Zanac is incredibly intelligent. I would even argue that his intelligence is on par with Renner but not in the same manner. Where Renner is intelligent, she lack empathy to understand human, I would say she is book smart, or high intelligence. Zanac is incredible at understanding people, the world and how human works in general so he would be "street smart" or has very high Wisdom. He is the ideal king. He is the only person to be able to see that his sister lack humanity and he is the only one that saw the Humanity in Ainz.
He would of made a great advisor to Ainz. He was the person that could say "No" to Ainz and give him an honest opinion. Sadly the floor guardian did not value his talent and only saw the brilliance of his sister while Ainz saw the brilliance in Zanac. Therefore, he was not given the choice like Renner.

Same thing with Marquis Raeven. He is the typical scheming evil noble trope but subversed. He was once exactly that, but changed when he became a father. He was one of the only nobles who actually cared about the Kingdom and wanted to make it a better place for everyone. Alas, his child was also his weakness, as Nazarick forced him into betraying his country by kidnapping his son and blackmailing him, as Renner had said.

If there is one person in the world you absolutely do NOT want to piss off, it's Ainz. This man will turn your existance itself into a living hell. Those nobles and their entire families, children included, will be tortured for generations to come. Even Demiurge's actions will seem merciful in comparison.
Also, Zanac's death is especially tragic if you consider that under different, albeit unlikely circumstances, they could have been friends. Zanac is one of the only people who understood that Ainz is not simply evil, and that he is not simply some godlike figure, but that he has a human side. They started talking to eachother like friends, and you can see how Ainz respected him. But it was not meant to be, Ainz is meant to forever stand atop the world, all by himself.

@@Isaac-eh6uu Ainz is nowhere near that merciful to outsiders. Unless it concerns Nazarick, he is normally just pragmatic, but if you piss him off, he can get genuinely cruel. It was partly displayed in season 3. In his own words: "Death is a mercy in Nazarick".
At best their families will be killed earlier on. After all, Ainz already gave orders to exterminate basically the entire Kingdom, safe for some useful people. Why should he spare the families of useless scum, when he's already massacring everyone else? Even if he did, they will only grow to hate him anyway.
In the novels it was pretty clear:
“-I understand. I understand. I completely understand you all. Everybody here wishes for the same thing, correct?”
The nobles began nodding their heads furiously,
“Is that so? Well, I will not kill you then. Albedo - send them to Neuronist.”
      “-Understood.”
“Your Majesty, what about our families...?”
Ainz did not overlook one of the nobles attempting to whisper to him.
      “Your families too?”
Ainz smiled. Of course, they had no way of perceiving that.
“What will I do with you all? Albedo, inquire where their families are and send them over too.”
“Yes, Ainz-sama. -You all, come over here.”

There was a greater than zero chance that Zanac in a battle would have been able to move Ainz's heart to be more merciful in the razing of the Kingdom, if they had demonstrated that they as a people were worthy of mercy. Course that all these nobles decided to backstab their king was just more proof over the mountain of it that even for humans they were scum and there was nothing worth preserving.
I think it's worth thinking back to the Lizardman arc and how they faced the same situation: The squabbles they had with each other they buried, and they all worked united to face their common enemy; which is in stark contrast with the Kingdom that buried and destroyed itself with politics long before the hammer fell down upon them.

But that was exactly the moment Zanac's severed head was brought to him, and that was that, mercy cranked down from zero to negative 1000. Still, I respect Zanac for being the one and only New Worlder to not only see the fading human inside of Ainz but even, if only for a moment, draw that human side out. Plus just respectfully speaking his mind the way he did earned Ainz' respect.

My boy Zanac got done dirty. Just think about it. He got the genuine respect of Ainz. He told Albedo when he received the head to bury him with respect. Rather than turning him into a death knight or doing something else to him. I also believe that Ainz probably would have spared the kingdom. Sure he would ruin them in war but would have left them in ruin to rebuild. But because they backstabbed, Ainz was done with it. Total destruction for them all.

Ainz wouldn't have spared the kingdom most likely. But what he would've done is probably destroyed the kingdom and destroyed any remnants or powers of the kingdom. Then gave the survivors the choice of death or servitude to the Sorcerer's Kingdom. So effectively the kingdom was still, and completely destroyed, but more people probably would've survived. And thus not contradicting Ainz's original intentions.

Even the King and Brain cower or would give themselves up to meet his demands. Zanac wearing Gazef's armor and standing before him while acknowledging that they both have to fight even though there might be other ways probably reminded him of Gazef in season 1.

When you first see Zanac, a few seasons ago, he has the look and feel of a whiny, fat, perverted little backstabber. But then you find out , over the episodes, that he is decent, brave and very smart. Almost as smart as his sister, who was called a monster because she is way more intelligent than anyone else in this kingdom. Zanac will be missed and the nobles who killed him will soon realize they made a terrible mistake and sent their families to a fate worst than death. Neuronist Painkill is a very talented torturer. The rest of the army is royally screwed, Cocytus has lost a battle once and will not let this happen again, not when his boss and friends are watching, and Mare may look weak and meek, but has often been described as the most powerfull of the floor guardians and as a very violent fighter, when given the opportunity. Just look at how he captured Hilma, there was no need to break her leg and pull her away by her hair.
Other than that, the adventure group from the Theocracy really was a bunch of weirdos, especially the witch. With a hat like that, no wonder she looked so tired and pissed off.

