    I remeber watching Daleks Master Plan (well listening to it) and just being so shocked at all the deaths (pretty gruesome deaths too) from characters you generally expect to survive. Though I couldn't imagine any of the other Doctors taking on someone who killed their own brother on as a companion (if you count Sara as a companion). I really like the Tenth Planet, mainly because the Cybermen are really interesting in that story and not just 'killer robots' which they tended to act as in later stories (new and classic).

    10. The Green Death - Best departure for a companion and perhaps the best trivia for a Doctor Who story ever. Condoms were used to make some of the maggots. Only in the 70s.
    9. The Chase - A guilty pleasure that's full of bizzare Suess-esque ideas.
    8. Caves of Androzani - A great suspense story and the best final Doctor story in the show.
    7. Frontios - The amount of hell everyone went through to make this story pays off.
    6. Ark in Space - Quite a memorable story with some dark tones scattered about and the Wirrn are simple yet effective. Never has bubble wrapped looked so frightening.
    5. Kinda - A great story that has a very suspenseful atmosphere looming over it and the concept of the Mara is interesting until you see the actual thing trapped in the mirrors. Good thing the CGI version looks better.
    4. The Tenth Planet - A chillingly great story with the Cybermen reveal in episode 1 sending shivers down my spine.
    3. Remembrance of the Daleks - Best Dalek story ever made with stuff the new show would find intimidating.
    2. Survival - A fitting end to the classics and an emotionally charged story.
    1. Earthshock - Pretty much Doctor Who at it's darkest and the Cybermen look amazing.

      Good list but I would have to put "Genesis Of The Daleks" on the list as certainly a top tier episode and add some more Fourth Doctor story's as there were so many quality serials in that era. Glad to see "Ark In Space" getting some much deserved love and loved your assessment of it. Definitely has some wonderfully creepy moments and great atmosphere despite budget limitations. Plus the Doctors speech is one of the best ever in Who and agreed about the use of the bubble wrap.lol. God bless.😀

    A cool list with some rather different choices. My list is a little more straightforwardly obvious:
    1. Genesis Of The Daleks (My first ever Who story, so a good start!)
    2. Pyramids Of Mars
    3. The War Games
    4. The Deadly Assassin
    5. The Caves Of Androzani
    6. The Robots Of Death
    7. The Talons Of Weng-Chiang
    8. The Seeds Of Doom
    9. The Green Death
    10. City Of Death

    I'm really pleased to see The Mind Robber on this list. It's just a wonderful, fun episode, and I love rewatching it. The scene of the Doctor f****** up the Jamie puzzle is genuinely hilarious, and the Doc's (and Zoe's) reaction is priceless.
    I suppose a couple of titles that I'd have on this list are: "Terror of the Zygons" because the Zygons are just phenomenal villains. My favourite hands down. "Inferno" is just dripping with atmosphere, and Brigade Leader is brilliant. "Caves of Androzani" is also a gritty treat. For McCoy, I might be inclined to go with "The Curse of Fenric".

    Thanks for putting this together! Okay to put my thoughts on each pick?10-Part of me wants to treat this as a standalone episode, like Mission To The Unknown and have the 100,000 BC stuff as a three-parter, like Planet of Giants. I feel it works better that way.
    9-I didn't know too much about this one, but I was really impressed when I watched the full colour version. Nice conspiracy thriller. Same goes for The Mind of Evil-two fantastic gems buried in the Pertwee era I think.
    8-I LOVED the novelisation of this-it helped get me into Doctor Who full stop. Could not believe it when it came back (nearly all of it anyway). Personal favourite here.
    7-Watched bits of this on UK Gold years ago (their omnibuses really helped my growing adoration of the show). Watched this fairly recently, and I thought it wasn't half bad. Prefer
    the previous story though-THAT one left its mark on me. Love it.
    6-Got a healthy respect for this one, as it does show that literally ANYTHING is possible in this show. Quite surreal in places.
    5-Interesting choice. Never read it, or seen any of what survives. You might have convinced me to rectify that...
    4-One of my UK Gold discoveries. Far better than most stories surrounding it. In my opinion, should have been the 25th Anniversary story instead of Silver Nemesis. Fair?
    [Also loved the stairs cliffhanger!]
    3-What can I say? First old serial I showed my new Who fan mates... Says it all I think.
    2-Surprised by how much I like this one.
    1-YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME...Currently sits with Power and Evil at the top of my 'Wish these would be found' list. Gutted when I learned how little survives of this! Really good novelisation though...thanks for adding this one.

