From a Civil Engineering stance, the entire idea is impractical. Every layer you go down, you need to practically double the support structures. Since the bores are mostly moving dirt, stability of the soil is also an issue. Even if it was solid rock, you're one minor quake from demolishing the entire sub-structure, and the second anything on the lower levels gets compromised you can look forward to the entire thing getting shut down to inspect and repair the damage. Then there's the COST. Holy hell, you know how much it even takes to dig a tunnel half a mile? Elon's personal tunnel is only about half a kilometer, and that thing is costing hundreds of millions, unless he's ignoring all safety concerns.
An I bet u a doughnut hole he m an his teams smart enough to use plenty rebar when forming prefabricated concrete segments = stonger than before by an order of magnitude
Make sure you have backup generators. Although, I'm sure you've thought of this already. It would be quite dangerous to be trapped in an underground tunnel without light. Especially for women. Thank you for sharing. You are a true visionary.
Am i the only one that realizes the archaeological impacts of this? Not in a negative way, but in a positive way! Imagine the finds that might be made as these tunnels are being dug all around the world. Imagine when they start drilling these tunnels under Pompeii in Italy, Memphis in Egypt or Jerusalem.. I wouldnt be surprised if archaeology gets a second renissance of unexpected discoveries with this. Most major cities are built on sites that have been populated for many thousands of years, which in turn are built on top of ancient cities now buried. We could find entire whole buried cities.
I always wondered about this but first time I've really seen it brought up. Just like when the were digging for the Large Hadron Collider. IIRC it was delayed for like 6 months due to the discovery of Gallo-Roman ruins.
Quality of sound is so weird, that I feel it almost boring. Please make future sessions more pleasant to hear. Thank you. It was pleasure to hear Musk’s vision. I share his vision and believe that it will happen soon.
"will happen soon"... that aged, but it didn't age well. Musk gave us 22mph teslas with drivers in tiny, single lane tunnels, and took over a year to go a short distance.
Whats happens in case of a flood? are there any emergency evacuation procedures if the tunnels get flooded? or are there water ducts that make sure the tunnels never get filled with water?
I was thinking maybe they have a some much smaller holes used as drains that would redirect the water down to somewhere else. No idea if that is horrible idea or not, just throwing it out there.
When Elon is explaining the issues in with construction at 28:00 some of the specific things he's saying get cut off by audio issues ("issues"?). Anyone have any idea what the few problems we couldn't hear are?
If you are using the dirt from the tunnel to build the segments for the tunnel, how do you handle the different composition of the dirt? The same goes for the blocks. Going thru different kinds of dirt (sorry, I am not a geologist) will result in different qualities and different color (only importantf for the bricks).
For color, they can merely paint over it I'm sure. As for quality of the composition, I'm guessing they factor in whether the weakest possible composition is still strong enough for the required rating, and if so having a stronger composition is merely a plus and they just use make bricks with whatever they get. The alternative I suppose is they formulate the composition themselves by adding in separated "ingredients" until they get a desired mixture, then form the bricks.
I do not think he do what technically not possible. He is very technical, he have a lot of stuff he said not possible. He just crazy enough to make something happen. He is an engineer..
I was there tonight and it occurred to me afterwards that you need to engineer for the social aspect of this form of transportation as well. A closed space with a captive audience and no police would be great for opportunistic criminals. Think about all the ways it could be used- both positive and negative.
Petrichor Guards would be expensive, it’s a valid concern but it’s not as if people can’t do bad things to a bus or subway etc. If enough people would carry a gun then there wouldn’t be many criminals trying to “hijack” a pod
Simply a security camera and an AI responding to alarming sounds in the pod would be enough to reroute the pod to the nearest police station automatically. Pull a prank on the system once, get banned for a month from the system. Police / Emergency response teams and hospitals would have their own entries. Larger hospitals probably several directly on the right wing. It would be like delivering criminals right at the police station that would stop it immediately. But humans are creative they will find other ways to do criminal acts. Just package the kidnapped person unconscious prior to boarding and let it deliver a package anywhere to "the customer who bought the package".
As part of the public living in LA, please go as fast as you possibly can. Ultimately I'd hope you bore out a LA->Chicago hyperloop. It sounds like LA-SF and NY-DC are first, but please keep Chicago on your radar once those machines get cooking. You'd bring down the airline industry in a year after it goes live.

