And yet, there is a small but loud contingent _right now_ that believes the Earth to be _flat._ People flew into conferences held in places like Denver and near Dallas, ALONG _GEODESICS,_ to attend these conferences.
The Ancient Greeks (probably among others) did EXTREMELY SIMPLE testing that provided quite strong evidence as to the shape of the planet. When we look at other planets using what today are fairly basic lenses, they're clearly spheres. And yet, there walk among us 'neo-alchemists' still convinced that the best way to understand the universe is by taking whatever garbage your own brain tells you is or must be true - often based on some garbage generated in the brain of some other rando, of course - and clinging to that like grim death!
It's quite impressive. It really harks back to the model that the Catholic Church used for years. Don't bother to "ask God" (i.e., do some tests and see what reality is actually like), assume you know better, effectively flip God off, and consider it a job well done that you've convinced other randos. Of course, this then lends more credence to your beliefs apparently, because after all, such a large group of people stuck in an 'idiot feedback loop' can't all be wrong, right?
So, yes - "brilliantly stupid", and yet, all too real.

Oh bollocks! I have an old second hand receiver with a remote which came with some obscure brand batteries called "Robust - Extra heavy duty" and when it fails I usually just give a nudge or tap to the battery lock and lo and behold it works again! It also works if I roll the batteries. Now I can just imagine having instead Duracell batteries. Then the remote would work for millions of years. When the imminent Ragnarök Apocalypse will wipe the earth and the survivors will find those remotes with Duracell batteries they will still work. Or the sage of the tribe will impart his wisdom on the subject: "It has been told that the Ancient Ones rolled the batteries to give them more life. The rolling was as a sort of prayer and meditation towards the god of electricity which the Ancient Ones called Nikola Tesla."

It's necessary to speak analogically, but atheists clearly don't take their own beliefs seriously. If it's all just random fluctuations of matter, just randomness, none of it matters and there's nothing to ground normative statements on. It also doesn't make sense that Dawkins treats religion as this random mind virus when it is clearly adaptive behavior. He could even get around his personal problems with it by treating it as a group level metaphor that centers the group, but he doesn't even consider this for some reason.

If there is something I don't get about David Mitchell then it's his misconstrued dislike of atheism. I don't mind him not calling himself an atheist, but he's claimed numerous times that the position of Dawkins and other famous atheists is that "they know that there isn't a god", which according to Mithcell, is ludicrous. For a man who apparently loves correctness and even pedantry, one would think that he would have heard at least one of the millions of atheists pointing to the dictonary definition "atheists do not believe in god" and thus ending his straw man. I'm such a huge Mitchell fan, and also an atheist, so this really grinds my gears.
