ASMR Let's Talk #13 - Generational Goals / Creative Frustrations / Finding a Partner

- Welcome to a relaxing, whispered talk where I share my thoughts, experiences and perspective, while often trying to be as objective as possible, about the following topics suggested to me:
1. Creative frustrations and the tendency to self-destruct because of depression, nihilistic tendencies and/or having too many ideas, and how to keep that creative fire burning in spite of all that. Believe me, I've been through that mental anguish. But I feel that by shedding all conventions and traditions, not focusing on making money, not caring so much what anyone thinks (good or bad), not thinking or over-analyzing too much, trusting yourself, trusting in the idea, embracing it and never questioning it, goes a long way towards total creative freedom and happiness.
2. Today's generation versus my generation. Mostly in regards to what one wants to be when they grow up in today's world, which is probably a timeless question regardless of where one lives or their economic and social status.
3. Lastly, not so much dating or relationship advice, nor am I trying to emulate Dr. Phil, but rather my thoughts on how people probably should avoid the mindset of finding that "perfect" person or that "perfect" relationship, since perfection doesn't exist. But how people can find someone that they are very compatible with. Also talking about how it truly takes time to get to fully know someone, and thoughts as to why certain relationships go south especially in regards to one's troubled past. With 7.5 billion people on the planet and growing, with each person having their own life experiences that no one will ever fully understand, and with plenty of people looking for someone, surely everyone can find at least 1 other person out there they are compatible with to build a happy life if that's what they want.

3:14 A little bit of nihilism never hurt me. My philosophy is completely nihilistic. But, if you grow to understand it more, it goes both ways. Basically nihilism means: "we all die, so actions of life or even having a life to begin with are inconsequential because there is no greater cause." But this also means "we all die, lets have a giggle and fuck around 'till then, got nothing better to do."
I'm more pessimistic than optimistic, but I'm still trying to work out how my mind works. Idk if this mindset will stick with me or not but it works well so far.
TLDR: nihilism is ok sometimes
This is only my thoughts when I was depressed and struggling with finding my world view: I noticed that when I was being more nihilistic in my approach to life I generally felt really awful, there was really no clear path for me. I realised that I was completely free to do anything but nothing felt like it had any value. This experience got me to realise that I felt way better with a more classically existential approach to life. By setting actual goals, I could measure myself and from the progress I was making I could derive a lot of pleasure. From my experience a random approach to life is not very fun. I felt extremely lost and confused. So when you say "we all die, lets have a giggle and fuck around 'till then, got nothing better to do." I am not sure I agree ;)
I don't agree with this because I agree with the premise of life being inconsequential as we all die, but that's completely unrelated to the concept of fucking around till then. I have discipline and work ethic - not for some "greater meaning" but because delayed gratification actually makes you happier and more successful. I don't need there to be a higher power/purpose for me to want happiness and success in this life. I don't understand how people relate the two.
Well I probably sound like a deep special snowflake wannabe now so I'm just going to go.
There is healthy nihilism and unhealthy nihilism. Depends on the person really. I dont think life has any meaning and yes we all die, but because of that im trying to be as happy as i can in the moment and seek enjoyable experiences. The unhealthy kind of nihilism can easily devolve into "nothing matters so why even bother"

Eph, I thank you so much, I'm a teenager and I've been stuck in this rut of what to do with my life and I am one of the most creative person I know, and I still don't know what to do with these ideas and brain. I've tried making board games, video games, I'm programming now, I want to do photography, I'm gonna try writing and becoming an author, and I tried art and drawing. I have so many ideas but I don't know where to go or what thing I'll be best at or what I should do. You showed me that I'm not alone and you have experienced this. I thank you Eph, from now on I will ry my hardest whatever that comes naturally and that I like most. Thank you so much Eph, this is literally the best youtube video you have made for me. Thank you.

If you're asking me if smoking is a good idea, I'd say probably not, it does so much more harm than good, if any good at all. But because you smoke that doesn't make you a bad person, just work on it and if you're dedicated you can rid the habit.

