    Yes I can relate to the chord shapes. I was looking the other week and I was really surprised how much you can carry over from acoustic guitar to mandolin and also banjo. I'm thinking of buying birth and mandolin and a banjo

      @@jemmermusic Thanks! Shall try next week. There is one used instrument with 4 times 3 strings in a music shop which closed down. Either take that or order a new one in Germany. Can you recommend one for a beginner? I play already different string instruments as beginner and began also with violin which has same names of the strings like Mandoline and that may help. Also have guitars with 6 and 12 Strings and Ukuleles. so it should not too difficult to learn Mandoline. Greetings from Germany

      I've never used a Fishman for mandolin... I recommend a K&K Mandolin Twin + an LR Baggs Venue DI... you will get great, useable tone, in every venue, every time. You've got to learn to use the DI/EQ though. Blending it with a mic whenever possible is also good, but the K&K does a decent job on it's own.

    Hello Jackson! Thank you for this video! I subscribed to you. I play piano, guitar, and ukulele. I have yet to buy my first Mandolin. Do you have a few suggestions for a first one? I like the f style but want to stick to at or under $100 for my beginner. I appreciate any guidance you have.

    • @jemmermusic
      @jemmermusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Raeley, thanks for watching my videos. Buying a beginner mandolin for $100 can be done, but it's not usually a great idea... Mandolins aren't as popular as guitars, and thus, it costs more to produce each one because they're not built to the same production scale as guitars. A $100 guitar can be ok, and will last several years. A $100 mandolin is generally unplayable, won't stay in tune, and will make for an unpleasant experience as a beginner. If you can find a used mandolin for $300-500, I think you'll be better off. It will play better (lower action, better tone, hold a tune), and it will hold it's value, so if you ever decide to re-sell it, you're more likely to get your money back. Sweetwater has mandolins like this Epiphone for $200-ish, but I wouldn't recommend them. 5-10 years ago, these mandolins cost $80-100 and they weren't great. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EF30ASGH--epiphone-mm-30s. - - Maybe look for something like this: www.mandolincafe.com/ads/191067#191067 - - - - or this: www.elderly.com/products/the-loar-honey-creek-f-style-mandolin?variant=26856112029760¤cy=USD&gclid=Cj0KCQjw852XBhC6ARIsAJsFPN1T5i27aq9UOvSwqDF6_betETAZSDoo05SfBQDkT_vLQxyQiY6ajDwaAo16EALw_wcB - - Good luck! Have fun playing.

    Do you mute the pair of E strings together or just the thicker E string when you play the C chord?

    • @manipularsilver
      @manipularsilver 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've probably figured it out by now, but if anyone else is wondering, you'd mute both. He's referring to the doublets of strings as a single string, as they're the same note in the same octave on a mandolin.

    Why mute the E string when playing a C chord? E is the major 3rd of Cmajor

    • @jemmermusic
      @jemmermusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Klaas, yes, E is the major 3rd of C and it could work in the chord. It just depends on the inversion you want to play. They each have a different sonic flavor. It's just a matter of preference. Have fun playing!

    I cannot for the life of me play the D chord with my pointer finger and middle, I typically have to use middle and ring. I also have issues with accidentally muting strings, which may come from my bassist background where the hand is walking around the fretboard and accidental muting of other strings is usually fine.

    • @jemmermusic
      @jemmermusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy HaffTonne. Playing the mandolin usually requires a different hand/wrist angle than guitar or bass. Take a look at this video, and skip to 1:55 for the info about hand angle. The slight shift in angle changes how your fingers approach the frets, and can help them stay out of the way of open strings. Have fun. th-cam.com/video/7WGc5F4XtQU/w-d-xo.html
