    "Working Man" is the oldest song that they did live and it became their encore song in later years. As you can see it is an exhausting song for them to play. It originally appeared on their 1974 debut album with original drummer John Rutsey - just for comparison sake you should check out the original. It will help you understand why this version is so freakin' cool.
    Rush has a special connection to Cleveland because that is where a young radio DJ by the name of Donna Halper at station WMMS in Cleveland first dropped the needle on "Working Man" and "got the ball rolling". In the liner notes of the Mercury Records release of the debut album there is a "thank you" to Donna from the band. It reads:
    "With Special Thanks to Donna Halper of WMMS in Cleveland for getting the ball rolling"
    There is also a note that reads: "For best results play at maximum volume" - They're not wrong about that.
    The wife and I took the kids to see this tout (Time Machine 2011) at The Gorge at George, Washington (yes there really is a place called George, Washington). I have seen Rush do this song live many, many times beginning in 1976 when I saw their "2112" tour in Spokane, WA.
    The reggae verses are a great example of just how versatile these guys really are as musicians. You are quite right about Alex, by the way. He is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock & roll, in my opinion. His use of suspensions and inversions is legendary. He is also a master of dynamics and a tone genius. His use of volume swells and other dynamics has influenced literally thousands of guitarists around the world. "Jacob's Ladder" is a Lerxst** showpiece along the lines of "La Villa Strangiato"
    **The three band members had nicknames. Alex's nickname is Lerxst. Geddy's was Dirk and Neil's nickname was Pratt. I just thought you might like that little bit of "insider info" from an old Rush fan (I'm 62).

      The Original with Rutsey is what put Rush on radio, it was such a powerful song. It was an introduction that didn't just kick the door open, they blew it off the hinges.

    I see you have answers to the washing machines in the background. Some other things you will catch... Sometimes, on Geddys side of the stage, you might see rotisserie chicken machines, that actually fed the road crew, or Geddy sometimes sports a mini Stonehenge on his keyboard, paying homage to This is Spinal Tap rocumentary. It's also a reminder to not take yourself too seriously. Alex has his own get ups on his side of the stage as well though. I'm still unsure on why he collects dinosaurs, but he has a ton and places them on his amps, and even puts them inside the head. Alex also has his groupie Barbie dolls that sit behind his pedal boards in front of the stable. The road crew leave fun By post it notes and place them in their hands. I always thought it was the setlist, but no, its the crew talking trash. Like, 'I was conceived while my dad was at a Rush concert.' Oh burn. Lol. They are quick to poke fun at themselves during the show, but never does that interfere with why they are really there. Music. 😄

Was wild to see so many other parents taking their kids to the show. Have a take a deep breath when I remind myself that's all over.

    • @lvgelfling72
      @lvgelfling72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dave131 yes i agree. I don't believe i realized, until Neil's passing, how much of my life was dedicated to them. Listening to their music and looking forward to the next show, or tour. To have all of that taken away so suddenly, and to have it taken away by Rushs voice - the one that inspired and got us through hard times, has been more devastating than i could have imagined. I feel like I lost family. I guess it isn't just about the band and the music, because it's also about missing the show's and missing out on all the other Rush fans.... like yourself, who are sharing Rush a new generation of fans. Their last tour, we met a few people that brought their grandchildren! It's a beautiful thing.
      Life does as life does though, I suppose ...and Neil definitely understood that more than most. 😢
      I am sincerely thankful to have witnessed their magic so many times and am forever grateful to my bestie for including me on his Rush journey!!! Im a better person because of them. So happy to hear you got to share your love of Rush with your sons. Those memories will live on forever.

      It's a great story, but unfortunately, not true. Alex is indeed one of the best rock guitarists ever, but Eddie never said that. That story is an urban legend and been said about tons of guitarists. Supposedly, Jimmy Page said it about Prince, Slash said it about Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Tom Morelo said it about Slash. Etc, etc, etc.

    Alex is so often overlooked when people hush about Hendrix, SRV, Page, Gilmore, Beck, Clapton, Winter, The Edge, Lukather.....probably because Peart and Lee get all the attention, but Alex is surely up there in the top 12ni would say. He is SUCH a humble guy though (because he’s Canadian?) and and would probably be embarrassed if you said that to him. If you like instrumentals you have got to review Neil’s drum solo live in Frankfurt. You’ll be amazed at how much musical one person can be on a single instrument not usually known for being melodic. He shows why he is the greatest drummer who ever lived. You will hear what his internal heartbeat sounded like. We’re all drummers from birth. Don’t believe it? The first sounds we make is our heart beat hammering out the sound that will drive the music that we all make. Plus it will melt your face.
