I remember asking for a playstation 2 when I was about 10 years old. I had never played console games so everything I knew was just from my imagination really. My dad asked what I thought of the dreamcast and for some reason I immediately got the mental image of some sort of playful castle in my head. To me, it sounded like a lesser-than option to the ps2, which of course was more expensive. I didn't want to be a brat so I said it sounded cool. Goddamn I loved that system. crazy taxi, chu chu rocket, virtua tennis, nhl 2k, sonic, mvc2, soul caliber. Such good memories.
+Sex-E Coco I wouldn't play it for that long. Maybe 1 min then throw the game in the garbage where it belongs. Pity I have beaten the first 2 games because a friend of mine is so into them and he dared me to do it. I wanted to stab myself in the face when I was done each game. Shenmue is SHIT, plain and simple. Overrated shit. I would rather play the shittest Nintendo game than ever touch that series again.

It's true that Sega's B.S caught up with them, but i think it's important to remember that Sony changed the entire face of gaming. It went totally mainstream after the phenomenal success of the Playstation, and Sega just couldn't compete with Sony's marketing power or brand name by the late 90's. If Sega had Sony's money, they could have afforded to support the Dreamcast longer. Both Sega and Nintendo were applying old rules to a new game and they misjudged the market severely. Nintendo were lucky that they had the Wii otherwise they could have potentially gone the way of Sega.
Everyone always says sega does what nintendon't. Nobody's in the wrong with that whatsoever, but, my belief, sega does what nintendoes, or did, but in its own way.
Dreamcast it's still my console number 1, I just love that crazy stuff :). PSO, Jet Grind Radio, Tony Hawk, MDK2, Soul Reaver, Daytona USA, Ikaruga, Conflict Zone, Wild Metal, Soldier of Fortune, Omikron The Nomad Soul and even new games for that system! It's just GREAT! LOVE IT :).
when I was a kid I never really cared about the sega dreamcast; lol I remember my dad asking me if I wanted a dreamcast for Christmas lol he was like,"cmon its a lot cheaper!" and I was like..................."NOOOO! I WANT A GAMECUUUUBE!" lol its just that the dreamcast didn't really have any games I wanted; I was a huge Nintendo fan at the time.... shit I still am!..... lol I remember I just got out of Nintendo 64 era so I was really looking forward to what Nintendo had next up their sleeves! lol they had super smash bros melee, luigi's mansion, super Mario sunshine.... gamecube had so many games I wanted! especially smash bros and luigis mansion! ... I had to get it lol! sorry dreamcast, you were truly an amazing console at the time! its just that Nintendo and sony had all the games and rep people wanted!
Readme: They got it wrong. EA didn't publish on Dreamcast because SEGA was still making 1st party sports games with Visual Concepts(former EA affiliate). SEGA offered EA third party sports game exclusivity. EA and Bing Gordon were outraged, EA said they weren't releasing any EA games. A similar situation happened to the Genesis. SEGA asked EA to slow their port of Madden to fix their NFL game, Joe Montana Football. The difference, Joe Montana Football sucked and was inferior in every way to Madden(93). NFL 2K was actually good and EA didn't like competing. If Trip Hawkins was there, it would've been different
5:39 - I know this is 8 years ago, but I gotta call out this stupidity. So the Sega developers wanted to make a Latin music-themed motion control game with lots of cutesy animal characters. Sure, there was no real Samba dance moves featured in the game, and they threw in a lot of Spanish music which doesn't have anything to do with Samba. They wanted to give the game a Latin look, so they threw in a lot of costumes and other visuals inspired by Samba/ Carnival mixed with some Mexican style. I would argue that, yes, it would have been nice if they had consulted with real Brazilians and Mexicans when making this game to give it at least a shred of authenticity. But how in the hell is Samba De Amigo "blatantly racist?" There is no mean-spirited mockery nor exaggerated negative stereotypes. Mexican entertainers really do dress up in large, colorful hats. Samba dancers, especially those who participate in Carnival, really do wear outrageous costumes. Over the years, I have played this game literally with at least a dozen Latinos and Latinas who were Brazilian, Mexican, Dominican, Guatemalan, and Honduran. Some liked it more than others. Many pointed out that it's not "real Samba/ Latin dancing." But literally NO ONE took any offense from anything in the game and certainly NO ONE accused the game of racism.