However those that come later, those that did not experience firsthand my kingdom’s wrath, would grow bold and repeat history. I want to make a message that is plain for any fool to see. It's amazing how quickly Zanac went from being a mildly unlikable background character, to a sympathy-inspiring man clearly out of his depth, to a brave leader risking certain death (or worse) to plead his case for mercy to an entirely alien and unassailable monstrosity (even realizing that he isn't entirely alien but has the same human desires as everyone else), to an utterly tragic figure who died on his feet and with his sword in his hands.
I love Overlord because it focuses on characters and political intrigue with just enough humor and action to keep things from being too dark and heavy. It's a show (not just an anime, but a SHOW) done right.

Makes you scratch your head sometimes.
Here you have an individual, whom is trying to figure out a way to at least try and minimize the damage
that was caused by another individual's drunken action, which was the most idiotic move made, and hope the
fact that it would be enough to forgive said actions made by that individual (whom I'm curious to know the aftermath of said drunken individual, i.e. imprisoned).
Between a quick and painless death, and a slow and painful one, we all know which would be the most preferred choice.
Definitely not the choices that the Prince's staff, Retainers, High Ranking Officials and Officers have made.
Unfortunately when humans panic or under a lot of stress/duress, desperate decisions will be made.
However, more often times than not, the outcome of the decisions made, would most likely end up being the worst choice possible.
Yes friends and family members will be spared, but at what price, and is it guaranteed?
Some took the smarter path was before this occurred (i.e. the princess), but the steps they took, in order to survive,
must have been made way ahead in advance, in order to come out on top.
As far as the outcome is concerned, yes there will be red flags, the question is, "How heavy are the losses going to amount to at the end?"
    Oh well....
    Until next time,
    Enjoy!

the death of zanac is a well tought out event of overlord,
betrayals like this has happened in history, it reminded me a lot of when pompey the great got betrayed by people who owed both there titels and kingdom to him in an attempt to suck up to Caesar and Caesar (depends on what source you reading) started crying when he saw pompey's head and he was not happy at all that in turn lead to their own demise,
it also shows that the nobles of the kingdom care more for themselves rather than the kingdom itself, it was also an act of stupidity on the nobles part because they just killed the son of the ruler that whas the sole reason why they even hade there titles to begin with who hade offerd his own life but whas turned down,
so even if ainz had no meeting with Zanac he would have still killed them becus of how disloyal and that they are more of use to him dead than alive but because of his respect for Zanac he made sure that thay got a well deserved painful death instead of killing them quickly on the spot,
Ainz also shows respect for Zanac by having them killed, it something that Zanac himself should have done but can't because he's dead so Ainz does it for him.

One of the things that struck me and made me think that it wasn't just a throwaway line was when Ainz, after meeting with Zanac, said "that's true loyalty". In the moment it may seem like he's just saying that cause Zanac is showing how loyal to the bitter end he will be with his people, but I think it goes a bit deeper. One of the reasons Ainz has always been worried about how he looks in front of his subordinates and why he's so careful with his wording is because he's cautious of one of them betraying him if they find out that he's not this all knowing great leader that thinks 50 steps ahead. Imo, he meant "that is true loyalty" as more of, that type of loyalty towards his fellow men is not just written in a system that tells him he should be loyal.
I also think that that's one of the reasons he is searching for his fellow players. He wants someone that can relate to him. As much as the floor guardians want to, they can never truly relate to him and what he goes through. Zanac mightve been the closet to a relatable human that values loyalty and family above all. Zanac in the end had the same ideals that Ainz has, as he thought while riding back to the camp. He mentioned, and I'm paraphrasing, "I just wanted my kingdom to be respected". That's ideally what Ainz wants as well. He wants people to see Nazarick in the same light that he and he's old teammates used to

That is if he even accepted resurrection. You have to accept the resurrection call otherwise you don't resurrect. I personally don't see Zanak resurrecting or even throwing away his humanity for himself.
He said "I am no king, I only wanted to reform the kingdom" while thinking about how Ainz thought about the happiness of his subjects instead. Zanack wanted change, Ainz want his children to be happy. For that reason Zanack thought himself the inferior king, Ainz would make reforms to make people happier, Zanack feels like he just wanted change because he thought he knew best.
I don't think with this new realization he would have accepted to live let alone discard his humanity.

seeing Zanac get betrayed like that might have stung deep on Ainz, it's an example of what he fears most right now. His very much capable retainers turning on him.
The difference is that Ainz' retainers are more than willing to die in his name while Zanac did not have that same faith placed on himself by those around him.

The nobles, and their sense of entitlement, were always the blight on the Re-Estize Kingdom.
[And Empire - there was a reason that the Bloody Emperor started his reign by terrorizing the nobles of the Empire and putting them in their place.]

