- This week’s Urban Valor episode features retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant,
Robert Porter aka “Bar.”
Bar grew up in Albany, New York and was adopted as a child. He talks us through 21 years in the Marine Corps in occupations not limited to Military Police, criminal investigations, Drill Instructor, and Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival. Upon transitioning, Bar began helping out with Toys for Tots, which led to his festive transformation to Gunny Clause.

I joined Royal Marines basic training at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines February 1986 and had a USMC Gunnery Sgt on exchange on our training team.
He'd passed our All Arms Commando Course and wore our green beret with his EGA cap badge. I referred to him as 'the best of the best just got better'!
On our Kings Squad pass out (graduation) he wore snakeskin cowboy boots, real cool dude.
Also have a very long and close friendship with our Cloggie (Dutch) Marine brothers too through our shared love of motorcycles.

I was in MRP & PCP for a month. Those DIs were excellent. One of them ran with me almost every day, extending my stride, teaching me how to breathe better & motivating me. That guy was scary 24 hours a day. But i knew he wanted me to succeed because he screamed it at me in heavily accented english.
Gunny Porter is the real deal, best instructor I had in any course during my tenure.
My man describes getting out and getting the life guard job perfectly. I can relate my guy!!
I went to boot camp in ‘79 on an open contract and pulled 5811 as my MOS. Went to Ft. McMuffin to M.P. School and Lackland AFB for dog handlers school. After about 8 months of saluting vehicle decals at the Del Mar gate I requested mass three times and finally got myself transferred not only out of M.P duty, but out of the entire division. Wound up an 0311 with 1/8 and never looked back.

Brother, the VA has a branch called the Vet Center. It's purpose is to help us vets get the mental, and other help (free) we have earned. The Vet Center here in New Orleans has helped this old Viet Vet. Your local VA can help with some of your issues, but they can't get you back in, if that's what you really want.

We had a guy in Navy boot camp that had one of those Marlboro bags you could get free with points back in the 90's. One week from passing review we had a health and comfort and turns out he had been pooping himself for two months and stashing them in that bag. They booted him out after making it that far. I hope it worked out for him 25 years later.
Proud of the work he is doing. Very meaningful.

This man is absolutely scary smart. People make jokes about Marines being dumb. Some of the smartest people I have ever met have been Marines
I can remember TD 1(training day 1)on Parris Island(1/29/80)Plt 2011 and the 1st one I saw was the(BC) Battalion Commander(Lt Col and would later retire a full bird Col)who was a Medal of Honor recipiant(Vietnam 1965)and the Adjudent(Captain)who was stationed in Iraq(I was in the WV National Guard.)I got out of the USMC in 84,had a break in service 12 years)and Capt Clark the adjudent he was a 3-4 star General in Iraq and they just recently named a battle ship in Harvy in Barnums' name...Semper Fi Brothers!

I’m confused about his roommate be a corpsman from seal team one. That doesn’t jive in my brain
My older brother was in a car accident when he was in HS. He nearly died, he still has multiple scars and a limp. Later when I was in HS, a classmate named “Barr” and my nickname was “BAR”. Barr committed suicide and my friends heard the name and thought I’d committed suicide. During the phone conversations no one said any name, just “Your Brother”! Hence the confusion.
We both lived off base and were roommates. I wasn’t in the Navy or a SEAL.

What platoon during your DI tour gunny? Would’ve loved to hear the funniest thing you ever saw a recruit do. I know when I was a recruit there were times instructors were doing best to not laugh lol

I served with Bar at MP Co, 1st Marine Division from 1993-1996 at 33 Area, Camp Margarita. Home of the infamous “Margarita Monster”. I was in Okinawa when the two guys I knew passed away in that auto accident. Didn’t know what he did for one of them. Proud to know you Bar. Semper Fi!

Brother I’m sure you won’t see this but I need help from a vet. I joined the Infantry in the Army and my first duty station was camp Casey Korea. I was a teenager and did nothing but train and party. Mostly party. I shot Exocet and had 300 PT. Ruined my life from alcohol and my career was short.. I have a black hole inside me from not finishing my duty or going to a real combat. stop. The only way I can fulfill my duty is to reenlist. I need help getting back in and I’ll do absolutely do anything to do so