After a long time of wanting a Dreamcast, I finally got one almost 2 months ago for $25, came with a controller and the hook ups. I have it now in my college dorm room right next to my N64, and both are some of the greatest consoles of all time.
One of my Favorite Systems of all time, spent hours upon hours playing on it. And I still have it and will never sell it. R.I.P My good friend......, (seriously watching this video made me choke up a little, damn this system was awesome)
the dreamcast will always be one of my fav' consoles of all time, and i have the 360 the ps3 and loads of other retro consoles but i will always go back to my good old dreamcast.
EA pulled support for DC because they didn't want competition from Visual Concepts. It had nothing to do with Saturn or previous systems. EA simply wanted to snuff out competitors and have the sports videogame market all to themselves. NFL license, anyone?
I remember my first Dreamcast fondly. Then I rmember trying to sell it once I got PS2 and Gamecube and they stopped making games for it. No game store would buy it from me...so I threw it away. :( Fortunately, I was redeemed recently when I found a Dreamcast with two controllers that looked like it might have been played ONCE EVER for $30. Now for the games...
The first and only time I ever saw, played, and found out or even heard about a Dreamcast was in a FAO Shwarz when I was like 7..I remember being amazed by the graphics and thinking it was the coolest system ever from the name to the way it looked lol and wanted one so bad even tho I had a N64..but never saw or heard about it again after that. Ive always wanted one ever since..still do ha.
I think one of the reasons why the Dreamcast kind of flopped was something to do with the fact that the American and Japanese offices of Sega couldn't see eye to eye. (It was like that in the development of the console iirc, where the American and Japanese branches couldn't agree on what graphics card to use inside of the system, SoA wanted a graphics card by a company by the name of 3D FX, whereas SoJ wanted one by NEC or some company. I can't remember the ins and outs of it.) Maybe the lack of promotion also didn't help it, I could be speaking from a European standpoint where I don't think they promoted it as much as they did in America and the advertising in Britain wasn't as memorable as the North American advertising campaigns.
well, the DVD player really helped. parents looking to get a game console for their kids see "hey, this one you can play DVD's on" and that made the PS2 sell really well, which in turn brought alot of third party games, which in turn added to the sales and so forth.
The story of Sega should be a warning to all hardware manufacturers everywhere. In 1991, Sega were a dominant player in the video game market. Then came the Mega CD. Followed by the 32X. Then the Saturn, which wasn't bad but handled miserably. For the Dreamcast, Sega learned from their mistakes and produced a truly innovative system. But alas, their past mistakes caught up with them as consumers no longer trusted the Sega brand. In 2001, Sega left the console hardware business.
Sega Dreamcast is one of the saddest stories in video game history. It is one of my favorite consoles and I still play it to this day. I know I am in the minority when I say this, but if I had to choose between a PS2 and a Dreamcast, I would choose Dreamcast any day of the week! It really is a shame that things happened the way that they did. Great console!
Very good summary of what went wrong, still Have it and play it ten years later. It is fantastic and the games were great, they screwed up and it's a real shame because it was AMAZING.
I love my dreamcast its fantastic I still have it, 2 green goblin sega arcade sticks, light gun, 6 controllers, and fishing rod controller, and about 100 games slowly decaying away its not really something I want to get rid of.
sega should have continued with the dreamcast. After giving the bs, they still should have continued support. They are just doing what people think they are. They say the dreamcast is gonna stay but they pulled the plug. They should have persisted. Maybe consumers at that time will regain sega's confidence? Sega makes great games, but.. its so sad seeing sega now. They are one of the top tier developer and publisher but its sad to see them out of the console market. I am ready to burn my ps4 and xbox if dreamcast 2 came out
Even I don't owned or play Dreamcast, this console was a bit better than the GameCube and although in real life and this console was in last place, in my mind and heart of imagination the Dreamcast will be the champion while the GameCube is in 2nd, Original Xbox in the 3rd and PS2 sunk last in the 4th.
