Elevate Your Chord Progressions: Mastering Secondary Dominants

  • The current video discusses how to spice up your progressions with secondary dominant chords.
    A dominant seventh chord has a tension-resolving function, typically resolving to the one chord in a major or minor key.
    Secondary dominants involve using dominant seventh chords to lead to chords other than the one chord in a key, adding movement and momentum to a song.
    Warren emphasizes practicing progressions that incorporate secondary dominants to become familiar with this musical concept.

    thank you so much for this. i tried sticking a secondary dominant in the 4-5 progression at "how sweet the sound" in amazing grace and it reminded me of that crazy c# in "jesu joy of man's desiring". you have blown my mind. come to think of it, the c# half-diminished is even closer to "jesu joy of man's desiring" than a secondary dominant. I begin to think that JS Bach was a gospel musician before gospel music was invented.

    4:15 Man, you just opened my eyes! We can use the circle 4th as passing chord as a passing chord to get where we want from the one chord.
    This is a game changer for me, I understand how some people come with these nice progressions. Interesting enough, I understand why Dominant chord chord are used as substitution for minor chords.

    Okay, so I just finished a piano course learning blues piano, and I took a break to learn some GOSPEL. Love your videos man, and if your videos are this good, i can only imagine your courses that are only 1 dollar.
    anyways, I'm watching your intermediate playlists and writing down what I learned so I take note of the videos I watched. Here's what I learned: (Correct me if I am wrong)
    So a secondary dominant is basically a dominant chord, but that dominant chord is used as a PASSING chord right.

  • @errol8505
    @errol8505 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks Warren. Finally the concept of "Secondary Dominant" makes sense to me . Since I am learning the Blues, "Dominant 7" chords are the default chords progression not secondary dominant.
    I want to learn how to comp chords using some secondary dominant . Maybe a course on comping chords using that concept.
    BTW, I bought "Everything About The Blues" on your website . Great Course.

    Warren do you notice a secondary dominant in Thom Bell's orchestration of the song "Since I Been Gone" by The Detroit Spinners? on You Tube. In the intro I am so sure that in his string arrangement he does a modulation with a secondary dominant and in parts throughout the song. Thom Bell as an orchestrator did marvelous symphonic chord progressions that modified the collective psyche of R&B listeners that elevated the social consciousness of the hood in a way that only The Lord Himself would have providentially inspired in this amazing composer. Please respond as this song is my prime example of what I perceive to be a secondary dominant modulation and a strident one at that. The chorus starts singing : Since I been gone who you been loving baby, since I been gone, who you been loving , Since I been gone who you been loving baby, since I been gone At the 3rd "Since I been gone" it sounds like a secondary dominant modulation. Please respond.
