AT 1:06:31, I believe that 2nd peak from the right is King Kong peak (from the movie shot on Kauai) . You can see King Kong's profile. You have a close-up of it again at 1:06:47. We spent Christmases on Kauai for many, many years. We stayed with friends who lived on the North Shore on Wainiha Powerhouse Road. The road is on the way to Ke'e Beach where you started on the Kalalau Trail. The green woven cordage you found on top the Sleeping Giant is actually a sacred maile lei. The old Hawaiian Kahuna's (priests) used to bind a married couple's hands together with a maile lei as a symbol of their union. It remains as a symbol of love and respect to this day, and is very hard to obtain because of the remoteness of where the plants are found. One year we were hiking on one of the muddy trails up to a small waterfall and pool, and we ran into actor Drew Barrymore and a friend coming back down. The road to the trail was really a muddy 4WD road, but Drew tried to drive it in one of the rental convertible passenger cars available on the island. Don't know if she made it. We passed her slipping and sliding around on our way out. Another of our friends lived on a completely private beach (Pila'a), also on the north shore. They were totally off the grid, and they had to have a 4WD truck to get there. The coral reef directly in front of their house was one of the finest, most pristine in the world and a fabulous diving and snorkeling spot. No one else had access to it. A greedy developer moved on top of a cliff overlooking one end of the beach and decided to bulldoze the top off the cliff for a housing development. Right after he bulldozed, one of those monstrous Kauai rainstorms came along and washed all the exposed mud down the cliff and onto the coral reef. Caused a huge environmental disaster and unending lawsuits because it killed off most of the live coral and associated sealife. There is a seamy underside to Kauai as well, which you didn't mention. That being said, it is relaxing by-and-large, and beautiful. Unbeatable seafood. Finally, for those still reading this comment, the secret to negotiating those muddy trails are rubber boots called jika-tabi walkers. They are Japanese in origin and have a split between the big toe and the second toe, an elastic top, and thick wool felt soles, perfect for walking in mud and gripping slippery boulders. You can buy them at any fishing/camping supply place on Kauai. We each have a pair, and they are probably 25 years old.

Right you are about the mountain! That's cool, thank you for sharing :) That's also good to know about the maile leis. It definitely felt significant finding one at the top of Sleeping Giant. Also, wow, that's cool you met Drew Barrymore! The friend with the coral reefs near their home sounds interesting. That's such a shame about the developer... I've heard similar things often happen on the west coast - people will build expensive houses up on cliffs that get washed away easily. Also, the jika-tabi look awesome, that would be really interesting to hike in. I'm surprised I never noticed them at the stores. Thank you so much for your comment - that was really interesting!

Just fyi there are no private beaches on Kauai, unfortunately some people try to make their beach access inaccessible (I’m not saying ur friends did so) but if someone can get to it, technically can use it. I live on Kauai. Thanks!

The videography, photography, narration, banter on each trip & experience, you’re humor, philosophy, perfecto editing & the music. Oh the music is spectacular. You definitely have you’re own unique original sound & each instrumental piece is a custom sound for each video you create. Have you thought about putting together a sound track combining you’re music of each video? You should. I love you guys. You’re so down to earth & a pure joy to follow you’re recorded trips & hikes. What a wonderful life you guys are living. It’s obvious that you work very hard in between you’re adventures. Blessings to each of you 💖

Shared adventure. I felt like I was on the hikes with you guys. It's almost 20 years since I visited Kauai, and some of the places you went to. I liked that you guys were knowledgeable about plants, and fruits, and flowers, and weather, and culture, and also enjoyed eating broad ranging meals and drinks. Hiking those trails and mountains is hard, but you guys made it seem pleasant and enjoyable.
Unfortunately it didn't seem like you interacted with any locals. I heard you say things like the people who live there are laid-back. You guys got to do activities and visit and explore more of the island than most of the locals probably do because they are busy working and struggling to survive. Visiting versus working/living on Kauai are at opposite ends. It's not really fun to be working in a place where others come to relax, party, eat like crazy, spend money like crazy, and do all kinds of fun and exciting things.
I've lived and worked in Hilo, Hawaii, and other nice destinations in the US and Europe. It's always been an inner struggle watching visitors have a great time in a vacation spot while I'm too busy working and not enjoying it like they are.
Great video. I really enjoyed it.

