If your meter causes damage, then the party causing the damage is the responsible party , sue them for causing the harm, let a jury decide.

“The requirement of standing, however, has a core component derived directly from the Constitution. A plaintiff must allege personal injury fairly traceable to the defendant's allegedly unlawful conduct and likely to be redressed by the requested relief. 454 U.S. at GO>472.”,and ” The "case or controversy" requirement of Art. III of the Constitution defines with respect to the Judicial Branch the idea of separation of powers on which the Federal Government is founded, and the Art. III [468 U.S. 738] doctrine of "standing" has a core constitutional component that a plaintiff must allege personal injury fairly traceable to the defendant's allegedly unlawful conduct and likely to be redressed by the requested relief. The concepts of standing doctrine present questions that must be answered by reference to the Art. So...if your house catches fire and you didn't start it, then you would be interested in holding whoever you believe is responsible accountable.

you saying sue them is spot on but your reasons are wrong...

    • @immafreemann

The meters are not UL approved (so there is no gaurantee of safety), and Syc : you can use your words and state reasons of your own if you wish. The damages are the house damage (contractor estimates) and the fire department should do an assessment and name the cause of the fire, if they refuse you have conspiracy to aid and abet the harm done to you by the fire department if they cant certify a cause of fire.

If the electric company installed a faulty meter that in turn caused damage, they are responsible for the damage caused by their equipment.

      ike fun
Incoming wiring? Like what they said the power company also owns?
Regardless, the fire appears to have started in the meter. If the wiring is at fault, it would be due to a poor install.... by the power company.

The guy specifically, and correctly, stated that the power company DOES NOT own anything but the actual meter itself. Go watch the video again. Also, IMO it clearly looks like the problem occurred in the terminal section of the meter pan. If you don't know what this is maybe go ask a real electrician.

Sorry bud, not true. These meters are linked to so many fires and have been caught on video as the source. A fire investigator can tell where point of origin is. I, as an electronics tech, can tell just by the design these devices are barely able to carry the amperage that is delivered to the home. Poorly constructed devices all in the name of being able to remotely monitor and disconnect.

    • @kriswingert1662
      @kriswingert1662 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

P Anon: The overload at the poorly built terminals trying to carry the amperage delivered to it and across it is the very failure that caused the fire. The materials used in construction of the device is at fault. Older meters are constructed of a thick, Bakelite material that tolerates higher temps and will not melt under high amperage loads. I am an electronics tech of 30 years.

The fire started in the customer owned base. The meter was actually a casualty of the customers equipment failure NOT the cause of a fire. This happened long before “smart meters” were invented. The problem may occur after the utility changes the meter because the customer owned base was in poor shape and a weak connection got worse from being disturbed. People will say “everything was fine until they changed the meter” but ultimately the customer has to provide a place for the utility to install their meter and it has to be in good enough condition to stand up to carrying the electric load and the utility changing the meter.

My local power company tried to install that smart meter on my home without my consent. I came home one day from work an caught them in my yard trying to install it. I asked them what were they doing an then told them that they had to put my meter back. Then I told them that they had 5 minutes to do so or I'd come back with my bat. They sent 2 cops an another worker out to my house an said they have to either install a smart meter or they will shut my power off. Well I still have my old meter an my power is still on. In my town 4 houses already burned down to the smart meters an I'm sorry but I like my house just the way it is

So Jason Sauls, not happy with Hydro One? Make sure the news agencies work on this story.
      *ARSON ALERT* *ARSON ALERT*
*HYDRO ONE IS IN TROUBLE WITH CANADIAN LAW AND CRIMINAL LAW*
CityNews TV, this story is huge. *BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIR COSTS TO HYDRO ONE TO FIX THEIR MISTAKE*
This is how HYDRO ONE is responsible for every smart meter fire and damages caused by their criminal act.
This is how HYDRO ONE has caused every CSA APPROVED METER BASE IN ONTARIO TO BE DECERTIFIED.
*So you are asking why would Hydro One do this and put 100% of their customers lives at risk?*
      *THEY DID IT FOR PROFIT*
And they had to work fast to remove all of the safe glass meters and destroy them so there was NO WAY TO RETURN back into service.
Let look at just what Hydro One did wrong.
Here it is, In Canada you are not allowed to use the power meter as a load-breaking device.
“CSA C22.2 NO. 115-14 1.5 says “Meter-mounting devices, as covered by this Standard, are not intended to be used as load-making or load-breaking devices.”, meaning that electricity must be disconnected or turned off during meter exchanges. Aside from the obvious concern about the arcing and consequent pitting which occurs when contacts are made or broken under load, another concern is that one's meter base could lose its CSA certification if it’s been used as a load-break device.”
The proper method is to BYPASS the meter with jumper wires or turn off the power from the power pole.
*IF THIS METHOD IS NOT USED, THE HYDRO ONE HAS CAUSED THE DESERTIFICATION OF THE HOMEOWNERS METER BASE*
So CityTV Toronto, if this story works, I can show you how Hydro One is MURDERING thier customer for a *PROFIT*

