The amount of “money” that went into this project that didn’t count against the 30k is pretty insane though. Def a rule bender but I’m not Jay Leno so who cares what I say.

@@StevenHawkingsSpitrag I agree, this was not a $30k restoration. However, I bet it was the most amount of effort put into any of the vehicles in the class. You can trip and fall over a 944 in great condition for under $30k, but people like a story, even if the numbers are fudged. The sad part is that some viewers might think they can tackle a rust bucket project like this on a budget while most of us know it's always better to just buy the best example you can afford and start there.
I was incredulous, hopeful, surprised, often in a state of giggle and all-out laughter, then excitement and finally pride somehow as I rode this coaster with you. One of the most fun and wholesome @donutmedia videos ever. The involvement of all these amazing contributors and their hands on this build was epic. Each and everyone of them needs a massive show of love and prosperity to their business. Good job everyone! ❤️

Robbie Layton deserves most of the credit here. He pulled off a miracle paint job that would've blown the entire budget if he didn't donate it.

@@wietske3848not really, other contestants get parts donated, work done by volunteer, etc... it's not easy to completely restore a car for under $30k, it's pretty much always gonna require some donated funds or services.
You do lots of people participating do there own work meaning the parts and labor prices are different when diy and getting it done. They donated the paint job and wouldn’t overpass the budget

I was thinking of it as cheating too, until I realized that if he'd said "my friend did the paint for me" I'd have no problem with it. They both mean essentially the same thing, but one I had a problem with, and the other I didnt.
Jay Leno is a national treasure. He’s inspiring and helping so many car enthusiasts and media creators. The whole episode with all the collaborations really shows how TH-cam has changed the landscape of media.
He’s also just a cool guy. Man helped me fix my brakes when I had to get home one time!

I think that a shared win was a good call. Not everyone has the connections and influence as a donut project, so it's cool they didn't take that away from someone else.
This is the comment I was searching for😂. I love that his build got the props it deserved but you’re totally right. Someone without the donut influence could not have put this build together at that price. Not to mention that 944 was sick.

Great content as usual, guys. I've never done this with a car, but I restore old bicycles, and do custom builds. I can totally relate to this process. Sometimes my builds take years. I chuckled when the guys had to swap the body out, I was expecting that. A real passion project that doesn't cost the world takes special circumstances. Good job.

This was one of my favorite Donut videos in a while. Something about these "less loved" cars getting a second lease on life by people passionate about them is fun and enjoyable.
Robby's stunning paintwork job really draws the eye to that little car, and the work that all the experts, dedicated enthusiasts, fabricators and parts suppliers have done underneath has brought that X-90 alive on steroids! Teamwork for the win there. Top class video production too.

Videos where the Donut crew gets to challenge themselves and live out their dreams are now some of my favorite on this channel, the last time a TH-cam video made me feel like this was when Jerry went pro. Amazing work, thank you donut for sharing these stories and continuing to inspire us
I mean it's kind of hard to say you spent less than 30k when you get thousands of dollars of work done and they say "on the house". if I was competing at a car show and a car that obviously has more than 30k worth of work done enters, Id be pretty pissed. Kind of kills the spirit of the competition.
I 100% agree realistically he spent more like 50 to 60 K but was supporters along the way. I’m happy to see this thing when it’s a very unique car.
Such a great video about a car I didn’t care about until seeing the work that went into it. I swear, the effort people put into their cars makes me love them, even if I didn’t care about them beforehand.

Owner of Multiple X90’s here, the X90 was a dream car of mine since I was a child and I’m happy I get to daily drive one before prices inevitably quadruple. The Miata effect is real and there’s only about 3,000 of these left on the road as opposed to about a million Miata’s.

I remember when they were doing the Buy a Sidekick get a x90 Free promotion. Totally underrated for the time.
I live in Canada. I had a 4x4 maanual x90. Well it was my GF's but it became mine. Changed suspension, put some big tires. This thing was INCREDIBLE in the snow. Everyone would get stuck and i would just be on my merry way. This was in the earl 2000 and me and her were big on rave parties. We had black lights and neons inside, and they would flash following the bass. Installed a super big sound system in that small thing. It was our party machine. Such good memories. It will for ever be one of my most favorite car. Right next to my s12 200sx.

Dude, MASSIVE props to the Robby Layton crew for the free paint job. Anyone who's ever attempted restoring even a relatively rust free body knows how many hours of sanding alone it takes to get things paint ready. That amount of work in such a short time frame....man, I don't have a clue how much that would actually cost. Maybe $10K+ or so? I'm currently watching the video right on his channel, so I guess I might find out soon!
You're putting it a lot better than I could have. I was done with this video after I heard the words, "it's free." One of the hands down most labor intensive parts of this project with ZERO inclination as to what it would cost, even to a fellow TH-camr kinda makes the whole "budget" a wash and a cheat. And I'm reading through the comments that he won?? That's like cheating the numbers and winning a Lemons Race. NOT IMPRESSED.

@@IndieBuildie At the same time though, almost everyone who restores their car tends use the avenues they have available to them to make things cheaper. At some point we've all accepted free help and been the beneficiary of someone's generosity. When it comes to Lemons racing, anyone who competes in them would have to use a ton of freebies in order to stay "within the rules," and I'm sure half of the other people in that competition had well over $30k worth of parts and labor into their cars. That being said, getting a paint job as nice as the one he got for free is a level of generosity that most people will never experience, so I do see where you're coming from with your disdain. However, just like the Lemons cars, I think that the majority of people feel that the importance lies more in the "spirit of the competition" than it does in saving every receipt so that you can prove you've spent exactly $29,998.67 on your build. A lot of people probably feel the same way you do about this kind of thing too though so who knows which way is the right way to look at it.

Don't forget he had a rust-free body in tow to swap out before the paint job. To properly paint the original body would take weeks to complete & could've cost $20k easy.

So, I found out about your adventure through Matt's Off Road Recovery. I decided to watch Robby Layton's videos and this video of yours. I think it goes without saying, that your car couldn't be called "better" than any of the cars in the show. However, no matter how cool they were, not one of them could touch this thing for it's uniqueness and the unbelievable transformation within the time and the money parameters. My opinion is you definitely deserved a win. And it was fun watching you "drive" this car through it's changes. 😍

To me you are the winner, I mean restoring the vehicle while making your way across the country to the competition is something the judges didn't consider. Money talks no body walks
One of my favorite TH-cam videos period. It's inspiring to see this journey from start to finish. From buying his dream car to taking it on an incredible cross country road trip while it was in rough shape back to California. Henry set a goal to compete in the 30 under 30 and had the support from so many awesome people. He met many new faces that cheered him on throughout his journey, had many set backs and never gave up, eventually receiving a first place trophy in his dream car, around his family with the biggest smile on his face. Truly beautiful to see