    The irony of your point about watching Ace's adventures in chronological order was that Ghost Light was originally meant to be later in the season chronologically than where it ended up being due to references in Fenric.

  • @ihateunicorns867
    @ihateunicorns867 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Given that I agree with pretty much everything Stu has to say on Who, I'm surprised he doesn't mention my personal favourite classic Who story, _The Curse of Fenric_ more. Brilliantly written, tense, dark, well-paced, creepy, atmospheric and addressing some deep concepts about the morality of using chemical weapons to end a war against a mass-murdering tyrant. And above all else, doing possibly the evil piece of psychological manipulation ever done to a character in Who where Ace (a victim of child abuse) is tricked into loving and caring for their abuser by presenting them to her in the form of a baby. Forced to humanise someone who she's learnt to cope with by creating a barrier of hatred towards them. Come on… this is writing that transcends the usual Who standard several times over.
    No-one ever talks about this story. It's so good.

    Speaking of the Seventh Doctor and Ace, has anyone hear listened to Thin Ice, Crime of the Century, Animal, and Earth Aid. They were stories originally thought of for Season 27, but didn't officially come out until 2011.

    • @menkomonty
      @menkomonty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have, they're okay. Thin Ice was supposed to be Ace's final story from the way the final played out but of course they just rewrote it so that she stays with the Doctor. Crime of the Century is probably my favourite out of the four. Animal was a little bit weird especially with the monsters and Earth Aid had a good concept but felt the ending was a little anti-climatic. Overall, they are fun to listen to.

    • @JeremiahEcks777
      @JeremiahEcks777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard all four. Now, Seven and Ace are my all-time favourite TV mixture... in extended fiction, it's Seven, Ace and Bernice, so that'll tell you how I fly my flag. But... didn't like these four stories. Really didn't. Wasn't keen on Raine. Thin Ice was a mess, Crime of the Century was bland, Animal was okay but Bambera was wasted, and Earth Aid, whilst best of all four, was not a patch on anything else Big Finish has done.

    • @electricmastro
      @electricmastro 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Huh, interesting. I've heard that the Virgin New Adventures do great at presenting the continuation of the show from Season 26, taking the series to more mature and deeper areas that probably would have been hard to accomplish on TV.

    • @menkomonty
      @menkomonty 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      electricmastro There's a documentary on Virgin Books on one of the Doctor Who DVDs where they say that Bernice sleeps with an Ice Warrior and there's another with some excessive swearing from a character. So you know, a fun bedtime story.

    • @JeremiahEcks777
      @JeremiahEcks777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, and the Virgin books also gave us Russell T. Davies first proper Doctor Who story; Bernice as a character at all (which later gave us Big Finish - which in turn gave us Chimes of Midnight, Jubilee and Spare Parts); Human Nature was adapted from one; a continuing series where without it, Who fiction could have been trapped in a one-way nostalgia exercise.The Virgin series is not perfect but most of it stands out as some of the best Who fiction in history. Big Finish have adapted many of them now - the better ones, although many 'better' ones are set to go.It's easy to take pot shots at some of the lesser elements of them, but if we're going to do that, we can do that with any Who fiction or stream. I can understand the NAs aren't for everybody - we all have a Who stream we don't like (for me it's the 8DAs in the books, or the kiddy new series comics from Who Adventures), but we can't just say it's disposable twaddle. Every stream got someone into Who... and I wouldn't still be a fan if not for the NAs. Genuinely.

