    😀 A BIT ABOUT US:
    We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
    So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
    Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
    We hope you enjoy coming with us, and we’ll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

    nice to meet you. My name is Yasuhiro from Japan. I live in Hokkaido. I always enjoy watching your TH-cam videos of driving in Japan. Well, this time, I was asked about the red light hut along the road. That is a hut that makes sure that certain vehicles follow the traffic rules. A nuclear power plant is under construction in Aomori, and we are monitoring whether the vehicles involved in the construction are causing trouble for local residents. Looking forward to driving videos. Take care and have fun.

    At temples, the water you see with a cup on a stick is for pouring over each hand and putting a little in your mouth without touching the cup, then spitting it out in the rocks. At the end, fill the cup and then tip the cup up to let the water wash the handle you touched. Enjoying your videos.

    There is a HUGE gift-giving culture in Japan. You guys should stock up on a few things to give out to people who you appreciate! Doesn't have to be expensive things, packets of wet wipes, small towels or handkerchiefs, even merch from your own store would be amazing.

    • @anneyday3493
      @anneyday3493 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The less valuable, but cute or useful, things the better. It is entirely too easy to get into a gift war if you see someone more than once that can get very uncomfortable. Something from your own culture is always appropriate if you can get it, like tiny magnets, keychains, printed t-towels, bottle openers, postcards, or if you have unused things in your van. Put aside a nice thing too for unexpected use, like a nice bottle of wine, or such, if you get broken down and someone rescues you, you can give them that nicer gift along with your thanks.

    • @andrewjones-productions
      @andrewjones-productions ปีที่แล้ว

      No. It is a construction 'manner check'. Essentially, making sure that dump trucks and the like are driving according to road traffic regulations as well as company regulations. This is what is written on the sign beneath the window. The flashing red lights are somewhat misleading, hence why you thought it was a 'koban'.

    It seems that the booth with red flashing lights is a self-regulatory checkpoint for construction companies at work nearby, making sure truck drivers are driving safely. I don't see many of them in my part of Japan, but maybe you were going through places with many elder farmers or children walking on town's main roads.

    The little building could be a “police box”, in cities a policeman or several would work there. It would have sleeping areas as well. I think in country areas, they are mostly empty. But you could go there to call the police. Of course, you can call the police from your phone in your house as well.

    • @5chevin5
      @5chevin5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roblundy4203 He only said bronze for the seated Buddha (I believe), but it really doesn't matter, all very tall Buddhas, all very cool. The Ushiku Buddha is made of bronze and is the 4th largest in the world of any category and the Sendai one is the 7th. Im certainly no scholar or gatekeeper, I just happen to live near the Ushiku one and was there recently so these obscure facts are fairly fresh in my head.

    I would have gone up the stairs. I did that at the Bunker Hill monument in Charleston, Massachusetts, and it makes the view that much more special. The Ushiku Daibutsu statue is 50% taller, but I'd go for it.
    I am surprised that you never saw an ice cream vending machine before. We had one at my junior high school, and I must have bought 500 ice cream sandwiches in my time there.

    25:16 The expressway has discounts though. If you get an ETC card (only available through a Japanese credit card or rental car shop for duration of the rental vehicle) you get a discount over paying cash. They also have a holiday discount, night discount, and a few more. Also, to drive from Tokyo Station to Aomori ferry terminal the prices are ¥16,540 $114.41 £90.08 if paying cash. However, ETC card would be: ¥15,470 $107.01 £84.25. But if you were to drive and spend the night at a rest area, that price is ¥11,090 $76.65 £60.39. You can also get an unlimited ETC pass for a set rate that allows for unlimited ETC usage as well.

    We have been trying to follow along with your a\Japanese adventures when we can, but have been moving across Peru quite quickly this month.
    It's been truly fascinating exploring Japan with you guys, such a contrast to van life in South America.

    Hello, thank you for sharing your lovely journey with us. I would like to know how is the RV park places? Any chance to get power connection? And shower facility is provided? Thanks.

      Hi Jessica - we are off grid prepared - so we have a shower in the van - although in reality we tend to bucket wash. And we have solar on the roof and our Jackery UK powerbank and foldable solar panel so we have stayed at no more than 10 campsites in 5 years and boon dock / wildcamp as much as we can to keep costs down and enable us to save money for shipping 😉🌺 But beach showers in the heat are the best, and lots of countries have shower solutions - like truck stops etc. Happy travels !!

    In the US, you're supposed to stop at railroad crossings when not flashing. I've never seen it enforced, I've only seen school buses adhere to the law. I think it's written for liability.

    On our next visit to Japan we will definitely go further north - this time we only go as far as Tokyo one way and Hiroshima the other, main island stuff.
    I hope that, when you travel back down south, you visit Hiroshoma. We've just been there before moving on to Osaka a couple of days ago, and it is an amazing city. Visit Hiroshima Castle, have a matcha ice-cream, and see the history of the city there. Obviously it's a recreation, since it is only a few hundred metres from the hypocentre of the A Bomb explosion, but the story of the development of the area from a low-lying estuary is fascinating.
    Mentioning the A Bomb, if you wander the streets east of the Memorial Park, there's a marker stone on a small back road that is set at the point directly under the explosion. Plan more time than you think you need, visit the Memorial Park and museum.
    Whilst in the area, visit Miyajima Shrine, try the oysters, try not to lose things to the seemingly ravenous deer, and help out by picking up the odd bits of litter that some of the deer 'acquire' and then lose interest in...😁

    That little booth is to check that construction equipment are following regulations. It has it written under the window. This is not a 'koban' (Police Box) as someone has suggested.

    I believe those roadside booths are for motorists to pay road maintenance workers, as their jobs take a toll. Having to pay money to ring that huge bell…it’s not a toll cheap. I could tell a joke about that sedan chair at 16:16, but then I’d get carried away 😂

    In-store Robots are actually becoming common in the US. Several supermarket chains I go to have had them, for several years now.