I'm glad that they didn't bring up the DVD aspect. I get really tired of hearing that. Gamers, by and large, don't need a DVD player on their console. I barely even use the one on my 360. Did it work in 2000? Absolutely, but it was still a short term gimmick. PS2 succeeded because of its games, and its brand loyalty at the time. The thing that killed the Dreamcast is exactly what these people were talking about, a lot of corporate BS and mismanagement on the part of Sega itself. The US/Japan conflict that brought about the miserable 32X, the sudden launch of the Saturn that pissed off a lot of retailers, and the subsequent cut-and-run away from the Saturn. Dreamcast was a fantastic little system that came out at the worst possible time. But, it's like Tyrell said, "The fire that burns twice as brightly burns half as long, and you have so brightly shone..."
+Douglas Booth Dreamcast needed the DVD aspect, not for DVD movies but for the games. 1.2 GB discs just wasn't enough. Gamecube had the same issues with their 1.5 GB discs. The GTA games alone took up nearly 5 GB's PER GAME. Not having DVD rom was the dumbest thing Sega did.
in reality the fact that the PS2 could play DVDs was appealing to a lot of people because buying a stand alone DVD player at the time was rather expensive. A console that could play games and DVDS was a plus.
Only other thing to note is that in the uk we ditched EA FIFA for pro evo in our football game war even though it didn't have the brand rights. Gameplay can sometimes win and it took 7 years for EA to learn this.
Wow, it sounds like sega literally tried everything to keep up the market. Releasing fantastic quality games and even to the point where they were giving out the dreamcast is something I would never see any other gaming company will do. That is probably the reason why it so much respected because it was a great console that shortly lived. I still remember me rubbing my eyes with my jaw hanging when I first saw Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on NINTENDO Gamecube
What's really funny, as much strength that the Sony brand had, it could not withstand the E3 showing, or eventual launch of the PS3. The PS3 nearly destroyed them.
Yep, check on Dreamcast-Talk's website. a few dial up games are still online, and on broadband we have phantasy star online 1 and 2, quake, and another one or two.
Fun Fact: I bought and owned more than 6 Dreamcasts over the lifetime of it and even subscribed to their Sega-Net, i loved my Dreamcast and enjoyed sharing them as gifts or with friends. It has so many great games. I'd highly recommend it to any fan of Sega, Xbox, or 360. Go find yours at Amazon, Ebay, or Craigslist if you missed it. Question: What did you do when you learned of the PS2 that fateful Christmas the DC supposedly died out?
the dc had a very healthy library early on with the games you mentioned, alongside such notables as grandia ii, skies of arcadia, powerstone 1 & 2, phantasy star online, good ports of quake 3 and unreal tournament, crazy taxi, jet set radio, space channel 5, seaman, etc, etc. there were a lot of options, innovations, etc. the only thing was that financially, their proverbial goose was cooked with the saturn. they needed the killer apps of killer apps to recover, and it never showed up.
I bought my Dreamcast day one, and still have it, and use it every so often. In a way it's still my favorite council. I love the way it looks, and the name is so good, Sega renewed its patent on it in '08, just in case they want to get back in the system business. The import games are still some if the strangest, most interesting titles. I hate how dismissive they were of Shenmue here; It was revolutionary, and one of my all time favorites!
I remember my one and only opportunity to get a Dreamcast as a kid... I was at Sam's Club with my mom and little brother. It was close to Christmas time, so they had all the new consoles and games and mom asked the question.... "What would you like for Christmas this year? Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure? Or would you rather have Nintendo 64 with Mario 64?" My brother and I looked at each other and said (at the same time!!) "N64!!!" Still don't have a Dreamcast....
Godzilla 73 people bought PS2 because they wanted a DVD player. Dream cast couldn't appeal to a casual market like Nintendo did with the Wii a few years later.
I'd say the DC would have had a fighting chance. The technical difference between it and the other consoles was not as great as, say, the difference between the Wii and its competitors. Everything was in place: a head start, a wide variety of games, Sonic, affordable price, easy development... ...but the problem was that it was just too late from a brand and sales perspective. Abandoning the Saturn early was something Sega never quite recovered from, at least as I see it.
I bought my Dreamcast on launch day. I still have it hooked up to my TV, and I still play Jet Grind Radio at least twice a week. I'd still be playing the hell out of PSO had Sega not shut down the servers.
I agree with you. I love Sega and their hardware, but they made some major mistakes that ultimately killed them (Hardware-wise). I do feel that the 32X didn't have to be created, but the games like Knuckles Chaotix and Cyber Brawl (the JP version of Cosmic Carnage) could've been launch titles or games for the Saturn. Also, VR and Virtua Fighter should've been like their 32X counterparts instead of the crappy versions we got on the Saturn.