    To be fair to The Mind Robber it worked insanely well as a concept in the Big Finish 6th Doctor story Legend of the Cybermen - although I don’t know if you’re referring to the fact that the audio that was already released from this episode wouldn’t have held up, in which case totally fair it needs the visuals.
    This comment isn’t really a slander on your list, I love seeing other people’s opinions. Just thought I’d also shout out an excellent BF story if anyone hasn’t heard it!

Plus I've got a thing for tall 6.3" guys with deep voices,curly hair, big smiles, impossibly long scarfs and a great sense of humor! But I do respect you and your 60's bias and enjoy some of the 60's Doctor Who serials. That being said do you have an Orange Jelly Baby? God Bless.

    A very unique list you have there Stu. That said I must now do the stereotypical thing of posting my own list in the comments without any context as to why some of episodes are on the list but not others. Because of this I'll be extending the list to 20 so as not to piss people.
    20. Kinda
    19. Face of Evil
    18. Earthshock
    17. The Robots of Death
    16. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
    15. Spearhead from Space & Terror of the Autons
    14. The Aztecs

      So many good ones on there. I agree that "Face Of Evil" is such a criminally underrated story. Has so many great and interesting points to it, overall solid story that dares to be different and the scene with the Fourth Doctor and the computer that has part of the Doctors personality and try to kill him is one of the creepiest and chilling in Classic Who.....maybe even Doctor Who history in general!

    There's nothing here that would surprise me for being on someone's top 10 list. Lots of great stories, though I would choose a bit differently myself if I made such a list. I don't personally care for "Ambassadors of Death" for example, but I have friends who adore it for solid reasons beyond the ones mentioned in the video. Some stories not listed in this video that I'd have on my list include "The Aztecs", "Carnival of Monsters", "Horror of Fang Rock", and "Kinda".

      I love "Horror At Fang Rock". Great atmosphere and the Doctor kind of screws up and Leela has to give him a pep talk. Great to see that the Doctor isn't perfect and can't always save everyone.

    Awesome list Stubagfu, see isn't being mainstream fun? I really want to check out the Ambassadors of Death and Fury from the Deep soundtrack. My top 10 mostly consists of Tom Baker and Robert Holmes stories. They just stand out as contributing quintessential Who for me
    10. The Ark In Space (Dodgy effects aside the sheer concept of the Wirrn is terrifying.)
    9. The Hand Of Fear ( A B movie style plot with an emotional departure that did not feel jarring to me)
    8. The Caves Of Androzani ( The cliffhangers for part 1 and 3 never fail to make my jaw drop every time)
    7. Carnival Of Monsters ( Batshit crazy and full of creativity like the Mind Robber but with a bit more substance and intrigue for me)
    6. City Of Death (probably the funniest episode in all of Who history all while having a plot with stakes and tension. Plus Paris looks gorgeous New Who should return there)
    5. Spearhead From Space ( A daring new set-up for the show. Pertwee just oozes charm and the Autons are an ingenious invention.)
    4. The Enemy Of The World (The discovery of this episode was the highlight of the 50th anniversary for me. I enjoy how it broke the conventions of 60's Who. Troughton's performance as both the Doctor and Salamander is really gripping stuff)
    3. The Tomb Of the Cybermen ( It maybe dated but this story still has classic status. The Cybermen's voices genuinely creep me out and the touching words of comfort the Doctor gives to Victoria sums up everything Doctor Who is about).
    2. The Deadly Assassin (Much like The Caves of Androzani and Heaven Sent this story puts the Doctor through hell by disgracing him and by sending him to the Matrix and turning him into Rambo. I enjoyed seeing the inner workings of Gallifrey's rotten to the core society despite it normalising the Time lords a little bit. It helped us understand why the Doctor left Gallifrey in the first place.
    1. Genesis Of The Daleks (Well Stubag summed it up perfectly. I loved how solemn The Doctor is in this story he's far less jokey which really helped emphasis the stakes. I loved Davros's cold and calculating nature. I always get the sense that The Daleks were the most evil little shits in all creation in this story, maybe because the effects of the second world war were still being felt even after 30 years.)