Zannac probably had one of my favorite character developments in the entire show. They made him seem like a prince who just wanted power and a typical noble who we have seen many times in in other novels but he came through and we learned all he ever wanted was the best for his own people and he would happily sacrifice himself for his people. Did not expect him to turn out this way when i first saw him in the anime

I never really cared for Zanac but this season, particularly the past few episodes really impressed upon me just how logical, fearless and daring he was to protect his people; the marks of a true ruler. The conversation he had with Ainz aided to provide Ainz a means to have a proper conversation with someone who wasn't just a yes man for a change and Zanac earned his respect completely. It really tugged on my heart strings when I saw his head in that bag but it just goes to show, that in situations that are high risk there will always be traitors concerned about only their well-being. I appreciated when Ainz reiterated to Mare to make sure that his killers were thoroughly punished, even if they begged to be killed, it demonstrates that he is indeed not just an undead but still a being that is comprised of intricate feelings like any other.

Great points. It's like to make some points about death and dying:
Death is an absolute. Anything and everything that was ever created or that has ever lived; will eventually rot, decay, break down, die, and cease to exist. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad thing. On the contrary, it's an essential thing. Death is what gives Life its meaning. Knowing that your end is assured, makes humans and animals strive to make the most out of the short time they're granted. Furthermore, Death helps clear the way for new life and new creations -- recycling old materials into something new and beautiful. The act of dying and the state of becoming dead can also either be prolonged with great pain and suffering or quick and painless. Most preferring the latter. So in this example with Ainz -- if someone were to die no matter what, that it had to be done, killing them quickly and painlessly would be considered a sign of respect and a show of kindness and compassion. Especially if their remains were handled with the utmost care and respectfully buried. Even more so if final words of peaceful transitioning were granted to them along with a moment of silence for remembrance. On the other hand, ironically, torturing someone and causing them pain is also still a show of care. Why? Well, why are you torturing them? The answer is that they have done something so unforgivable, that you spared emotions and thoughts for them. You got angry. In that anger, you want to impress upon them that what they did was wrong. You want them to fully know, understand, and feel that what they did was wrong and unforgivable. Which the overall outcome here is learning and wanting for apology and repentance. It may be difficult for some to understand, but it is still a show of care and concern. Otherwise, why would anyone spend the energy or effort even bothering to try to make someone understand what they did was wrong and be made to suffer for it? No. True punishment would be to be killed painfully and horrifically, for no reason at all. And then the memory of who you were and your deeds to be completely forgotten about and erased from history. Complete isolation in a frozen void. Nothing to interact with, nothing to entertain you or stimulate you, nothing to remember or care for you. Just nothing. Allowing you to slip into insanity for eons while your soul is left to decay bit by bit until nothing is left of you and you are erased from all existence.

Zanac didn't just gain Ainz' respect but ours as well. The scene when Ainz unfolded the bag that held Zanac's severed head, I instantly remembered Ainz promise to give him a painless death and the fact that he was someone who is true to his word. This made me sad. And instantly knew that the nobles will definitely suffer for it. Can't wait for the next episode next week!

I went back recently into the novel to double check this chapter that this whole episode takes place and here's a couple interesting changes. One is that when the nobles approached Ainz on horseback Albedo never said anything, Ainz saw them coming from a far and he didn't look at Albedo he just said "Let them in" that is because he had already guessed what happened to Zanac and why they were approaching so he wanted to bring them in just to confirm that they killed Zanac and to punish them for their betrayal. That whole aggressive sitdown he had after seeing Zanac's head showing that he was so irritated he dropped the whole act of trying to present himself as a Supreme ruler, but instead just someone who was genuinely upset. That happened before the nobles actually arrived and presented Zanac's head so Ainz was already furious before even seeing his head because he had realized what occurred without even seeing it. Another change was Zanac's words about not thinking he was fit to be king and Ainz's words of happiness going through his head. That didn't happen when he was riding on horseback but instead when he drew his sword to defend himself against those traitors. It felt even sadder knowing that the words of "happiness" Ainz said was literally his final thought.

I haven't read the novels, but I adored Zanac from his first moment on screen - I thought he was just such a fun, unique subversion of the chubby rich guy anime archetype, and he was by far my favorite character. He went out like a fucking boss, so it's hard to be sad about that, but I'm going to miss the hell out of him in the rest of the show. :(

When Ainz hold Aura's hand and told her that even if they want to die give them the slowest most painful death (something like that) i really felt it , like how enraged he was . And another thing , those filthy nobles didn't let Ainz keep his promise to Zanac . Ainz told him that he will give him a peaceful death but oh boi look what happened .

I think Ainz still have a couple of powerful enemies that he will have to overcome before conquering the continent like The Platinum Dragon Lord, who is probably the strongest creature in the world (If the words of the Necromancer Hero is to be belived) and its mentioned in the Light Novel that he is in pocess of multiplie World Class itens. And we can't forget of the Theocracy that have Godkins (People who are above the Hero Level) and World Class itens as well.