Kind of, but i heard that generally it's very expensive to maintain tunnels in long run. When you want to build so many obviously that should be addressed.
akhil katpally It is actually cheaper to maintain public transport than roadways, as there is much more wear and tear on those, most public transport is build around efficiency and once its works it is supposed to stay that way. also you don't have to worry about idiots on the roads as in a few years most of it will be automated.
akhil katpally And regarding the tunnels that is only partially correct, for most subway tunnels that is obviously right because they are not that far underground and construction and disturbances on the surface still effect them. The boring tunnels are supposed to way deeper than the normal subway. There most of the problems from up top is negated.
30 years from now the maintenance will be fully automated by smart robots. Anyway you can do standard maintenance in night hours and with good network you can divert traffic with not much delay. Having many separate lanes running parallel means you can service one of them at any time.
Probably you wouldn't stack lanes exactly below eachother, you'd probably add other lanes in other directions and make it a real network. For example if in the picture of the network at 36:25 the LA stadium to South LA part would get "full" you'd probably better connect Leimert Park to Culver City directly, and South LA to Hawhthorne to lawndale which would releive traffic from the overcrowded part. Only once you've done all the networking part you'd probably start stacking lanes exactly. Before you would double the line Santa Monica - West La, you'd probably want a line SM - Getty, SM - Venice Marina From the airports tunnels would be leaving not in 1-3 directions but in 6-12 directions.
It's interesting watching the development of this boring activity. When you conduct activities in the earth you change the natural components of it and the structural integrity changes which can become better or worse. Hypothetically, if you had this project in NYC, how would you go about constructing and realizing this project without negatively impacting or risking the structural integrity of the existing transit and transportation systems?
FYI: Gotthard Base Tunnel used the tunnel material to create the walls of the tunnel, manufacturing the concrete segments to line the tunnel onsite. This is not a new concept. Please, can you shed some light on why a TBM cannot dig through soft rock very well?
It will be interesting to see if they can actually reduce the time of construction and the cost so the plans become possible. I guess it will be up to how "up to date" tunneling technology really is and what improvements if any rocket engineers can have to offer. Elon is involved so i expect some progress. But will it be big enough for the plans suggested? Time will tell.
The things noone can do it but the whole world for me to accept all.... Unbelievable the world you have built. I must live with the crazy world of poeples
I was missing the most important bit, what cost pr km lane? current vs hoped. And the elevator premise strikes me as a crippling bottleneck. I really think you need to do a simulation of this with real traffic data for at real small area of LA. Every elevator location will need side tunnels going up and down in speed from 200km/h to not block the main tunnel. So if you intend to have an extreme number of elevators to compensate for the bottleneck you'll suddenly double the tunnel requirements just for exits on top of the merging complexity which has to be very dramatic in itself. Forget beautiful renderings that are void of reality, you need an actually working small scale scheme and I don't think the elevator premise allows that. Conventional ramps seem vastly superior. They can be far fewer with heavy flow and you can do the final 100+meters on surface roads. Any success of such a tunnel system will likely be taxed to maximum capacity until at least matching the existing road capacity. Demand will be heavy from day one. A single user batman style scheme will not work. Nor will carts. Where do you store those carts? how do you handle the logistics of getting them to where needed. Cars can move themselves. The redundancy is pure overhead. Just implement an autopilot mode for those tunnels and of course only EVs are allowed access in tunnels.
A pod in a hyperloop operates in a vacuum so that means no air pressure and definetely no sonic booms. Very nice and actually being fully electric it would be very efficient as there would be no emissions from it.
A few possible explanations, here's a couple I can think of. 1. It's below 1 atmosphere of pressure but not a complete vacuum, you can see at the end a lot of dust is kicked up and it appears like it's floating in at least some amount of air. 2. Even if it's a pure vacuum sound can travel through solid matter, the camera is mounted to the vehicle so the vibrations of the vehicle still travel to and get picked up by the microphone.

This topic is very interesting and I would like to learn more about it. Is there any youtube channel/website/book that talks about building tunnels and covers topics like future innovations that could cut down costs? If you have any links or advices for me please comment :)!
guys what if you make pods be 'on demand' pre-bookable that would require number of people for given cost function to engage the ride? that would also make people know each other more when tunnels are super dense
I am so stoked about the work Elon and his team are performing. I think that this is a viable solution for longer trips. I hope that bike storage is incorporated into the design to facilitate the trip to and from the Boring Travel terminal (pun intended). A bike ride bracketing some screen time in the tunnel would be a much better commute than any car-bound route. The brick offshoot triggered some chuckles, but this is a perfect example of the creative genius at work. Very practical. I want some super bricks! One thought, though - Why have so much glass in the pod? Given common sense and the test video wouldn't it make sense to minimize window area?