    • @colinmcphan

      I Love your assessment of "The Deadly Assassin". I enjoyed this story immensely from my first time watching it. I love the Fourth Doctor era the most out of several Doctors that I really enjoy due to the amount of quality serials during his 7 year run. Plus Tom seemed truly born to play the Doctor more then any other actor I have watched in the role. What I liked the most is how physical and dirty the Doctor got in this. The one thing I think later writers and Producers failed to capitalize on to some extent was just how physically imposing and intimidating Tom's Doctor could be. At 6.3" and given the size of Tom's hands alone his Doctor struck me as the one that could stand up the best to physical punishment and dish it out as well. He also seemed like he would be the most capable of physically defending his companions (not that the other Doctors couldn't). Plus you got the sense that Tom was always happiest when the dialogue was sharp and witty and he was allowed to get physical. What do you think? God bless.😀

    • @mikeymcdoable
      @mikeymcdoable 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree completely. Tom Baker's Doctor is the complete package for me hence the profile pic :) I also find him to be the most unpredictable, you'd never know if he'd talk his way out of the dilemma or resort to violence.

    Hi Stuart! Please tell us why "Caves of Androzani" didn't make the cut! It seemed to have everything...great Dr/ companion combo, crazy villain in leather, gratuitous costumed monster, a doomsday clock in the form of the Spectroscopy toximia, and for the first time: and adventure with no sympathetic characters to help the Dr and Peri. The music was incredible, and the last 15 minutes where among the most exciting of all Dr who finales. And the best regeneration with all the companions coming back. It's my #1! What do you think ? Was it your #111 choice?

    Don't agree with you on Survival and The Mind Robber, and although I do like The Greatest Show in the Galaxy and do think it's a highly underrated story, I would not include it as one of my favorites. Loved episode 1 of The Mind Robber, but didn't care for the rest of the story, it's my Space Museum. Like your list for the rest though. And as for me, I liked everything about both An Unaerthly Child, all 4 episodes, and The Daleks' Master Plan, even the Christmas episode. I would also probably include Remembrance of the Daleks as #1. But for the most part, I did like your list. And I know everyone's got different opinions, I personally did liked your video. Thanks for posting it.

    don't hate me but... I really don't like genesis of the daleks.
    My reasoning:
    1) I don't like knowing what the daleks evolved from, I really wish we'd kept that aura of mystery about what they once looked like, a race mutated by nuclear war.
    2_ I really dislike the fact that the kaleds were basically just human beings, so many enemies in doctor who are humanoid/originate from humanoids and I feel like the daleks also being added to that list was a mistake
    3) I dislike the idea that the daleks were created quickly, I feel like it should have happened over several decades of mutation and development.

    Fantastic video mate.
    My personal favourite story of all time is Daleks Master Plan. I seriously could do an hour to a two hour long review on why it's so fucking incredible in my opinion. I agree that it has flaws, but the positives far out way the negatives.
    One more thing I'll say on it is that the Daleks are depicted as there best in it. Sure Power shows how manipulative they can be and I can sorta see why power would sometimes be picked over Master Plan, but for me this story is better for them just because it shows how fucking relentless they are; key example being the fact that they assemble a council of aliens just to get the time destructor completed and kill all of them off just so they can have it for there selfish ways in the end.
    I've experienced Master Plan like 17 times to this day and it's still pure gold for me. Listened to it 10 times in 2014.

    I haven't watched much of classic Who yet, basically the entirety of season 1 and 2, and then going around picking and choosing some episodes here and there from the first and second Doctors' run, but I wanna give a huge shoutout to The War Games as I was SO intimidated by the fact it was 10 episodes and, while I like old Who, it can feel like it drags sometimes as someone who grew up in the early 2000s with modern television sensibilities. But I was hooked on it and watched 3 episodes a day and I couldn't get enough of it! Unlike other long stories, this one didn't feel like it dragged at all and I was having a great time with it!

