I have loved the mandolin ever since my dad brought Mac Wiseman into my life as a child. My son just gave me my first! He told me it's the only thing he ever hear me say, that I have ever wanted. What a son!! I do not play any instruments but I am so excited to begin! Thank You!!

So I just found my grandpa's dusty old mandolin, and I'm so excited to start playing it. Just gotta replace some old stings, and shine it up a little bit and it should be good to go. I've never tried a mandolin before, but the sound of it is so fascinating and beautiful to me. But anyway, this video was very helpful for a newb like myself! Great job, and thank you :-)

Wow! After playing piano for 40 years I have decided to learn other instruments and I chose the mandolin to learn because it is a smaller instrument. I am excited about learning to play. This tutorial was awesome. Thank you for sharing.

How much pressure are you putting on the frets to make a chord? I am new to Mandolin and i like the newer music you play. I have a new Mandolin which the strings are in tune but to play a C chord to get it to register on a tuner you have to be on top of the fret and pushed all the way down. It is not relaxed. What am I doing wrong?
the closer you are to the fret the less pressure you should have to put down.... If you are starting out too you may find playing on 4 strings (like electric mandolin) instead of the full 8 may require less pressure too ;)

Dude look up Steve n seagulls hear on TH-cam they call themselves fiinish hill billies with banjo mandolins guitars and accordion the take old heavy metal songs and turn them into amazing bluegrass songs
in tab GDAE I like a first fret barre.... in tab 1134 ;) Whatever note you play on the E string is what chord it is with that shape..... 2245 = A, 3356 = Bb/A# //// 4467 = B which I use for B7 quite regularly.... any Dom7 chord (G7/A7/B7/D7) can be simplified as a Major (G/A/B/D) hope that helps ;)

Questions .I just bought a Seagull Mandolin.Paid about 250.00 for it.Do you feel a Seagull is a good Mandolin and 1 more question.If I'm playing on the second string on the third fret does it make a difference if while holding my ring finger on the fourth fret while I move my index finger back and forth on the 1st and 3,rd fret while kinda strumming with my small finger if I move my middle finger to the second string at the same time as my ring finger moves back and forth on the 1,st and 3rd fret.Or should I just hold down my ring finger and then move my pointer.. finger up and down on the 1st and 3rd fret..I know you know a lot about the Mandolin simply by watching you play it so I figured I could clear this whole thing up.I've been debating this thing for months now.Thanks for your time.
When I was in school for music once you got one fingering you'd try it a different way to see what it feels like.... might depend on the size of your fingers what works.... like for me on Em I sometimes will use one finger to cover four strings (the d on 2nd fret and the A on 2nd fret ) I would suggest trying it different ways... sometimes C feels good with 1 and 2... sometimes with 3 and 2... sometimes it just depends on where you're coming from and where you're going.... experiment... play around with the head angle too.. sometimes how high the neck is can change what a chord feels like under the fingers ;) Love the seagull instruments I've played so I imagine that it would be a good instrument to start out on for sure... ;) Happy New Year! This honestly didn't help me at all. I understand music very well, because I a trumpet player, but I was very confused. Also, I felt it went a little fast, because I have small hands and I was working on trying to push down where I needed to get a major chord when you were on into scales. But I really want to learn.
Maybe try pausing the video when you get to something you want to practice so you don't feel rushed.... its a crash course so I intended to cram a lot of info into a little video... but that doesn't mean it should necessarily be played along staight to it... pause it to get something down for sure ;)

Hey, love the practice ideas- but please realize that you labeled this as beginning lessons and how quickly you say "second finger on the a fourth fret a" is not helpful for someone starting out, I have to pause the video every time you explain something like that. I'd love to watch more of your videos but can't handle pausing every 3 seconds due to you talking too quickly
The only thing I almost assume is you know the open strings...Wait...no i cover that in this video too... but there are also diagrams and tab in this video if I remember so you don't have to follow my voice to find the shape from the diagram... sorry but you may try pausing the video if i go too fast at points too... I have loved the mandolin ever since my dad brought Mac Wiseman into my life as a child. My son just gave me my first! He told me it's the only thing he ever hear me say, that I have ever wanted. What a son!! I do not play any instruments but I am so excited to begin! Thank You!!