This accumulation of extraordinary intelligence, initiative, creativity, capability, character and good intention is rare to find. We have to thank Elon Musk and his staff, shame on the ones who try to embed him and fight with dirty methods (negative propaganda and slander) against him. Instead they should simply compete for the best outcome for humanity.
Wao, this guy really going to make some changes hope this works out well! Sounds very logical and great ideas! hahahah party tunnel trippy tunnel! hahaha legend
Make me think about asimov's books about the adventure of elija bailey. Would there be any materials to make the walls that would dry faster than concrete and that you would be able to mold from within the machine (adding maybe 40% of crushed rocks from the digging process). You would then only have liquid goo in and liquid goo out through pipes.
To be optimistic is to hope for currently unforeseen solutions to problems now and in the future to come. If all people world wide regardless of race, religion, sexuality etc...if all of us were presented with current day and future problems that need to be solved in order for humanity to thrive continuously, then the power of our minds will offer real solutions. One solution to a problem I can see is over population on transportation systems. What if medication is offered to a certain percentage of our population that are willing to be medicated. You see when a person is properly medicated then that person actually slows down and becomes less active, but active enough to provide for themselves. Some people love to be medicated and numb. If all humans were given the right to make life decisions that suit their personal lives then the answers to our problems begin to show and reveal themselves. Also if everyone were not pressured into a stereotype to have many children and buy a house and have more kids etc.........individuality needs to be promoted in order to create a new world order for all people world wide.
SuperSMT they win by burning fossil fuel? How does this play out when all the oil is gone? Or prices of oil go skyhigh. Meanwhile Elon's hyperloop will function fine for free on solar and other natural and sustainable sources of energy.
@@SpaceyCortex electric planes are something Elon has shared interest in pursuing the future development of, but its still really far off, so maybe that'll be a possibility in the future.
What on earth happened to Elon? O.o He looks so much younger and refreshed here... no saggy, watery eyes, smooth skin and even his mind and talking speed seem to have improved. WOW. lol. Maybe Grimes does him good... or he, for once, got a good nights sleep :D
I hear Tesla is finally getting passed some of their major over-automation problems, which would mean he can stop sleeping on his shitty couch in a conference room.
A lot of questions but not a single one about emergencies. What about a fire in a tunnel or at an underground terminal or a station? Are there evacuation routs or whatever? What about pressure and air systems for breathing, will there be any fail-safe system or whatever? What about security threats? How security will be provided? Possibility of terrorist attack. What about possible hacking of a managing computer system? There are a lot of relevant questions apart the celebration party?!
Basically the system will be similar with current subway. Sprinkler, emergency exit, monitoring system. If subway can work this can work. How? Well it is a very deep topics but easy to solve as long as you know how to design.
Never thought I'd be so interested in public transit outside of aviation. This is awesome

The dirt bricks are for building houses, not the tunnel itself. The color wouldn't matter like cinder block colors don't matter.
They use it for the tunnel. And modern bricks use chemical as bonding agent. You really do not need to worry much about consitency of the dirt.

Talk about transport, sure. This will end up being used for living space as long as radiation limits are in check. Dang. This is awesome!
Before you would double the line Santa Monica - West La, you'd probably want a line SM - Getty, SM - Venice Marina
From the airports tunnels would be leaving not in 1-3 directions but in 6-12 directions.
Starting at 13:50
Fantastic work
When they want to use the dirt from the tunnel for reinforcement, did they say how they would cure the cement quickly enough ?
Jen needs more screen time
Is she hot or interesting? I haven't got to that part yet.
The solution to traffic issues is single lanes of teslas in tiny single wide tunnels moving at 22mph, obviously. Musk is absolutely genius 🤡
600 !!!👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing, totally awesome !
FYI: Gotthard Base Tunnel used the tunnel material to create the walls of the tunnel, manufacturing the concrete segments to line the tunnel onsite. This is not a new concept. Please, can you shed some light on why a TBM cannot dig through soft rock very well?
Daniel Le Couilliard Because the tunnel collapses onto the boring machine, before walls can be built.
I'm sure that issue can be solved.