    10. Completely agree, Part 1 is gold, but the rest is rather tedious and just involves the four crew members badgering on about fire.
    9. I really like it, but wouldn't say it's one of the best.
    8. Like a few Troughton stories, still need to see it, but my expectations are high.
    7. Yeah, it's a shame it's the last one, but it is a fitting end and the final scene can reduce me to tears.
    6. See 8.
    5. I've watched pretty much all you can see of it and really enjoyed it. Strange, as I normally don't like Hartnell stories that much.
    4. The greatest Dalek story ever made, hands down.
    3. Personally, I find it a bit long and overrated. I actually prefer Revelation. Controversial, I know.
    2. The most flawless piece of television ever made.

    Some of my favorites:
    1. Vengeance on Varos. Because of the bad rap the Sixth Doctor often gets, I find it important to talk about when he's good. And to me (and many fans), Vengeance on Varos is the Sixth Doctor's best.
    2. The War Games. Yes, it has some issues. Yes, it runs long. And yes, despite the strong beginning and end, the middle is kind of muddled. But, for all its flaws, the War Games is amazing. It's Patrick Troughton's final serial (and the final serial filmed in Black and White), and boy does it go out with a bang. Also, we have to remember how important The War Games is. We knew the Doctor was an alien, but its here that we learn about the Time Lords.
    3. The Three Doctors. So far, there have been four multi-Doctor stories (five if you count "The Light at the End" by Big Finish). And of those four, The Three Doctors is easily the best one. The chemistry and banter between Patrick Troughton and John Pertwee (my favorite Doctor) is great. Also, compared to the other multi-Doctor stories, the threat faced in The Three Doctors feels genuinely deserving of such a momentous occasion.

    Answers to your questions. 1. No (almost 100%). 2. The answer to (1) determines the answer to (2) (A not A etc.), so the answer has be Yes (almost 100%). 3. Not in the least. 4. I can't know for sure, but probably vanishingly close to 0. 5. That is so vague and open-ended a question, it is almost impossible to answer (I don't claim mind reading powers).
    Here's my list, in no particular order (it does not include episodes I haven't seen (including ones it is impossible to see):
    1. Genesis of the Daleks
    2. City of Death
    3. Pyramids of Mars (I have a copy signed by TB!)
    4. Earthshock
    5. Caves of Androzani
    6. Vengeance on Varos
    7. Tomb of the Cybermen
    8. Inferno
    9. The Edge of Destruction
    10. The Happiness Patrol (despite the appalling execution, I love the story)
    Peace.

    Oh i watched The Greatest Show in The Galaxy again not that long ago and its fucking incredible and i say it with "The Curse of Fenric" being my all time favourite Who story. At the start its like "oh god, Season 24 all over again..." and then it starts to flesh out the story and characters that at first seemed one dimensional. My favourite part is Captain Cook manipulating everyone in different ways into taking his spot in the arena.

    6:27 - Thank Christ indeed: Reading the caption "Zoe, wearing a shimmering skintight body suit, is mounted atop the slowly rotating Tardis console - her pert arse thrust into the air" may have been enough to persuade me to trek to Nigeria personally to track down a lost copy...

    Despite it not mattering, I totally agree with five of your choices, but I can see why you chose the others. Choosing the partially lost episodes may be a bit of wishful thinking, but we can only hope to find out for sure at some point

    So the baddie of tgsitg was Eric Saward basically?
    So in your top 10 you have 3 2nd dr, 3 7th dr, 2 1st dr, and one each from 3 and 4. Pretty unusual most top tens have mostly 4th doctor.

    Interestingly it's fairly obvious that you have chosen these on the basis of watching/listening to the classic series, rather than watching them at the time.

    You said season 26 was the most consistent in Old Who.
    Just curious, what do you think is the most consistent series of New Who?

    • @colinmcphan
      @colinmcphan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would have to say a couple of Tom Baker's seasons were more consistent even then season 26 (Which was pretty good).

      I think Series 1 is the most perfect in terms of story and character arcs and consistent quality