I still have my Dreamcast and still play it from time to time. They had a lot of great games. I really think if Sega had not come out with Sega CD, 32X. and spent more time on the Saturn. Than I really think Sega would still be here today. I really wish Sega would come back out with Dreamcast 2.
Till this day the Dreamcast is still an amazing console and holds up, and! There are still some private servers and Phantasy Star and a few others are still online =)
I agree, and Sega is the only company who, if they released a console, I'd work overtime just to get it at launch. They have been out of the market for a long time, and if they get back into it, they have the opportunity to do things right this time.
The biggest slap in the face was that the PlayStation 2's launch lineup was abysmal. The fact that it was a DVD player was what sealed the deal for most people though.
It's a shame. Though with the ps2 part of it that pushed sales (especially when it launched) was it was also a DVD player and the release of The Matrix was a big contribution when it filled in as a must have before Sony got any real system sellers on the console. Sega was also losing so much money on online support that ironically most people weren't interested in seeing : /
I didn't know anything about technical specs when I was twelve. I could just look at the PS2 games and tell that the system was far more powerful. Also, when referring to DVDs, I was referring to additional storage space, and I can assure you most people will care when their RPG ports begin to run 5 CDs versus one DVD on PS2. Even so, just being able to watch movies is still a technical feature the DC did not have.
@Metaknight4569 - Yeah. But it's just not the same. All my friends that I used to play online with have all moved on. They have all sold their Dreamcasts or just dont play them anymore. Besides, I no longer have a dial up account. If I had a broadband adapter, I'd probably jump online every now and then.
7:28-7:38 is a perfect summary of what happened. They finally make an awesome console, but because of their past, nobody trust them. If only they would have slowed down and focused just on the Saturn and not the CD or 32x, then they would have fared better.
Here is what I want to know, and please understand this is coming from a guy that grew up on Nintendo and made the switch to PlayStation in 96: Could the Dreamcast have run games like Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, RE4, HL2, Halo, Vice City, COD 2... etc? Because it seems to me that if the answer is no, it would have eventually been crushed anyway.
And they are still making games for Dreamcast. New games come out on this year : Sturmwind,Pier Solar,Ghost Blade,DUX : Dark Matters. And another 2 games(TAHI and Scourge) for 2014.
Because the Saturn seemed pretty good at launch but then the PS1 showed what a 32-bit system could really do. I think people were expecting the same thing from the next gen, so they waited for the PS2. Loss of confidence in Sega, at both the consumer and developer level, is the main reason the system failed (due to failure or poor performance of 32X, Saturn).
A lack of brand loyalty killed the Dreamcast? I can't say I've heard that one before. The way you spin it, it makes sense when you watch the video, but in the end, the Dreamcast was like the Saturn. It was released at a bad time caught somewhere in between two different eras of video gaming. The technical specs of the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube blew the Dreamcast out of the water. It wouldn't have been able to keep up with the games from the 128-bit era.
I was 12 years old back then and I knew that, and btw, the DVD component is just another example of how the technical specs for the PS2 blew away the DC. c'mon now.
but what could they do, with the xbox 360, ps3 and the wii U already popular, and the 3rd xbox pretty much announced already, there is too much competition to introduce a new console.
No, I blame you for not supporting it. I had a Genesis 32X, then a Sega CD, and wanted a Saturn, but by the time I saved $150 for a new game console, the Saturn was no longer around. I asked for a Saturn for my birthday, but it was too expensive for my parents who told me I would get one for Christmas. I didn't but I enjoyed my Genesis an got my CD and 32X next Christmas. I saved up cash to buy a Dreamcast, but then my mom got me one for my HS graduation. I don't blame Sega. I blame gamers
This is spot on. I bought a Saturn and after they hurriedly and so blatantly killed if off, I vowed never to buy a Sega Console again (and I had a Master System and Mega Drive as well, still do). I went to PlayStation and PS2 afterwards and never looked back. Don't blame Sony for the death of the dreamcast people, blame Sega for burning people like me with their previous consoles. Sega Cd, 32X and Saturn = Three strikes and you're out.
