  • A turning point for Thailand or will the military-backed elites quickly call time on reform? High turnout in Sunday’s general election delivering an unprecedented result with Pita Limjaroenrat’s Move Forward party topping the populist Pheu Thai of Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the pair blowing away the United Thai National Party of the outgoing prime minister, former coup leader Prayuth Chen-Ocha.

    As a Thai political science student, this is by far the best analysis a foreign media has ever given on this Thai election. Thank you!!
    P.S. after watching toward the end, this is literally the BEST analysis out there - even better than the one from Thai media (probably because they are allowed to talk about the monarchy).

  • @benwalkers
    @benwalkers ปีที่แล้ว +104

    Good debate. I think when Pita stepped up and made his victorious speech saying he’s the next prime minister. He just sent the signal to all of his opponents as well as his supporters that if he were not somehow get to the job, it could have been from an “unnatural” power. He simply leveraged his support to put the pressure back on his opponents. If he’s not the next prime minister, whoever responsible for that would have become the enemy of his “fandoms”. One good thing about the guy is that he’s not shy when it comes to display his determination which is rare for a young Thai. And I believe with that quality of his, Thais voted for him.

    • @nzimalaya2011
      @nzimalaya2011 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well it was more of discussion than a debate Id say, since everyone seemed to be of the same notion, I really hope Thailand sees a peaceful transition process,but given its history with coups,that would a bit of an utopia,not to mention the parallel or discreet role the monarchy plays, simply put, whoever wants to lead Thailand has to bow down to the king,no matter how much they abhor him or the monarchy.

    • @phuminlertpredanan6413
      @phuminlertpredanan6413 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is we don't know what those "unnatural" power are up to at this time. It's obvious that Pita's winning could bring some change in their power, so it is ,in my opinion, really odd for them to not act anything right now. May be they have some deal in the back with their pawns.

    To me, a Thai mother, this year 2023 Thai Election reflects Thai People ability to choose and to let democracy bring society back to real People Right in Free World of Democracy. But we are still just half way, next step concerns how to deal with plans created by the less desirable groups of people who planned to hold on to power regardless.

    I have been skimming through foreign coverage on our election for the last two days since I'm curious what the situation is like when looked from the outside. Too bad not many of my countrymen share the same curiosity. There is much to learn from perspectives beyond our borders.

    • @OrkusReOrca
      @OrkusReOrca ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fellow thai here, I’m curious too :)

    • @mpdg11
      @mpdg11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm Thai and have lived abroad all my life, now based in Europe - so my view/question about all this is, if MFP manages the MP Chair and does face long challenges due to the structural barriers, how easy would it be to sway the supporters and shift their support? Thais can be easily swayed by media discourses - some to the point of withdrawing support before getting the full info. I've seen this among friends and acquaintances who supported the coup in 2014 but now support MFP - just because they believed what was published in the media.
      Support is what change needs the most - and although I am truly for the MFP - my concern here is how ready are Thais to stand beside MFP when things get rough and media slander begins.

    • @ael4n
      @ael4n ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mpdg11 A healthy concern. Worst case scenarios are always possible.
      History indeed suggests that we were easily swayed by the propaganda machines.
      However, the media and the way people consume information have changed drastically. We no longer rely solely on newspapers, televisions and other similarly outdated mediums, which are preferred tools of the power that be. A large chunk of the population now have devices like PCs and smartphones, which means countless alternative sources of information. With access to these sources people are becoming more skeptical and more aware than ever.
      I'm not saying that we are now suddenly immune to manipulation, but that we are now more likely to question what is presented to us.
      Besides, the media slander you mention has already started long before this election. On top of the old ways, the establishments did try their sloppy hand at these new mediums(look up Thai army information operation network), yet we survived that. MFP still won the election. People were quick to catch on to their tactics, because they may have adopted new tools and become more proficient with technology, but their messages stay the same. The only people they managed to fool were their shrinking support base.
      Ultimately what I want to say is, stumbles can happen, but we should have faith in growth of awareness and learning. It is possible the establishments will pull something and Thailand might not become a true democracy this year or even within the next decade, but changes seem to be inevitable. As long as we continue to learn.

These old dinosaur politicians buying off votes, showing up in the farmlands with a case of doughnuts to buy off the poorest of poor, and all the while silently stuffing their pockets with money. Thailand needs a change. This is the best chance for it I have seen in a long long time. I hope the best for Thailand, I hope the people will finally be heard.

    Having lived in Thailand off and on for twenty plus years, at one time seven straight I can say this is the best coverage in a foreign media thus far on Thailand's political - and then some - situation. Maybe not in depth or long enough it does give a clearer picture than most. IMO it is essential for countries to become aware of some of the bizarre political aspects of Thailand. There should be no doubt that at this moment to senate and right wing extremist elements are plotting how to pull the rug out from under the election winners. Let us hope this does not happen. Yes mass demonstrations will occur but the military has never hesitated to crack down on them, on some historical moments shooting unarmed protestors dead in the streets of Bangkok. Thailand could again become a beacon of democracy in the region. Avoiding both the Chinese fake communist government and the US model flawed democracy.

    Help please spread this message to all countries, but now senators now rejecting democracy by not voting for Pitha to form a government. Now the senators do not respect the majority of the people in deciding this election, Senators are betraying the people for their own good "Now thailand is losing democracy at the hands of the Senate appointed by Prayuth 😢😢😢

    Even though the government has not been established, I feel like we, the people, have already won in terms of rising against the military. There are ways for the current power to try and stay. Even by what was written in the constitution. But that would also mean ignoring the voice of the people. That would not go well at all.

    5:55 THANK YOU!!!! As a Thai, that pronunciation has been bugging me! What she said about first names is legit too, though we have been using nicknames most of the time.
    PS: 5 is pronounced ha in Thai. So, nice coincidence hahaha.

    I will give this a few months to just under a year until the military establishment override the election results with whatever justifications they feel the need to provide to the public as to their actions. And most of the general populace will still swallow any justifications that they will provide.
