I take that as a great compliment Steve, and I enjoy your videos very much as well and I intend to watch them all when I can make the time. Best wishes for your father's recovery!
***** Oh yeah even as a Bose fanatic, they're def overpriced, no question asked. But they are not crappy and not even in the slightest. Even with dead batteries inside, the noise isolation the leather ear muffs provide are great. Sennheiser's are good to, but after my 3rd pair broke I switched over to Bose and never went back :/ Also I don't even remember typing that comment.
Are you trying to play it with a iPhone or MP3 player? If so, try hooking it up to something with a built in amplifier, like a stereo. It gets louder because you're linking the voice coil with the stronger magnetic lines. Try to stabilize the plate at that spot and you'll have better sound. I'm glad you got it working!
I've seen it done, but haven't tried it myself yet. However, I do have plenty of speakers, so I'll have to make a note to try it once I make a tone generator.
YOU'RE INVINCIBLE!!! You touched hot glue! When I got some on my by accident I had to keep a piece of paper towel soaked with water on my finger until it stopped stinging ;D
I should be doing my homework.... eventually I've been for about an hour watching your videos. Besides, right now for physics we are learning about electromagnets and such :D mechanical energy transformed into sound energy. yay
Okydoaky. This reminds me Of the time as a kid I started a repair shop for old tube TV's an radios. Some of them held a few amps of charge. Yep I got zapped. A few months later my mother made me empty her living room. Those big old wood TV radio cabinets took up a lot of space. Thank You

wttfffffff!!!!!!!!!! i was given like 6 weeks and all i could find were speaker kits over $ $100 then i found this and tried to make it and it didnt work so i am screwed because my presentation is due tommorow
Great karate moves hahahaha! Anyways, let me get to the point: If you noticed when you opened the speaker, the magnet had a groove around it and a metal casing surrounding it. The metal surrounding it is connected to the oposite pole of the magnet. This way the space in between (where the coil gets inserted) has a very high, concentrated magnetic flux. Very little of the magnetic field is required to travel outside the magnet and into the air this way (the magnetic field does not like to travel through air; the air's magnetic permitivity is very low). It goes without saying that leaving such a small gap for the magnetic flux, allows for optimal performance. It is one of the greatest considerations you have to take into account in designing a speaker or a motor. The air gap has to be small. The air gap you are using here is huge. The magnetic lines travel outside the north pole all around the magnet and into the other pole.
The way the coil is wound up really matters. You get a much better and louder sound if the coil is uniform and clean. If you just wind it up quick and dirty your speaker will not be as loud and will not be nearly as sensitive to the changing voltage running through the coil. The better the sensitivity, the clearer your sound will be. Powerful magnets are one thing, a powerful uniformly wound coil makes things better and reduces the need for more powerful magnets.
People the guy is just saying for less than a buck because you can get all of those things free if you want, + dont go scientific or start calculating gas milage because we all know that if you are on the internet you are not poor so dont be "tacaños" and please dont make comments that insult or contradict this person because all of us are enjoying what he uploaded
Some poor people have free access to a library with computers. I do agree don't freak out an get all technical. Life can be way serious some times. Thank You
If you make this, check the impedance (ohms) with a multimeter (should be the Ω symbol). To do it, set your multimeter at the Ω setting and touch the leads to the wires. Usually 4 or 8 ohms is a good impedance. Heres how to match the speaker with your amp: If your amplifier can't handle under 4 ohms (check the back) and your speaker is under 4 ohms, than wind more wire around the paper tube. If you don't check, you could damage you're amplifier.
So to make this connect to my phone would I just take a 3.5 mm audio cable, strip the end and solder it onto the loose ends of the wires hanging out of the speaker?
If you're looking for some wire I suggest ripping apart a old charger (or transformer) of some sort because they contain reels of insulated copper wire.
very impressive ! there was a game when i was a we little one, it was a field and track game. my older brother took it apart to see where the sounds was coming from, it came from a speaker . . yes . . . but, it was a '' flat '' speaker, as like thinner than a dime , but almost the size of a quarter. all that high pitched sound from that little thing. lol . most impressive video !! 5000 thumbs up !!
George Washingpun this was described in a previous video. You can get them free all day long on Craigslist, if you're willing to move and store it He's used his for several things.
George Washingpun Well he got the TV for free off of craigslist or something so anybody could really get one, usually you have to pay to recycle those because nobody wants them anymore, but if you find one someone doesn't want you can probably get it for free, or very cheap.

Eli Arnold he bassicaly just did that all you would have to do is put something on top of the speaker to protect it put a bottle on it fill it with water and you have a dancing water speaker
I tried this experiment. It seems that I blew something up because my main speaker no longer sends sound to my smaller speaker. It work fine for a few minutes and then I turned the voume up and it stopped working. I tried to see if my normal speakers worked and they don't work either. Glad it was an old set of speakers. Is there a safer way to do this project without blowing up a set of speakers. Is it even possible that i blew up my main speaker doing this?
If your stereo no longer makes sound no matter what speaker is connected to it, you have blown the stereo amp. It was irresponsible for Grant to suggest doing this without adding a resistor in series to protect the amplifier. This speaker will look like a very low resistance to the amp. Most amplifiers will blow out if you put less than 4 ohms on them and turn them up.
Two comments, not dissing this awesome build to learn how to make speakers - 1. make sure you use foam safe paint. 2. winding the wire better (more winds) will make the electromagnet stronger helping it be louder.
Thank you so much for making this video! This is the best explanation/example of how to make a speaker that I have found! Fitri Therock nahh im pretty sure that you're phone is gonna be ok after

yeah I would suggest using a sacrificial amplifier since the resistance isn't matched..u will likely ruin your amp
Steve Greenfield Thanks. Do speakers normally have a resistor as part of their makeup?
Not really. There is an impedance inherent in the coil pushing against air.
Steve Greenfield
About how much resistance should we apply to the paper speaker?