+Sending Postcards From A Plane Crash Glitchy, buggy graphics and collision detection. God awful music and voice acting. A setting that shares absolutely nothing in common with the original games. Incredibly bad level design, again sharing nothing in common with the brilliance of the original games. The on-rails loops, twists, and turns. Leaving almost no control to the player, more like mini cut scenes than actual controls. All of the additional characters are ugly, annoying, and no fun to play as, especially when you are forced to play some of the especially awkward ones. My grudge against every single 3D Sonic game that has come out is that it has nothing in common with the originals except the hedgehog himself. The original games had a unique, art deco style that set them apart, made them surreal. They struck a perfect balance between speed and control that isn't replicated in any of the newer games. The new games just look like public domain assets randomly placed in a standard, boring setting that isn't unique or interesting to look at in any way. Literally everything that was good about the originals (The music, the controls, the setting, and the speed) is lacking in the newer games. Sonic Adventure 1 was graphically appealing when it was released, and that is the only nice thing i have to say about any of that shit. If you want to play a truly great Sonic game, play Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
leadbones Yeah, I've played through the 2D games as well. I still think Adventure 1 is a great game. I think the music is some of the best in the series. The voice acting was bad, but that can be blamed for the Japanese to English translation (look at Resident Evil 1). There were glitches, I'll admit. There were less in the sequel. The graphics are bad? Well it was released in 1998! Compare it to the games that were released around that time, it looks way better. They don't force you to play as the other characters. If you want you can just play as Sonic, but then you won't get the super ending. The only character I didn't enjoy playing as was Big. Anyway, let's look at the classics. In order to go super, you would have to go through the god awful special stages. Let me tell you this, I'd rather play through 7 stages of Big the Cat (there's like 3 or 4 in SA) than go through those torture fests. Also on rail sequences? So there's no moments in the classics where the game's just letting you go fast?
In a way, it was. However, after they tried to fix what they did with the 32X, CD AND the Saturn...Sony wrecked them. The dreamcast was one of the greatest systems of all time, and it's easily a lot better than the Genesis. It's quite a shame it sold so badly...
The Dreamcast failure is a perfect example of how stuck on there ways people realy are.Funny how now over 10 years later, the Dreamcast is a hot commodity on ebay.People want a Dreamcast now in 2012 and developers still want to create for it.
SegaNet was not first, don't forget Xband, that is also online. Also, Atari experimented with WIRELESS distro of games in the late 70's, but it never worked not because of technical reasons but because the games were to be distributed via RADIO stations and they were all indie owned back then, not syndicated.
The fall of the Dreamcast (THE BEST console EVER) totally ruined my mood for gaming for like 10 years. I even had a X-box afterwards but it was over... it wasn't better as the dreamcast and didn't even had the same passion and feeling like playing games on a DC. I could play Quake 3 Arena online with people from all over the world while PS2 gamers still had to wait for online gaming and people were waiting for a Xbox where you needed a creditcard to play games online. Fuck Sony, fuck MS!
The time of the dreamcast the system itself was mostly irrelevant. And the system did good, but in order for sega stay in the hardware side of things, they needed it to do amazing.
Things were awfully different in Japan, where the only true failure sega had was the 32X. Saturn had a LOT of potential, and was overshadowed by PS1's popularity. For years the only SEGA console I had was the Genesis. I got a DC last week, I'm throughoutly impressed with it, and I now strive to get all of the rest of the family. You just got to look a bit further than most "big" releases. Sonic's house company had so many great obscure titles it's not even funny. SSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEGGGAAAAAAAA!
That's a common misnomer about ps2 hardware from non tech people. The ps2's GPU worked completely differently from DC or PC design. PS2's 4MB eDRAM is over 20 times faster than the DC @ 48gb/sec. Basically ps2 programmers were supposed to use "Texture Swizzling" techniques to layer/reupload more than 4MB of textures per frame from main ram and VUs. The ps2 fast bus speeds could display between 20-30mb of textures per frame @60FPS, 2x that @30FPS. PS2 did have hardware edge AA, butwas hard to use
whats funny is how they are saying what ruined sega is that it was coming out with a console as soon as every 2yrs, when today new phones come out every day for hundreds of dollars and we all run out and buy then with no questions. The dreamcast was awesome for the time it was here.
Yeah, that was sort of my point. had it lived long enough that developers would have it figured to the 9s, and would be pushing it to its limit would it have stood up? I really like to think it would, but I know not.
