspires other separatist movements across the archipelago. 4. **Communist Uprising in Java** In Central Java, PKI guerrillas emerge from hiding and declare a revolutionary government. They engage in guerrilla warfare against the Indonesian military and other factions. 5. **Islamist Offensive in Java** The Darul Islam movement declares the establishment of an Islamic state in West Java. They begin an offensive to expand their control, clashing with both government forces and reformist militias. 6. **East Timor Declares Independence** Taking advantage of the chaos, FALINTIL declares East Timor independent. Indonesian forces in the region are stretched thin and struggle to suppress the rebellion. 7. **Foreign Intervention** Neighboring countries, such as Australia, Malaysia, and the United States, become concerned about the instability in Indonesia. There are rumors of covert support for various factions, and some countries consider direct intervention to prevent the conflict from spreading. ### Map Design For a custom mapping project for this scenario, you could create a map of Indonesia depicting the areas controlled by each faction. The map would show the division of territory across the archipelago, with different colors representing the control zones of the various factions. - **Jakarta**: Stronghold of the Government Loyalists - **Surabaya**: Base of the Democratic Reformists - **Western Java**: Controlled by the Darul Islam Movement - **Central Java**: PKI Guerrilla-held territory - **Aceh Province**: Free Aceh Movement control - **Papua**: OPM control - **East Timor**: FALINTIL control ### Potential Outcomes 1. **Military Victory**: The government manages to crush the various uprisings, but Indonesia remains under authoritarian military rule for years to come. 2. **Democratic Victory**: The Democratic Reformists manage to unite the country under a new democratic government, but at the cost of massive destruction and loss of life. 3. **Balkanization**: Indonesia fractures into multiple independent states, including Aceh, East Timor, and even a communist-controlled Java. 4. **Islamic State**: The Darul Islam movement succeeds in establishing an Islamic state in parts of Indonesia, leading to further conflicts with secular factions. 5. **Foreign Intervention**: International powers intervene, resulting in an occupation or partition of Indonesia. ### Conclusion The "Indonesian Uprising: Civil War 1998" scenario offers a fascinating and complex alternate history setting, with a wide range of factions, ideologies, and possible outcomes. It would make an excellent TNO-style mod or mapping project, with various paths and events that could be explored.

Similar conflict happen during The Sampit conflict, Sampit war or Sampit riots as both was an outbreak of inter-ethnic violence in Indonesia. The conflict started in the town of Sampit, Central Kalimantan, and spread throughout the province, including the capital Palangka Raya. The conflict took place between the indigenous Dayak people and the migrant Madurese people from the island of Madura off Java.
