Strictly (to use a term from another O'Brien snippet today) there is very little Norman blood in the English, let alone British, gene pool. The Normans were were just Vikings who had settled in North-Western France anyway.
Incidentally if ever 'debating' with a Brexiteer and they start talking about 'our' culture just start talking about history, genes, and ask them how much they enjoy Northumbrian pipe music. Then watch their eyes glaze over and face turn an alarming shade of purple.

The whole saga over the weekend was objectively funny. He made such a show of returning to the country from his Caribbean holiday in economy class. Paraded in front of the press with his backside hanging out. Set up a fake photo shoot in an obviously empty office to prove he was doing the hard work of, erm, phoning his mates. Sent out his minions to tell everyone that he DEFINITELY had the votes, presumably in an effort to force some MPs to jump on the bandwagon. Then in his concession statement blamed the other two candidates for not working with him, even though he DEFINITELY had the votes.

That war was only ever about oil and I’m pretty sure that all political parties voted for the conflict. Your list of transgressions by labour as you see it pales into insignificance behind the decisions and behaviour of this government over that last 10 years. Do you really want a list of the transgressions by the trickle down party I don’t think so as you would not finish that particular novel until the new year. Please look in the mirror and see that doubling down and defending the indefensible and using whataboutery narratives is unhealthy. The country needs to move on with a general election and let the government and opposition parties stand and fall by the decision of the electorate. Many of us have had to live with that for the last six years. Just saying 🤷‍♂️

As an Irish citizen and proud member of the European Union that has done wonders for my little country, I respectfully suggest that if the UK eventually realises the economic harm Brexit has done to UK trade productivity and inward investment, the acid test will be sticking to its word on the NIP agreement with the EU as a prerequisite to any talks with the EU on easier trade terms. BUT Minister for State for Northern Ireland and leading light in the ERG has made it abundantly clear on Sky this morning that he supports Mr Sunak over Johnson , but will not hesitate to bring down the Sunak premiership if there is any weakening of the UK NIP bill progressing through both houses and the UK government's support for the DUP position. I fear Mr Sunak is 'hobbled' on Northern Ireland and by default European trade before he gets to No.10 unless the Conservative Party face down the ERG and similar groupings in its midst. Looking on as an interested outsider while Labour would not seek to reverse Brexit, (and anyway there is probably little appetite in Paris or Berlin to entertain a UK reapplication) it would not be as beholden to the DUP as the Conservatives are so are more likely to stick to former PM Johnson's agreement with the EU on the NIP than Johnson and the right wing of the Conservatives are.
Seems to me that there can be no improvement in trade relations with the EU until the Conservatives face down the ERG etc or Labour /Lib Dems come to power.
