Oh C'mon. The video is intended to demonstrate 3 rhythms. I play each of the three rhythms along with a (pre-recorded) melody track of Whiskey Before Breakfast. The idea is to show how the rhythm style can dramatically change the feel of a tune even if the melody is played the same all three times. I never would have thought anyone would think that I was playing both melody and accompaniment at the same time. ..........Not quite sure how you go about that on this tune.
Getting ready to buy my first mandolin so im doing as much research as i can before i buy one, thanks for the video, im sure i'll watch it many times 👍🇺🇸.
Thank you Don.........as a guitar player that is new to th mandolin, this is a great breakdown of 3 basic rhythms. Santa is bringing me your new book, and I will start lessons online with Mike Marshall. You rock!
Excellent!!... You mentioned in answer to a comment/question, that the 'melody' is pre-recorded... I mainly play Folk & Blues on the guitar, but to a lesser degree on the mandolin. When (trying to) explain to other musician friends what I 'do', i find it hard! :-) Of course there is basic chord playing, as well as purely melody playing, but I play a combination of both at the same time ! While playing PARTS of chords, I intermix it with playing most of the MELODY at the same time, when holding mostly various chord SHAPES with the left hand, while picking the melody too. So the left hand doesn't have to 'hunt' all over the place to finger the 'scale' notes... Notes or chords are then always available for the choosing. I don't know what to call it though !! :-)
Love this lesson. Don't want to be a hillbilly player. I've played it 96,000 out of 97,608 plays so as to get the right feel and get the chords down. Thanks.
Good lesson. The bluegrass barn dances are parallel to hornpipes, however, the timing differences, although tiny, make a huge difference in how they are interpreted and so how they sound. It is good to have several approaches in the tool box.
Thanks Don for the variety, after all it is the spice of life. The two finger chords are also a great addition to any mandolinists aresenal, especially the ones in part three. I use them alot in blues and rock as they are good starting points for pentatonic runs and fills. And who cares about the BG police, cause they also work wonderfully in bluegrass. Thanks again and keep up the good work. hippo1948 13 hours ago
very interessing vidéo. it s hard to go out of the basic chop chord & rhythm when you play bluegrass or American tunes and you show very good example for accompagning in other way.
Awesome rhythm tutorial! Here is a video of me playing this tune on the fiddle in the style of Andy de Jarlis, with a link to the lesson: Whiskey Before Breakfast
Top quality info. Just difficult though, in that usual mandolin way. Chubby fingers on the very narrow neck...just can't quite make those unique chords out
Howdy Don I have a question due ya and I do believe it’s a question that a lot of new mAndolin players including me struggles with, it’s the ole boomchuck chop technique, for me it’s only the fast bluegrass songs, I find myself strumming the chop on the onbeats instead of the offbeat sound u hear mAndolin players using on slower to medium paced tracks
My mandolin doesn't sound nearly as bright and thin as his, mine sounds dark, warm and gets real muddy in a way that a folk-punk like myself really likes.
I have a rouge, it's the best shitty mandolin you'll ever have, you'll love it, just gotta put in a little work to get it really playable but that's no biggie. I love mine, never done me wrong. Keep in mind though it's frets are a tad iffy so expect that.
And, he tunes his mandolin really different than me. I'm no mandolin god. But, I'm not inventing the wheel. No matter how you tune, he is still right on.
i know this is a joke but some people may take it seriously... the video is about rhythms not the melody (which you can also check out for practising some pickin')
Abigail this is a lesson in RHYTHM playing. I am demonstrating three different ways of playing RHYTHM for a specific melody. The melody is pre-recorded. It is intended to simulate playing with other people. After all, the time that you play RHYTHM is when someone is singing or someone else is playing the melody. Playing the RHYTHM on it's own would not give you any context to how or where to use it. Sorry for the confusion.
I discovered the Mandolin five minutes ago and I'm in love with it.
I've had a mandolin for 16 years and I never knew I could make it sound like this XD
You bet I'm starting practicing right now.
How’s it been going?
I have a really old (probably 20 something year old) a- style mandolin that my grandpa gave me when I was 5 to play with before he passed.
I have no idea how to play it, but I just tuned it and I’m going to try it out😂

lol. That's me too.
LOL
Glad to see I'm not alone.
Me Too. I have three guitars, a banjo, a fiddle and a didgeridoo and now a mandolin which I will attempt to play very poorly as well.
I've never vibed with a comment to the degree of intensity that I vibe with this

I've recently started to learn how to play the mandolin for when I go traveling by foot to busk I'm quite excited
Where are you leaving from? I am going to do something similar.
Edmonton

How do you tune your mandolin? I'm baffled. Can't get nowhere even in recemblece with standard tuning. Love this, keep posting!

My mandolin doesn't sound nearly as bright and thin as his, mine sounds dark, warm and gets real muddy in a way that a folk-punk like myself really likes.
