Unbelievable bow drill skills. Amazing that you could light the fire with the first try. Nice trick to twist the root to make it more pliable. I need to try that!!

Tom, that bow drill demonstration was unmatched to anything I've seen before. Great tips there for sure. I know how difficult it is to make a friction fire in moist humid environments.

Yeah, im on a mission to make that work. The location was not great for that, but in a calmer bay I think it should work great. People use modern ones all the time and they work great.
great tip about testing with the lips. I have done the same thing to determine what certain things are made of. If its cold its usually metal or ceramic. if not its usually plastic. Thumbs up for the info it makes sense.
Thanks! I had a blast. Gonna try to post more often.

Heck Yeah love this video and that your posting these again :) also very much apreciate the sponsor, very direct and the fact that it doesnt switch to a harsh post edited video full of screenshots keep it up . sponsors are a great way of keeping channels like this thriving .
I think it's awesome that you show a non optimal situation. Most survival channels just give up and upload one that fits the expectations of a perfect survivalist.
Exactly, they choose a place with plenty of wild food growing, full of animals to hunt, bring a weapon for hunting and choose a day with rain so they can get fresh water right away, they basically just make the only objective to be to build a shelter and wait around for a few days and call it a survival challenge
Really pleased to see new content. I'm certain that I first saw a video from you when you were in a midwestern woodland. Very delighted to have caught content regarding wildlands closer to me.
Outstanding Tom, really appreciate this, having wild camped through tbe PNW back in the late 1980s (BC, Washington and Oregon). Keep up the good work, Nigel, Scotland.
Very cool. I always like seeing the whole "only natural materials" approach, always interesting even if I will never use it myself. Would have liked to see what you did with the inside of the hut or if you just slept on the ground. Other than that, I enjoyed it.
I’ve only watched one of your videos but I’m pacing myself to watch another, because I know I’ll blast through them all in a day if I don’t… But this videos an exception 😂

It sure wouldn’t hurt my feelings any if we had that much rainfall in my neck of the woods. Where most love sunny days. Give me a gloomy severe thunderstorm (the more severe the better) now that’s my idea of a beautiful day,or night.
Great video, Tom -- loved the detailed explanations of all the tasks necessary for a 6-day survival experience. Its definitely one to watch a few more times. I'm curious about the open fire in your shelter. Is an opening in the top sufficient to keep smoke out?

What kind of blade is that? Almost looks like a blocky Kukri. I love it. It looks much safer than a hatchet. I like my hatchet, but I’m always hyper-aware of the risk of accidentally hurting myself with it. Sometimes, I avoid using it altogether, maybe out of irrational fear, but I just never feel fully at ease with it.
Hi Tom! This is Alex form the March Panama trip! Rabbit eats grass ;) Does the the racoon on the video not worry about the water bacteria because it has a stronger/more adopted stomach? Just makes me think humans are so vulnerable out in the nature and need so much "technology" to survive. Love the video, very informative, and great to see you thriving in this forest :)
Hey Alex! How’s life? I think that yes, their systems are better at eating bacteria laden foods and water. Humans have much less stomach acid than other mammals. I’m not sure if they can get paralytic shellfish poisoning from bivalves though but I would guess not.
Life's good, though I miss being out in the nature and the UK weather has me wanting for another getaway soon. Nothing really compares to the island experience so far :) Ah right that makes sense, I suppose once you get good at making the bowl and fire for boiling water you don't worry about it as much? Watching this, I was reflecting that would be my primary concern - as in no fire no safe water to drink

How was this a non optimal situation. A far more realistic scenario would be to MAYBE have a knife and nothing else.