So I just found my grandpa's dusty old mandolin, and I'm so excited to start playing it. Just gotta replace some old stings, and shine it up a little bit and it should be good to go. I've never tried a mandolin before, but the sound of it is so fascinating and beautiful to me. But anyway, this video was very helpful for a newb like myself! Great job, and thank you :-)

Wow! After playing piano for 40 years I have decided to learn other instruments and I chose the mandolin to learn because it is a smaller instrument. I am excited about learning to play. This tutorial was awesome. Thank you for sharing.

Mack Campbell I know it's been 2 years since you posted this. I started on guitar, self taught bass, and just bought a mandolin.... the one instrument I tried to play but couldn't was violin....

How much pressure are you putting on the frets to make a chord? I am new to Mandolin and i like the newer music you play. I have a new Mandolin which the strings are in tune but to play a C chord to get it to register on a tuner you have to be on top of the fret and pushed all the way down. It is not relaxed. What am I doing wrong?
the closer you are to the fret the less pressure you should have to put down.... If you are starting out too you may find playing on 4 strings (like electric mandolin) instead of the full 8 may require less pressure too ;)
hey big man I'm used to using heavy pick the tortex 1.35 on guitar do you have pick preference on the mandolin

How to form a g sharp chord please?
in tab GDAE I like a first fret barre.... in tab 1134 ;) Whatever note you play on the E string is what chord it is with that shape..... 2245 = A, 3356 = Bb/A# //// 4467 = B which I use for B7 quite regularly.... any Dom7 chord (G7/A7/B7/D7) can be simplified as a Major (G/A/B/D) hope that helps ;)

Questions .I just bought a Seagull Mandolin.Paid about 250.00 for it.Do you feel a Seagull is a good Mandolin and 1 more question.If I'm playing on the second string on the third fret does it make a difference if while holding my ring finger on the fourth fret while I move my index finger back and forth on the 1st and 3,rd fret while kinda strumming with my small finger if I move my middle finger to the second string at the same time as my ring finger moves back and forth on the 1,st and 3rd fret.Or should I just hold down my ring finger and then move my pointer.. finger up and down on the 1st and 3rd fret..I know you know a lot about the Mandolin simply by watching you play it so I figured I could clear this whole thing up.I've been debating this thing for months now.Thanks for your time.
When I was in school for music once you got one fingering you'd try it a different way to see what it feels like.... might depend on the size of your fingers what works.... like for me on Em I sometimes will use one finger to cover four strings (the d on 2nd fret and the A on 2nd fret ) I would suggest trying it different ways... sometimes C feels good with 1 and 2... sometimes with 3 and 2... sometimes it just depends on where you're coming from and where you're going.... experiment... play around with the head angle too.. sometimes how high the neck is can change what a chord feels like under the fingers ;) Love the seagull instruments I've played so I imagine that it would be a good instrument to start out on for sure... ;) Happy New Year! This honestly didn't help me at all. I understand music very well, because I a trumpet player, but I was very confused. Also, I felt it went a little fast, because I have small hands and I was working on trying to push down where I needed to get a major chord when you were on into scales. But I really want to learn.
Maybe try pausing the video when you get to something you want to practice so you don't feel rushed.... its a crash course so I intended to cram a lot of info into a little video... but that doesn't mean it should necessarily be played along staight to it... pause it to get something down for sure ;)

Hey, love the practice ideas- but please realize that you labeled this as beginning lessons and how quickly you say "second finger on the a fourth fret a" is not helpful for someone starting out, I have to pause the video every time you explain something like that. I'd love to watch more of your videos but can't handle pausing every 3 seconds due to you talking too quickly
The only thing I almost assume is you know the open strings...Wait...no i cover that in this video too... but there are also diagrams and tab in this video if I remember so you don't have to follow my voice to find the shape from the diagram... sorry but you may try pausing the video if i go too fast at points too...