EPB machines are already being used in soft ground conditions.
Why is the video so silent :( I‘m un the gym and cannot ear any boring word
Are you using headphones, or trying to make everyone listen?
From UK here & I Love Elon Musk . What a guy he is
It's an interesting notion, the dream of an uncluttered straight line to the destination.
Men like Elon only come once a century! He's this century's Einstein❤️
Biniam Gaming Einstein was a scientist. Wrong comparison.
Dave S I’m sorry, what? Get out of the internet.
Karen Cioffi Don’t tell me you believe him...
AKzebraMiner Dave S is using multiple accounts. He's Karen
Biniam Gaming Do you have proof?
What happens at around 44:10? Steve says, “You’re number three, I believe.” To what is he referring?
I was there 😎
JEFFREY SOLORIO how were you able to attend?
Yeah how were u able to attend?
A pod in a hyperloop operates in a vacuum so that means no air pressure and definetely no sonic booms. Very nice and actually being fully electric it would be very efficient as there would be no emissions from it.
If the hyperloop tube has no air in it, why do I hear the vehicle and it's echo? 25:00
Sound is vibrations. Vibrations still obviously reach the camera.
I understand your points, but if you were designing it why would you put a mic in
*+Zach* - Do you think they designed the camera?
They probably just strapped a GoPro to it or something similar.
They didn't design the camera they designed the cart. It just seems odd the whole thing thats all
how do i go about buying the cinder blocks
How is Elon getting younger day by day?

great to see this but please have the sound level higher. even with my volume on max its very quiet
I'm scared for my headphones turning the volume up that much! Lol
Is there a version where the sound doesn't keep cutting out in during the most interesting bits?
How would you get out in case of emergencies especially thirty levels down?
Elon is one of the few not driven by profits, but for the better of humanity.
This topic is very interesting and I would like to learn more about it.
Is there any youtube channel/website/book that talks about building tunnels and covers topics like future innovations that could cut down costs?
If you have any links or advices for me please comment :)!
Grimes sent me here
That's funny cause I still have no idea who she is other than she dates/dated? Elon.
"We are building a pyramid and a temple for you."
And you should.
guys what if you make pods be 'on demand' pre-bookable that would require number of people for given cost function to engage the ride? that would also make people know each other more when tunnels are super dense
16:08 When mentioning the "enormous" ventilation duct, he says it's a 3-inch pipe. I think he meant to say 3-foot pipe?
Wow incredible he has invented a tunnel... what a revolutionary....
This is great! and it's the future
46:20 Elon!!! Don't cry!!! We support!!!!
Great content. Really quiet volume
I missed it :/ I guess I can still watch it tho
Will the curves/turns in the tunnel be banked?
The topic is boring to some. A fantastic solution to others.
What font type is used in their PowerPoint?
Does Boring Company uses imperial system during operations? Or is it only for US communication purposes?
They should have asked where he's going to build the pods and when it will be available to the public
Funky Morganics This is a scientific video. Please take your politics out of it.
Funky Morganics That’s off topic. Stop trolling. I’m not going to warrant your bullshit attempts at triggering people with a response.
Biniam Gaming Lol
Why are you asking people completely random irrelevant questions?
Could be realized in a cooperation with Tesla.
Hey I was wondering if you guys could invent a small pipe to vape THC in-which you can recharge the battery kinetically.
What is an EIR?

U'll doit for sure.i have no doubt.n able to change history n progress in d tech of boring machine.n make history.
Make a hyperloop between all continents. Europe to the US first!
please dont
Hyperloop is not ideal for distances more than several hundred miles. For thousand+ mile trips, airplanes still win out.
SuperSMT they win by burning fossil fuel? How does this play out when all the oil is gone? Or prices of oil go skyhigh. Meanwhile Elon's hyperloop will function fine for free on solar and other natural and sustainable sources of energy.
@@SpaceyCortex electric planes are something Elon has shared interest in pursuing the future development of, but its still really far off, so maybe that'll be a possibility in the future.
anybody know what jacket elon is wearing?
What on earth happened to Elon? O.o He looks so much younger and refreshed here... no saggy, watery eyes, smooth skin and even his mind and talking speed seem to have improved. WOW. lol. Maybe Grimes does him good... or he, for once, got a good nights sleep :D
Yeah who knows, all those problems at Tesla might have finally started to be settled.
yeah was thinking the same. finally got some sleep.
He did get a new gf...
