  • Visit the now closed George - Knysna branch line during 2001 and 2002. The line was mostly steam worked, with the morning and afternoon goods trains featuring a 19D or 24, plus of course all of teh passenger trains during the day. This video covers different parts of the line from the train and the lineside, with goods and passenger workings, including a couple of shots of the famous Kaaimans River bridge.

Wonderful video. Wish it had been running when I was there in 2018.

Have just caught up with this fantastic, comprehensive coverage. It brings back so many memories, both of riding and chasing in 1991 and 1992. Thanks for this.

Great stuff! Wish I had taken that train when I was living in Cape Town back in 1984. But I did get to enjoy The Pride of Africa in 2011. Wonderful South Africa scenery.

Yes Rovos Rail is quite an experience. That Knysna line was one of the most beautiful trips I have done. Such a pity it is still closed.

A superb vid ! I was on the ( i think ) choo tjoe from Knysna to George and back in december 2002 which was , alas , diesel hauled ! Thanks especially for the clip of the Garrett - i had no idea that they were still running !

Fantastic Trevor ! I bought a video from some outfit or other in S.A & it was a waste of money. Lousy camera work & editing & the darn cameraman had never heard of a tripod or Steadycam & frequently fell over his feet ! Thank Heaven you know how to do a decent video. Am very impressed by all your work. I am a retired TV sound & camera technician who left South Africa in 1956. I love S.A.R. locos. Noel Tyler

Absolutely superb Trevor!!! We rode on one of the last few steam trips up to George on a rainy day (they almost did not run the steam) but it was the last day in Knysna and then we were flying back to the UK. Step-brother used to live there and when we went down I always asked to go on the train and my father always said next time but it never happened. I had a bad feeling about the line just before we left & I said we have to go on it this time whatever happens or I'll regret it. Flood.

Do you recall what number the loco with the blue livery was at all Trevor? I have it on film at George early one morning in 2001. About 5am coming into the station

    • @steamfreak

It was 19D 2749. Formerly "The Blue Bull" ex Pretoria.

I think it is still in storage at Voorbaai. It was repainted into standard black livery in the early 2000's I think.