Aloha! My husband was watching your video and the luau at Gaylord’s I brought back so much memories. When we met each other 17 years ago, he was a fire knife dancer and Tahitian drummer at the luau show there. We’d been dating for a short period of time when I went to see his last show at Gaylord’s because he was moving to the Big Island of Hawaii where I lived
As a teenager, he performed at Smith’s Tropical Paradise (where you would have jumped on the boat to go up to the Fern Grotto). His sister had a luau show of her own there
You did a great job showcasing the beautiful Garden Island, Kauai

My wife and I hiked the Kalalau Trail some 25 years ago in beautiful sunny weather. There is a heiau (ancient Hawaiian temple/platform) made of lava rocks near the trailhead. The ancient Hawaiians occasionally performed ritual human sacrifices there, so behave and don't trash-out the trail. The trail is tricky and narrow in places with sheer drops from the cliffs to the ocean. I'm not sure I'd have a go at it in the weather you faced. If you get injured out there in those conditions, it's unlikely a helicopter could fly in to get you out. Still, I have to praise your grit and enthusiasm. I think we hiked in for 5 miles or so to a lovely, curving beach (with dangerous rip currents by the way) and then followed a stream inland for ~1 mile to an absolutely stunning high waterfall and a pool of crystal clear water surrounded by ferns. The cool water really revived us after the hike. Like many places in the world, there is an undercurrent of resentment towards "haoles" (a somewhat pejorative Hawaiian term for white folks.) and not without some justification. Just dig a bit into Hawaiian history and you'll know why. One of the best ways to diffuse potential conflicts is to shift your thinking to "island time," a loose term signifying no stress, a slower pace and a generally mellow attitude. For example, honking your car horn impatiently is considered extremely rude behavior. Learning to pronounce Hawaiian words properly (phonetically similar to Spanish) with its tricky glottal stops, is a simple way to show your respect for local culture, make new friends and spread the spirit of aloha.

Really enjoying your Kauai experience. A high school friend and I drove across country after graduation in 1971 and he had an aunt and uncle who lived on Oahu who had a cabin up the Kauai Grand Canyon. We met a girl at the famous double waterfall and needed a drive to the Taylor Camp that was as far around the eastern side as you could drive. Many lived there in raised up individual plastic wrapped rooms.. they were without clothes on the beach. The island didn't like the Taylor camp (Richard burton's brother ?) .. they left and now it is a resort? Learning more from you all than Phil and I ever did. We almost walked off the cliff at the high land vista north end of the canyon.. not seeing well in the fog.

I'm an old timer. My 1st time to Kauai there was no terminal and you deplaned on the tarmac. You walked over to some benches and the baggage handlers just drove your luggage to you and you just grabbed it off the trailer. The Kalalua trail was still relatively unknown and even more narrow and dangerous but awesome! Polihale is one of my favorite places there and was a locals only beach back then. In summer the sand there and at neighboring Barking Sands beach gets extremely hot and will burn your feet. Did you hear the barking as you walked through the sand? Sure it's getting crowded but what a beautiful place. As a fellow tree and plant lover it never gets old. Thanks for bringing back such great memories! My favorite Hawaiian island! You can still find some solitude over on Molokai if you know where to look. Mahalo!

Stationed at Kekaha at the Naval Missile base 1961-1964. Barking Sands was the neatest beach around I thought, you could hear the dogs barking as the waves slapped down upon the beach. The Island had less tourists back then, but a beautiful Island to be on, had lot's of fun on Kauai.

Great video! Lived on Kauai for 5 years growing up and I’d say the only thing you missed was doing sleeping giant for a sunrise and Puka dogs on the Westside. Loved watching this and reminiscing of the good ol days. Thanks for the memories!

All the talking about Guavas reminds me of my hometown in Mexico. My aunt had many kinds of trees, pomegranate, mango, guava, edible sea pods and God knows what else. I'm craving guavas now 😋

At 28:00 in elementary school we would call that plant with fuzzy purple flowers "sleeping grass"; many kids loved to play with those plants growing up lol.
