Quite possibly, but only if CSX and the other freight lines would keep the rails better maintained and share them more consistently, you would be onto something there. I ride CSX rails multiple times weekly going into and out of DC and the rails get very sad in several stretches where we stop, switch tracks or slow to a crawl. Sometimes the 45-minute commute takes two hours. Compared to Europe's train system, we suck.

    - American cog railway
    - riding a trainset ordered from and made by Stadler Rail in Switzerland
    - on rails ordered from Poland
    *Mr. Worldwide*
The idea for this railroad came in 1888 after a trip to the summit by inventor Zalmon G. Simmons. Simmons had designed a wooden telegraph insulator while on the board of directors of Western Union, and was surveying Englemann Canyon for telegraph lines to the top of Pikes Peak. It was a miserable two-day trip on a mule and after his return, Simmons was convinced that there needed to be a more "civilized" mode of travel to the summit of Pikes Peak and decided to fund the construction of a railway

I haven't had a vacation in 34 years! Work work work! I remember, when I was 5 my family and I rode a train from cincinnati,oh to new Orleans, LA to visit my grandfather. The dining car, the sleeper car. I will do it again and want to share it with my children and grandchildren. I'm 62 now, so that train ride was long time ago. You never forget and neither does a 5 year old.

You deserve that breath of fresh air, take it from a random stranger online!

The Pikes Peak Railway was one of my favorite trips when I went to Colorado. I wish you had the chance to make it to the top because there’s an awesome visitors center where they sell donuts. At least you two had a chance to drive up the mountain! Also, please make sure you buy cans of oxygen for the train. They sell them all over Colorado, particularly at Walmart, you definitely need it for the railway and higher altitudes in Colorado!

I now know how my Dad felt going to the Movies as a kid and watching the serials like FLASH GORDON and THE LONE RANGER. You would watch the current chapter maybe once or twice and had to WAIT A WHOLE WEEK for the next installment. There may be ways to see them all sooner but then that would ruin the fun of the anticipation. I have currently moved back home to help take care of my Mother. She is 87 and needs just a little help. Waiting for the next Downie Live train adventure helps the time pass and things don't seem so bad. Thanks For Bringing Us Along.

The fact such a beautiful and important railway was almost destroyed in favor of cars...I'm glad Spencer came to his senses and decided to let the highway and railway coexist because this rail really is unique and provides spectacular views just as much as the highway does. And it's nice to have two options, especially when you can't reach the summit on one.
Fun fact, there used to be a funicular in the same area too called the Manitou Incline that opened in 1907 and operated under the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Got some bad luck though. First the original summit house was burned down in 1914 and had to be rebuilt, which the rebuilt one was replaced in 1958, but if that wasn't enough...it had to shut down PERMANENTLY in 1990 because of a rockslide that washed out the rail bed and it was just too costly to fix. It is now a popular hiking trail.

Writing from Australia, the island Continent. Late to the channel, but it's interesting reading comments from people who have never or rarely travelled by train, whereas for most of my life I've tended to travel by train in preference to flying or driving or as an alternative, flying to my destination then using trains, rarely or never driving as my means of transport when I get there. However I did have to drive from Denver to Manitou. Mike you have facilitated a lot of rail travel for these folks and that's a good thing. Did this railway in 2008. Nice to see a new train here now.

Though I don't live there currently, I'm from Colorado... and I always forget just how many cool things there are to do there! It's been years since I've ridden the D&S or gone to Pike's Peak. And I love Manitou.... I have family members there that run some of the businesses in town... Garden of the Gods is another great attraction near Manitou. Can't wait for the next installment!

THAT LOOKED AWESOME! I think I like the car ride up ! As long as it’s a rental 😃 I have driven up Mt Washington in NH a few times and it’s hard on a vehicle. Great job Mike! 👍👍👍

I go to manitou all the time, love the area, glad to see you feature it. My dad was even in a movie filmed in Old Colorado City which is next to Manitou.

Great video Mike! I was just at Pikes Peak two weeks ago but I drove up too. Got some great photos of the train though!
I stayed at the Broadmoor a few years ago too for a work conference and it had to be the fanciest hotel I have ever or will ever stay in! I wanted to go on the cog railway back then but it was closed for renovations at the time.

Love this! I rode the Cog in 2008 and my then 3 year old quietly laid on the ground once we reached the top from lack of oxygen! Luckily the gift shop pumps extra oxygen 😅! We were living in CO Springs at the time but she wasn’t ready for the thin air at the top. I’ve never been in the Broadmoor so that was fun to see. Thanks for the great content!

The air is thin up here in the mountains of Colorado 😆and we really crazy Coloradoans like to hike around way up there too, Glad you guys enjoyed it though!

Great episode! I rode the Cog Railroad once years ago. It was clear all the way up, then completely clouded over during the 45 minutes we had to be at the summit before the train started its trip back, so no views from the top. I was also light-headed up there, but they told us to drink lots of water which definitely helped. So my time at the summit consisted of visiting the rest room and buying water at the cafeteria. The clouds cleared for a beautiful descent down. The views were amazing going up and coming down, with mountain lakes and the occasional "whistle pig" (yellow bellied marmot) along the way. Michael is right, Manitou Sprints is very charming and the Broadmoor is beautiful. We visited the Broadmoor for breakfast one morning and then walked around the grounds - much cheaper than staying there.

We have good friend who's house is up above the Broadmoore. I have pictures from her back porch looking down at the hotel. She is also the last neighborhood before you reach the Cheyenne Mountain zoo. So there are time you can hear the large cats roar from her porch as well. I grew up there in Colorado Springs. It is a beautiful town and well worth spending some time in.

Glad you decided to drive to the summit since the Cog Railroad couldn't. I did the Cog Railroad there in 2014 and got to the summit. Cars definitely look more modern. I'm a fan of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Imagine racing to the summit up that road!

Pikes Peak is also famous for the hill climb (and descent) races, which are pretty dangerous since it’s the same road, just with cars going well past the speed limit. An all electric VW has the fastest time up the mountain (just under 8 minutes!)