I remember asking for a playstation 2 when I was about 10 years old. I had never played console games so everything I knew was just from my imagination really. My dad asked what I thought of the dreamcast and for some reason I immediately got the mental image of some sort of playful castle in my head. Goddamn I loved that system. crazy taxi, chu chu rocket, virtua tennis, nhl 2k, sonic, mvc2, soul caliber. Such good memories.
To be honest I thought it had more intriguing games than PS2.
I got one! I got a Dreamcast! Finally after all these years. It's the Black Sports edition. It's pretty damn sweet if I do say so myself.
His description of Shenmue at 4:55 makes me cringe.
+Mr .357 perfect example of someone who played shenmue for 4 minutes and shut it off
+Sex-E Coco
I wouldn't play it for that long.

Pixar The Great Shenmue is still to this day. One of the greatest games I've ever played.
Yeah
Example of a guy who played a game for 5 minutes
I like this kind of shows... As a 90's kid and a gamer.

Bought my Dreamcast at launch and it's still connected to my tv!
playvalue was ahead of its time.
It was. I discovered it back in the spring of '09, and it had been out for 1-2 years by then. I've got fond memories of that show.
I can imagine that after SEGA ran out of business and started to work for Nintendo, they said, "I'll take you to hell with me."
The Dreamcast is my all time favorite console. I had a blast with that console, nothing but great games.
Shenmue was way more than a life simulator. It had a great battle system And it introduced the qte.
Coheedrocks27 Agree, not to mention, Shenmue has a great storyline.
Coheedrocks27 i wouldnt mention qte as a good thing. qte sucks
Just like dreamcast, I wish this channel still made videos

Why did that one guy rip off that other guy from the GameSpot Sega Saturn video.
Sadly, the PS2 was one of the cheapest DVD players when it was released, and as well as DVDs holding more data
I wish playvalue or at least some of the people here will have a podcast. I would support it
I remember my first Dreamcast fondly. Then I rmember trying to sell it once I got PS2 and Gamecube and they stopped making games for it. No game store would buy it from me...so I threw it away.
:(
Fortunately, I was redeemed recently when I found a Dreamcast with two controllers that looked like it might have been played ONCE EVER for $30.
I loved my saturn, and my dreamcast ..and my fishing controller
I think one of the reasons why the Dreamcast kind of flopped was something to do with the fact that the American and Japanese offices of Sega couldn't see eye to eye.
(It was like that in the development of the console iirc, where the American and Japanese branches couldn't agree on what graphics card to use inside of the system, SoA wanted a graphics card by a company by the name of 3D FX, whereas SoJ wanted one by NEC or some company. I can't remember the ins and outs of it.)
Maybe the lack of promotion also didn't help it, I could be speaking from a European standpoint where I don't think they promoted it as much as they did in America and the advertising in Britain wasn't as memorable as the North American advertising campaigns.
Agreed. Too bad this channel died a decade ago.
well, the DVD player really helped. parents looking to get a game console for their kids see "hey, this one you can play DVD's on" and that made the PS2 sell really well, which in turn brought alot of third party games, which in turn added to the sales and so forth.
That's right. It was playable with a keyboard but it wasn't easy to make a good layout for that sort of game on the Dreamcast controller.
+Douglas Booth
Dreamcast needed the DVD aspect, not for DVD movies but for the games.
1.2 GB discs just wasn't enough. Gamecube had the same issues with their 1.5 GB discs. The GTA games alone took up nearly 5 GB's PER GAME.
Not having DVD rom was the dumbest thing Sega did.
+Douglas Booth The DVD aspect didn't affect the North American market, but it CRUSHED the Japanese market.
in reality the fact that the PS2 could play DVDs was appealing to a lot of people because buying a stand alone DVD player at the time was rather expensive. A console that could play games and DVDS was a plus.
Only other thing to note is that in the uk we ditched EA FIFA for pro evo in our football game war even though it didn't have the brand rights. Gameplay can sometimes win and it took 7 years for EA to learn this.
I still play my Dreamcast, infact I now import the awesome shooters that are still being made for it.
The PS3 nearly destroyed them.
yes that was the number one huge problem, some hackers were somehow making copies of sega dreamcast games with the good ol' cd burner
Yep, check on Dreamcast-Talk's website. a few dial up games are still online, and on broadband we have phantasy star online 1 and 2, quake, and another one or two.