I always write when I am depressed.
In fact, I believe that I write even better, when the depression strikes again.
I don't mind anymore. I kind of embraced the feeling of sadness and melancholy and I try to turn it into something productive.
Such feelings are part of me and as such I believe that it might have to deal with them in my own way or accept and utilize them in any way possible.
And if people can be a bit happier through the stuff that I do when I am down, then I should stay creative especially in those times of sadness.

For me it's very simple: if you are making art for the money, they you're not making art but just running a business.

Oh, and as a side note: Hell yeah, go Margaret. Bending or warping your art to fit the specific mold others expect is absolutely beyond what compromise you should ever make for your passion. If you give up on a character/subject/art simply because they are 'odd' or not the norm, then you are giving up on what makes your art unique. So ALWAYS keep Margaret. Always keep any of the ideas/characters/art that Margaret represents, those things that are unique and quirky, and you.

At least I think it was an Indian idea... some of those yogis had an real obsession with nothingness that's always fascinated me. Maybe your nihilism is your way of tapping into the cosmic consciousness and pouring out all this creativity you have. I've always been inspired by your creativity.
I remember I lectured you once about God and it feels pretty silly now. I've been talking to lots more people recently and I realised people have such different ideas and interpretations of concepts. I even started questioning what counts as "alive" and that's a really interesting rabbit hole to go down. I realise my interpretation is very abstract and spiritual - to me everything is alive and we're all part of this infinite super organism.
There's so many interpretations of reality though, y'know. Subjectivity is so much bigger than people realise. So much bigger. It's like there's all these - well intentioned I guess - folks who want things to be objective and fit into neat boxes but that's not how things are. Things are not so easy. So it's like nobody really knows the truth and actually that makes things more fun. Life is less boring when we can all say "what if..?" :D
You were born in the early '70's? I'm also from the '70's but a bit later. I was a very cool decade really because we saw the Atari 2600 onwards, which is the birth of video games and both of us would have seen that entire evolution from crappy sprites onwards. I guess the Cold War had a big effect on me. All of us could have died at any moment, life was precious. I think it taught me to appreciate little things like the sky or the grass or a breeze. Really small things that could be taken away by nuclear hellfire at any moment.

This is coming from a gamer so if you want to ignore what I'm saying because of who I am because I'm making a "self-defense" feel free to do so, lol. But games nowadays can be not only a hobby but a job. I intend to be a game developer and I'm working at a project at the moment, and even if I game all day, that's what I enjoy doing and I don't find it destructive. It made my find out that I don't like college or all these "common" professions out there, I like to be my own boss and make my own stuff, and making games is also a creative process like you said in the video, expressing art... maybe I have a "passion" for this exactly because of the amount of time I spend playing, but that's life...

I'd love to get some discussion going on Nihilism sometime. Personally, I take a somewhat 'nihilistic' approach to life, but that does NOT mean that I take a depressing and sad take on life. On the contrary, the fact that we are here by random chance, that nothing actually matters, and that death is inevitable, these things are UNDERSTANDABLY scary to most, but I find great comfort and motivation in knowing that not ONE person can tell me i'm doing this whole 'life' thing wrong/right. Nobody knows what the hell we're doing, and that's super comforting.
I absolutely agree that the view most people imagine when they think 'nihilism' is a very self-defeating and depressing take on life. Nihilistic views that take motivation from the lack of 'meaning' however, are in my opinion a wonderful and warming philosophy to take on. Not "nothing matters, why bother", but instead "nothing matters, so why not try?".