this is how i feel about it....His system was working just fine before the meter upgrade. if the system on the house is older and the system on the house is the homeowners property and responsibility the power company should have been required to get permission before upgrading the meter. obviously somthing was connected improperly or was not compatible. so in my opion it is 100% the responsibility of the power company to replace what has been damaged. this could have caused this person and his family to lose everything they had.

It's why I refused to get one.
They told a lot of lies trying to convince me to get one, and that I would have to.
Twice they stood in my driveway lying to me.
The second time, after 3 hours, my neighbor who got one, came over to complain to them that his bill had gone up.
After lying to me that they weren't invasive, not a little, a lot, he turns to my neighbor and says, "Maybe you have a leak. That's what's so great about them. We can look and it will tell us where it is....", his voice trails off as he realizes he just admitted it sees past the wall. Caught up in the moment of actually being allowed to tell the truth..
If you accept one, you no longer have an expectation of privacy in your home.
The govt told you needed a door frame, that is left wide open so they can come in anytime they want...and you allowed it. You have no defense.
I have a generator and live in a place where there is no noise by-law, so if they ever try to force it, and I think they will try, as it isn't just about hydro, they want access to your :smart, (only smarter than the consumer who buys them), devices.
      I use no wireless.
No cellphones. Even blessed with the fact you can't get a cell phone signal in my house.
      I only buy "dumb" products.
It's funny, I had never heard of a hydro meter catching fire or being the blame of the start of a fire, before they put smart, (only smarter than those that accept them), meters in.
So I did a Google search for any examples.
"No results found for "mechanical electricity meter found to have caused fire"."
You get lots if you take off the quotation marks, but they are all about "smart meters" causing fires...and there's lots of them.
When it comes to this topic, I find a lot of people trying to sell bovine excrement.
If it isn't in my knowledge base already, I research it. I tend not to give much validity to anecdotal stories, without something to back them up.
They tend to be without substance.
If you weren't the top comment, you wouldn't have these trolls. Go down to someone who said they same thing, who has no votes, and see their reply comments there.
      Oh, they don't have any.
A neat little documentary was done. If it doesn't urge you to fight them, or worse, you still want anything to do with them, or even worse than that, defend them, you are likely so ideologically sold out you are useless to anyone, or your pocket book and livelyhood are linked to selling that same, bovine excrement.

the box has literally zero affect on the meter. It's just a shell. Have you ever taken a smart meter off before? There's nothing in the box except for 2 metal prongs that the meter clips into. The meter caught fire because it was trash or the power company sent a massive power spike to it.

  • @PosiP
    @PosiP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +124

When the new meter was installed, the installer didn't use the anti-oxidant past as required. The new meter uses aluminum connectors, the old cable in the building is copper. The 2 metals expand & contracts at different rates. They conduct electricity differently. The antioxidant past is used to ensure a good connection between the different metals. If not used, arcing can occur and could cause an electrical fire. And the comment about the age of the cabling. 30-years is not old for electrical. The cable used back then was better than the cable I can buy today. Cable is copper and copper cost money. The new cable is a copper mix that sucks. Take them to court and make they pay for lieing to you and pay for the repair too.

as the temperature changes and metal changes size, it's expected expansion and contraction rate changes for each type of metal. Maybe this is the reason the post you connect it to in the box is an aloe a pure copper. this could cause arcing and could cause a fire like this one, don't you think? I have seen this is real life

    • @x.y.8581
      @x.y.8581 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think the problem may be that aluminum oxidizes (corrodes) which impedes current flow while copper does not rather than any difference in expansion rates. Also the newer meters have plastic components that burn - old meters were metal and glass, both non-flammable.

