Hats off to you for actually getting biomechanical experts in to offer sound evidence based opinions for this video Easton. Way too many people out there forcing their opinions on this topic without much at all to back it up!
Personally have ran 10x1K on the track in dragonfly’s at 2:50-2:45 pace. Most other spikes would’ve caused Achilles or calf problems. None the following day and legs felt normal. 2 weeks later did 12x1k at Cole Park/cement trail. Legs didnt feel the fatigue until 10K in and I literally could not believe it. Keep in mind this was at 7,500 ft of altitude as well. Paces were 3:10 down to 2:53
Super cool to hear the perspective from an actual expert. Maybe this will quiet some of the people ranting about the unfairness of the shoes. One thing though, the professor misspoke on the shoe Seidel wore for the Olympics. She wore the Puma Deviate Elite, not the ASICS Metaspeed
Great vid man!! Fun fact.. The Nike Vaporfly Next% have a lifespan of around 225-275 give or take.. That's almost $1 per every mile you run in them, racing or not.. Can't wait for the hype to come down so these become more affordable to use as a trainer..
I believe it mostly has to do with how tough the athlete is on the shoes. I've heard a few people that have used them say that they get about 100-150 miles out of them. Most people use then for a couple of workouts before a marathon and then maybe use them for a tune up race before the marathon and that's about it.
I think the athletes with better biomechanics/forefoot and mid foot strikers are likely to benefit more than someone the over strides/heel strikes. I've read information from a few experts that basically said the same thing as Doc, about 1 second per lap in a 5k.
My friend ran 3200 in track all season and always ran around 10:20. Final race of season, I let him borrow my dragonflies and he ran 10:19. Maybe they gave him that extra second or maybe he just peaked for that day. That being said, at the high school level I don’t feel they make that big of a difference
Or maybe he was only capable of say 10:25 that day and clocked 10:19. My son is a walk on at Colorado. The workload is a huge step up in both quality and quality. He runs tempos in alphas and quick workouts in dragonfly's. They help in avoiding injury and recovering quicker. Running fast is inclusive. Every advantage you can get adds up. Diet sleep box jumps ........ Shoe technology.
I've run in the Nike, Saucony and Adidas shoes, I haven't noticed much difference between the brands to be honest . I'd be interested to try the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite. I've a lot of people have the Deviate Nitro

Thanks man! Glad to have someone who actually knows
I don't feel faster in vapor flies but definitely noticed they helped save my legs to perform better overall on a long run
I definitely feel faster with more spring
Hmm, well that helps too I guess!

Agree with doctor, Psychology and fitness level are the biggest factors the shoes not sure about it.
Yeah so hard to know the effect at this point
Molly Seidel wore Puma at the Olympics
Ooh good call

Some have said they actually can only do 100 miles, that’s when they lose their ‘pop’, I’ve found the same

I’m at 230 on my vaporflys and they still feel good

Haha I’d never let anyone race in my dragonflies for 2 miles😂
