I make about $2000 USD on Udemy. I would strongly advise against launching courses for free. It's the biggest thing I would say to new instructors. Free students usually don't watch the course and when they do they leave lower views. Both these behaviours damage the SEO of the course.
I really like your positive approach in making courses. I want to make a course about programming. I am an App Dev myself but can't get enough courage to start thinking whether someone is gonna watch or buy my course or not.

1. Not really, most of my clients still find me through Google and my website 2. Yes, you can sell your course on other platforms which is what I did 3. It does push your course down in the search over time unless it's performing very well.
I am starting to create my first course also now. When you did your course did you read from a script into the camera or just winging it? Is there a minimum amount to be able to cash out on Udemy Affiliate? I joined Amazon Affiliate and the minimum is 25€ and even though I have gotten some purchases, it is less than the minimum so it doesn't let me cash out :(

YEs, unfortunately you get no control over pricing on Udemy. Their entire business model depends on running regular sales.