This is a poor excuse for investigative journalism. They didn’t pursue the issue of WHY this homeowner had NO notification that the smart meter was incompatible with his older electrical equipment with the utility. The analog would not have caught on fire with the same equipment. They are obfuscating, and you let them.
It’s an outrage that the owner has to live with the potentially deadly consequences of something forced upon them, and an added insult that they are billed for it. It’s a further act of incredible negligence to put lives at risk by intentionally leaving homeowners in the dark as to the risks of new digital equipment on older setups when analog meters carry no such risk.
    Criminal, in my opinion.

I thought these fires were found to be in the contacts in the meter box itself. The contacts are damaged during the retrofit (or the terminals on the new meter are too thin) so there is insufficient spring tension causing hot spots at the contact interface and fire. I remember an incident where turning on the electric stove made all the lights in the house turn off. It was found to be a damaged (bent) contact from when the new meter was installed. Luckily it didn't catch fire for that person.

+ike fun you can't even see the wires there in case in the conduit. who ever replace the meter should be reliable to report to the owner of anything they may find wrong with the panel. the wires hanging down the edge of the house on the left are the pole wires and the electric company owns them. anything after the electrical box to the house is ever owned by the property owner. contractors that work for the power company are the only qualified people to do any type of maintenance on the box or the wires from the pole to your fuse box inside your house. at least in North America. Step 1 Repair the damage, note all expenses
Step 2 go to small claims file a claim to be re-immersed for damages due to faulty meter
Step 3 find independent source that shows meters have been faulty and cause damage
Step 4 Respond to all low ball offers to settle out of court with "No thank you, judges are smart"
Step 5 Wait for a settlement for the full amount of damages, accept them.
The reason why this works is the Judge will likely reward all damages to you and the Electric company will waste money on legal fees.

Yes! The homeowner needs to be advised that their equipment is not up to date, because the average homeowner has no clue about this. However, it should also be criminal for one of those undertrained contractors (hired by the utility co,) to install the new meters, when doing so would not be safe and could cause a house fire!

    • @EJ-oe4pg
      @EJ-oe4pg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is not a scam. We had a meter installed by contractors hired by our city power co . Things began to happen and when the meter was pulled, there were burns on the inside of the meter. The meter had been placed on old equipment that no one told us needed replacing, and the clamps were loose that hold the meter in place. Contractors had been hired to do the job. Luckily, no house fire for us. So, I am afraid you know not what you are talking about.

    • @EJ-oe4pg
      @EJ-oe4pg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The homeowner is responsible for everything except the meter, itself. Most homeowners have no clue regarding this. The person who changed out the meter should have told us that our equipment was stretched out, etc. There were arc burns inside the meter and the clamps were loose. They also install UNDER LOAD which is uber stupid. I do not believe they had the proper training to do this work. When we learned of the problem, our utility co. just told us that we needed to upgrade our equipment. They said nothing about the imbecile that installed the meter two years prior.

E J installing the meter is easy. Literally just plugs in. It requires no real training. However, if there is an issue with an air gap causing arching, the power company will always blame it on the homeowners equipment. I used to work as an electrician and many times had to replace the meter boxes because the meters were constructed improperly and the terminal spacing was wrong causing the arching. Had to go to court a couple times to testify about it too when homeowners sued the power companies to pay for the repairs.

While its true that the Meter Box, conduit and conductors are the homeowner's property the culprit of this fire came from the meter which means they are responsible. As an electrician if you are working on a system and see an issue you MUST STOP and inform the customer about the faulty or old equipment that can cause damage and or harm to someone and the Client needs to address these by either contracting you as the company to repair these by upgrading or replacing the items or contacting other sources. In this case the Electrical Company should have left the old meter and sent an information letter to the customer to upgrade their system. Thank God no one was hurt and the damage we see here will be less than 1.5k in parts and labor

A GOOD utility will inspect the socket to insure that the contacts will securely bind to the meter tabs. After my meter was changed last summer, two weeks later I lost one leg of my split phase 240V so half my house didn't have power. I knew exactly what the problem was and called Ameren to come out and have a look. Sure enough, one of the contacts was faulty. They put a temporary fix on it and I scheduled a new socket to be installed immediately. That stuff wears out after 40 years.
The meter wasn't the problem. The socket is always the problem, and the utility should have checked it first. Mine didn't, and neither did this guy's.