Fun Fact:
I bought and owned more than 6 Dreamcasts over the lifetime of it and even subscribed to their Sega-Net, i loved my Dreamcast and enjoyed sharing them as gifts or with friends. It has so many great games. I'd highly recommend it to any fan of Sega, Xbox, or 360. Go find yours at Amazon, Ebay, or Craigslist if you missed it.
Question:
What did you do when you learned of the PS2 that fateful Christmas the DC supposedly died out?
I also like the "Ike Turnner" thing. Because that's the best way to explain it. That's how I felt with sega.
the dc had a very healthy library early on with the games you mentioned, alongside such notables as grandia ii, skies of arcadia, powerstone 1 & 2, phantasy star online, good ports of quake 3 and unreal tournament, crazy taxi, jet set radio, space channel 5, seaman, etc, etc. there were a lot of options, innovations, etc. the only thing was that financially, their proverbial goose was cooked with the saturn. they needed the killer apps of killer apps to recover, and it never showed up.
1:43 Not any more.
@0325bodo they reuploaded all their videos in hd, I don't know if their back quite yet.
play my dreamcast much more still than my ps2
Godzilla 73 people bought PS2 because they wanted a DVD player. Dream cast couldn't appeal to a casual market like Nintendo did with the Wii a few years later.
Was the sequel Jet Set, because I always see Jet Set Radio
Sega Dreamcast was a great system but not for sports more for fighting games that is
I like how they did the VH1 "I love the 80s" presentation with this video.
I still have my Dreamcast and still play it from time to time. They had a lot of great games. I really think if Sega had not come out with Sega CD, 32X. and spent more time on the Saturn. Than I really think Sega would still be here today. I really wish Sega would come back out with Dreamcast 2.
That really is amazing the 360 didn’t have a web browser before the old Dreamcast
Till this day the Dreamcast is still an amazing console and holds up, and! There are still some private servers and Phantasy Star and a few others are still online =)
Why are they just re-uploading the videos that they just took down?
I agree, and Sega is the only company who, if they released a console, I'd work overtime just to get it at launch. They have been out of the market for a long time, and if they get back into it, they have the opportunity to do things right this time.
@0325bodo I think they removed them so they could upload them in better quality.
Power stone 1 was a 2 player launch game, what was shown there is power stone 2 and it was release in 2000 along with a 4 player mode.
I'm not gonna lie, I agree with you. It was better than the N64's stick, but a step back from the PS1's Dualshock sticks.
And they are still making games for Dreamcast. New games come out on this year : Sturmwind,Pier Solar,Ghost Blade,DUX : Dark Matters. And another 2 games(TAHI and Scourge) for 2014.
And people still say it'd be a great idea if Nintendo abandon Wii U and release a more powerful console in its place
I thought the same. This is why I don't like the idea of NX and it seems like it will be coming this year!
What a fantastic segment.
9:06 say hello to NBA Elite for me.
Who else thinks Sega could make a comeback in hardware? If great Sonic titles were exclusive on it, I'd buy it.
Shenmue was a multi GD-ROM game wasn't it? Couldn't they have split GTA VC up on 3 or 4 GD-ROMS?
Sonic Adventure on dreamcast, oh wait, that's the GameCube version.:3
kakashi101able Did you know that the Sonic Adventure games are shit, and annihilated the franchise? Killed it dead.
Best selling game on a failed system. Wow. As if sales make it fun to play. Point is, it's a crappy game, and the Dreamcast had way too many of those.
+leadbones Well I'm not sure what your grudge against the SA games are, so why don't you explain.
+Sending Postcards From A Plane Crash
Glitchy, buggy graphics and collision detection.
Because that's how we saw it back then after having a 64-bit N64.
SegaNet was not first, don't forget Xband, that is also online. Also, Atari experimented with WIRELESS distro of games in the late 70's, but it never worked not because of technical reasons but because the games were to be distributed via RADIO stations and they were all indie owned back then, not syndicated.
My favorite system I've ever owned =.. (
It may not have been a direct factor in the console's demise, but it put a strain on devs since it didn't have that many input methods.
Fuck Sony, fuck MS!
to this day, i still play my dreamcast. sonic suffle and house of the dead 2.
Dreamcast rocked. Been fending off the urge to go adventuring through a garage full of crap just to play on it in recent weeks.
So for example Quake III Arena?
