It literally went rogue and even recorded massive usage when I turned off the main valve for a day. Eventually I got Scottish Power to admit it was faulty and they agreed to "reset" my bill - but only if I accepted a pair of smart meters being installed. These come with a very nice "guiltometer" which I switched off this winter.

It was replaced by the utility firm at the time with a standard non-smart 2-rate meter with a built in clock to switch rates at a fixed time, all year round. 23:36 - 06:36 GMT in my case (the clock is slightly off the normal timing for the deal). It evidently has a built in battery that feeds the clock (we've had a few power cuts that shows that). As long as meters like the one at my place are available, they can get round the loss of service from the old Droitwich transmitter as they did at my place.

The only items connected to the night rate mains were a couple of storage heaters which both died so I decided not to replace them and heat the flat on an 'as needed' basis instead. Everything else is on the daytime standard rate side of the consumer unit so the change makes no difference to me.

That „Radio signal“ claim is a load of rubbish. A friend received a letter to that effect, and he happens to have the same design of economy seven meter that I do. I placed a grounded shield around mine for a month and continued to monitor the E7 operation using a neon indicator on one of the E7 circuits, and it continued to work exactly as normal despite having no possibility of any radio reception inside that shielding. 📵
tl,dr: The „Radio signal“ from „The BBC“ is - In actual fact - A clock inside the meter itself. ⏱

On a similar note, I boosted my hot water for 30 minutes yesterday. While sitting in the room next to the boiler I noticed the boiler cut out exactly 33 minutes later. So a 30 minute boost became 33 minutes. Now I wonder if a genius grad wearing braces and red rim glasses is now sitting on a massive bonus and driving a new Porsche for his idea of adding 10% to his company's turnover?

My meter started and finished bang in time with the kettle. Maybe a two second lag at each end. But who's to say yours doesn't do something different? My take on this is that smart meters will enable the energy companies to supply, bill etc. every customer individually. Cheap or expensive rates for one house may be totally different for the house next door, even if it's supplied by the same company. That may not be happening yet, but the potential for abuse is built in to the system.

Anyone who thinks that they were introduced for our benefit doesn't understand how things work. The carrot was you can see how much energy you were using and save , despite having to pay for the £ 13 billion rollout . Now you are at the mercy of the government who can use dynamic pricing (although once it was denied), can remotely cut you off if the grid can't cope (think cold wind free days in winter) and can put you on a prepayment tariff if you fail to pay your bills. The cat is out of the bag. Keep your analogue meter.

They are obviously subsidising French consumers at our expense. Why can our MPs not see that EDF are taking the p155? All critical infastructure should be owned and operated by UK companies with an actual person as the CEO; an actual person that can be dragged into court when things go wrong. An investment portfolio cannot serve time.

Corbyn had the solution as he saw the problem years ago; Electricity, Gas and Water should all be in government hands and not ran for profit. These are things we all use and need for a daily life's and when you put that into the hands of corporations that's sole mission is to maximize profits you can guarantee prices will just keep going up until they can't squeeze us no more.

I've been on Octopus Agile for a couple of years now and have got SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper per-unit rates for that entire time: Last month, my average was 11.4p per kwh, less than half the standard Flexible rate!
The cheapest times are often during the day on a weekend, so not always in the middle of the night as you might expect (although this does happen often in the winter). Tomorrow, the prices will be slightly NEGATIVE between 10:30am and 4pm!
Peak times are usually only 5p more expensive than the Flexible rate, so not bank-breaking. It's common for prices outside peak time to be half the Flexible rate.
