I can only imagine what the original Dark Souls players felt. After playing Dark Souls to death, after waiting for so long, lived through all those years up to this one moment, and being hit with these 3 notes...
Cameron Cornish said it best on the Soul of Cinder's battle and music "Three notes... Just three... And everything came flooding back. We left the asylum... Fought through Lordran's broken and twisted world... Struggled against Ornstein & Smough... Found the four great one's souls... Saved Oolacile from Manus and The Abyss... Cried because of Sif... Then found Gwyn as the hollowed and abandoned god... We awoke in Drangleic... Sought out four great souls again... Discovered Vendrick as a hollowed and broken king... Sought out the crowns of three kings from different ages... Received Vendrick's blessing to break free of the curse... Fought Nashandra for the throne... Then left the kiln with Aldia to find a cure... We were born again in Lothric... Hunted down and returned four great souls that linked the fire from their ages to their thrones... We were sent to the kiln of the first flame... We journeyed up a familiar path to an open area... In the distance we saw a flame with a single knight standing guard... We fought this knight only to realize this knight was all of us... Every single player who has ever linked the flame... This knight was a mage, a priest, a spearman, a thief, a warrior, and a pyromancer... A valiant fight that ultimately led to us being the victor...... But In a desperate attempt to stop us, the knight rose once more with flames pouring from every part of its body, bringing back the raging soul of a god from a long forgotten age... The three notes played... And... We were broken... We wanted to stop fighting... We no longer wanted to link the flame, kill this knight, be the chosen undead, the bearer or the curse, or the ashen one... We just wanted someone to sit by the fire with us... And for the first time ever, we felt someone who understood our pain really could join us by the bonfire.... Ultimately though, the final strike was made and this ancient soul fell for the last time... The husk of a god finally put to an uneasy rest; lost in the annals of history just like his son, his knights, and his kingdom... We went to the bonfire... And our fire keeper stood there smiling... Grasping the flame like an infant, she allowed the fire to soon extinguish... "Darkness will shortly settle... But one day tiny flames will dance across the darkness.... Like embers linked by lords past." Standing beside her, the world fades to black as we see the final shred of light die away... "Ashen one, hearest thou my voice, still?..." Thank you, From Software for letting this series end as gently as the first flame did. We will never forget this immense gift you've given us."
Im so jealous of the feeling that og ds players mustve had when hearing this for the first time after waiting years for this moment. Was too young to understand these games back then. But I can imagine the goosebumps if I get them now.
Underneath all the souls that were burned.., one still remains burning.. only resurfacing as needed always as a final test to see those that are truly worthy to link the flame... the lord of Sunlight, Gwyn.. harboring remnants of a lord soul, the soul of light. The one that first sacrificed themselves to the flame.
one of my favorite bosses only because of the call back to gwyn (mostly the soundtrack), always makes me shed a tear. such a great end to a trilogoy, same as slave knight gael
Mannnn this fight threw me so hard since I went through souls games and did everything on each game from ds1 to 3. Memories certainly came flooding back
The first time I got to the 2nd phase I died because I had tears in my eyes and I couldn't see anymore. When I wiped my tears I died. It definitely hit me hard when I head Gwyn's theme and it was very unexpected. In an instant I got back memories of my first Dark Souls playthrough and nostalgia hit me like a truck. After beating the Lord of Cinder I instantly put my sign down and started helping people beat him just to hear the music again. What an experience and emotions these souls games have given me...
If you fight nameless king you may recognize some of his movements. it's because it is his son.. but also he has ornstein moves because he's buddies with ornstein.
I remember my first time playing I had started this journey since the first one and I love every Dark Souls when I started hearing that music, my eyes without even a slight warning just started to overflow with tears it got to the point where I couldn't see the PC screen and I was grinding my teeth in pain when I had to end that journey
This brings me back to when I used to cosplay Solaire and put my sign up right in front of this boss fight. Just so you could fight alongside each other in jolly cooperations, one final time.
The way FromSoft use repeating phrases of music as storytelling is just... CHEF KISS. Recent favourite is the final boss of the ER dlc, reprising a theme from a battle from the base game but in more triumphant form.

the second i heard this and saw the jump attack i screamed "GWYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYN YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES", i became so happy and shocked that my no hit mode turned on, the perfect way to end a series.
I never played any ds games until a few months ago. I played DS1 for 100+ hours, and finally moved onto DS3, and when I got to this boss and heard that theme, as saw those huge, sweeping sword swings, I lost my mind, I got so excited. This is my favorite final boss of all time.
I still didn't know who he was, why he was here, what we were fighting against... until these three notes rang out. Everything was clear, that strange feeling had an answer. This final bossfight is a masterpiece, Fromsoftware doesn't tell us the whole story, they let us feel and realize it ourselves.
Nah it was the heartbreak from seeing the lightning. Gwyn couldn't use lightning when he became the Cinder. it was Solaire. That was Solaire's lightning. He linked the fire and now we in 3 have to slay the cinder that was Solaire to finish the story once and for all.
I was in the car with my dad. He lets me play music and stuff while we drive. So first a played ds1 Gwyn’s theme then I played soul of cinder. And he actually understood what it meant, do good job to him I guess.

I didn’t notice the plin plin plon because I was to busy raging

would you believe me that some people recommend playing ds3 first?

Nameless king also has plin plin plon but its not as tragic sounding a lot more regal and imposing. He is gwyn's firstborn son after all.
I literally shed a tear on that moment

Miyazaki really put Kitamura Yuka to work with this one.
To this day after listening to this song so many times, the hair on the back of my neck still stands up in reaction to the plin plin plon.

when it hit the plin plin plon i emoted and got brutally skewered

Bro the last boss is pure peak cinema man.
Since the Soul of Cinder is an amalgamation of all the lords that ever linked, I will forever believe that the phase is Gwyn taking over the body

Same. But tbh I don't regret it, seeing the come down and rotten Anor Londo in DS3 first and then seeing it in all its glory in DS1 was awesome.