If the meter is where the first started and the meter is owned by the utility company, then the utility company is responsible. If the box, however, started the fire then the homeowner is responsible. The chance that the box itself would cause or start a fire is next to impossible. With all of the reports saying that the utility companies own the meters and evidence that the meters are where these fires begin that is enough evidence to hold the utility company responsible for the bill.

I had a meter that was installed by some untrained kids who did not properly mount the meter right which lead to arcing on the contacts on high load which killed our power intermittently ( EG: dryer, oven) We had assumed it was some faulty wiring and hired an electrician who thankfully charged minimal and did not find anything that would cause such a problem. The arcing got worse to the point that we would have intermittent power outages and dim lights in some rooms but full power in others. Finally my son came to me and mentioned he heard loud zaps coming from the other side of his wall where the meter was. We called out electrical company and had them come take a look and had found that the contacts had been arcing and was already starting to melt the plastic and burn things. Luckily for us we caught it just in time.

If the lawyer working for you says that it is your problem, then maybe it is. I honestly think this homeowner could sue and win. There is no conceivable way a meter should catch on fire period. The defective meter that belongs to the utility company caused damage to the home owners property. He should sue them, and make them pay for all the damages plus legal fees.

faulty meter, if connections are good.
Hope you seen the terminal at the meter
I was a electrician with Scottish power for 39 years,
I have seen this type of thing many times.
Fire normally starts at the cutout fuse which I suspect is inside the main box at the meter or the terminal block at the meter.
This has nothing to do with the service cable , which is normally the utility companies property or the customers if the cable was owned or ran by customer.
This service cable is always the utilities cable up to the meter and the customers leaving the meter to the switchboard.

To emphasize the point: if the house had burned down with your family in it, caused by a smart meter they installed, that you probably did not want, you would still get stuck paying for it. Is that correct?

My son had his main electrical panel upgraded with a new mast to the roof, etc. The electric company said that they would come out and remove the meter which they did for the work to begin and that they would return to lock and tag the meter when the work was done. That was many years ago and they never returned.

You do own everything but the meter. So lock the box that houses the meter and never let them put a smart meter. I keep mine locked and when they were around changing them my pit and Doberman never left the yard.

If they truly didn't install this meter and don't in fact own it, than yeah - they are not responsible for the damage. But if they lie and they did install equipment that is known to be faulty and cause fires - they should restore everything and stop being sneaky lying weasels!

It is against the law in Canada to attach a smart meter to a customer's meter if the meter base no longer meets CSA requirements.
Hydro One and the installers should also be charged with ATTEMPTED ARSON.

They Have tons of lawyers. They need to be investigated and be accountable for their actions. Corporations need to be accountable. Take their their homes and Yachts. Wake up call. What goes around comes around.

Did the home owner ask for a Smart meter to be fitted? But in any case the utility company has a duty to check whether the existing cables and consumer unit are safe to use with it? If they just fitted it without asking the homeowner then they are totally responsible.

That reporter deserves a good check being her own camera person as well. That camera was very steady.
Second there should be a law prohibiting "unsolicited" upgrades without a homeowner's approval.

Ok for 5000 you could go off grid with wind and solar and forget about being hooked on the grid and use gas for cooking and hot water

No fire until the smart meter installed. What do you think Watson ?

We just own the thing that burst into flames. We don’t own the flame. That’s the responsibility of the home owner.

Fires at the meter or the panel are 100 percent caused by a loose wire connection while drawing a load thru those connections

Did the installer bother to make sure that the connection was secure? Do they use whatever anti-oxident or dielectric grease that they are supposed to? Or are they not trained at all, and they do not even care about safety nor of doing a professional job?

That sucks! They should stop forcing those new smart meters if they know the equipment is old. I’d like to see a class action suit.

so the meter isw the cause of the fire.. which in turn damaged your house.. I'd be getting on the safety board to lay the blame on the power company, then take it to court with the proof and nail them to the wall .. like they try to do with you.