As for the bit on creativity, that's a subject I struggle with CONSTANTLY. I've always associated myself with art, and identified myself as an artist first and foremost. I've always practiced art, been talented at it, and planned to go into it. The issue i've had though, is that DESPITE all that, i've NEVER been fully able to picture myself getting into art as a career. My problem is, that AS SOON as my art becomes a job, a task to complete, a deadline to meat, then my art becomes a massive chore instead of fun, and I have NEVER been able to get over that slump if i'm just not feeling that 'artsy' magic flowing.
So after a few years of 'soul searching', built up money for school, and taken medications and seen a psychiatrist to deal with my past Depression/un-diagnosed ADD, I've felt my brain slowly but surely be organized, alphabetized, and sorted. I've realized that though I will ALWAYS be an artist, and I will ALWAYS do art, my career lies in my OTHER passion: Physics. Yeah, kinda feels like polar opposites sometimes. Having my brain suddenly not feel like a constantly cluttered and chaotic mess all the time, i've been able to realize that I study science FOR FUN, at least as often as I make art, and I simply hadn't even realized the I was constantly ignoring an even bigger passion. I had repressed my love of science and physics as a possible career, as I did not see myself as organized, motivated, or (most importantly) smart enough to make it as a physicist. Now i'm not one to think i'm stupid, I can see potential in myself just fine, but while art was always something that came naturally, I felt that a subject that (at least as I saw it at the time) seemed like the polar opposite to art would by default be something i'd be bad at. It almost felt narcissistic to be passionate about both subjects when they are so extremely far apart in most peoples minds. Even now, it's hard to find people that don't tune out what I say immediately after hearing the words 'quantum physics' or something (nothing complicated, just the words is where I lose them).
Anyways, rambling aside, I think that art can and should always be something that you do on your own terms. Something you do in uniquely your own way. Even if you don't want to make art that you FEEL is that 'unique', every single person has different methods and different preferences on how they do things with art. Finding that artistic motivation, and that inspiration, is TRICKY. Once you find it though, hold onto it, and don't ever compromise on loosing your grasp on it ever. Whatever you need to do to keep hold of that artistic spark of inspiration and creation, then run with it to the ends of the earth. I will be going to school for physics in the fall, and hopefully moving on the path towards a degree in the field eventually, but I will NEVER stop making art, regardless of the field/job/position in life.

That’s kind of cool to think about the fact that people are very different. I took up guitar and used a positive view of my future to overcome my lack of impatience. I was originally in a defeatist attitude when I tried to draw and when I tried writing. Somehow guitar scooped me from that hole.

The two brains thing is actually really cool. Basically there are two halfs to your brain but only one can talk. there are people who jave had the connection the two use to communicate severed and the left side of the body does one thing and the right does another but the speaking side of the brain has no idea what is happening with the other side of the body.

I love writing and I used to do it all the time, long and pretty elaborate stories! But recently, like the past 5 months I've had writer's block and it's pissing me off so much. I really do not know how to get rid of it. I've tried sitting down, forcing myself for hours trying to write but it doesn't help at all. I've tried staying away but that hasn't done anything either. I've started to think or assume it's just something that'll go away with time and you can't force through or break it. Right now I'm just waiting.
What I take away from this video:
If you are a creative type of person, don't over think things, sometimes you just gotta do it.

Oh boy, video games, that's a subject I have already written a whole lot about, but I'll keep it short:
Yes, I can surely identify a few downsides, but also a number of upsides, so I'm not so sure it's really any worse than other forms of entertainment, like, say, reading a book. Anything, really, can be destructive if not done in moderation or done without supervision. I remember how I as a child -- before video games even existed -- read a whole lot of books and spent a lot of my free time at the library, instead of doing other things that I may have been better off doing. In the same vein, I was out in the woods a lot, not seldom on my own, instead of etc...
The thing is, video games is just a medium among other mediums: the main concern should be what's being done with the medium. Video games as a medium also, in my opinion, happens to be the ultimate and most multidisciplinary art form out there. As a child, though, I was actually very much against video games when first introduced to them, but then, to cut the story short, I got into creating them and a whole new world opened up before me.

One cool idea you could do is a fallout 4 themed one where you're a representative from vault tec and the vault you represent is a tingle vault
