Seeds YOU MUST Sow In June! It's Not Too Late! | Allotment Gardening For Beginners

  • We've already sown lots of seeds at the allotment vegetable garden in the last few months, and June isn't often a month where we think of sowing seeds. Contrary to common belief, there's LOADS of vegetable seeds you can still sow in June, so don't worry if you haven't sown any yet! there's still time!
    With all that being said, though, it is late to sow some things, and June is your last chance to get other things sown if you want to achieve a harvest before the end of the growing season. This is especially true for those who live in the northern hemisphere (like I do) and have short growing seasons.
    There are other things which are ideal for succession sowing so you can achieve steady harvests throughout the growing season. We'll touch on them as well.
    Let me show you what I'm sowing in June in the garden and what I've already sown in the last few months. I hope this video helps you guys out in some way.

    I dont have a slug problem, but I've heard that a shallow pan with beer in it helps. I guess they really like it.

      Lucky you! I envy you haha! I've set up a few beer traps on my allotment and they have trapped a few of them. They're coming in their thousands though this year!

      @downtoearthwithjim I have used granular slug bait in the past because I get snails. It worked pretty good. I have a squash bug and squash vine borer problem and a pollinator problem. The squash bugs I can control, but that vine borer is a different story. I also think I need to get a bee hive so I can have more pollinators.

    i got a way head start for my peppers and chili's this year. started then in a grow box in jan early jan and now many are around the 4ft plus and already harvesting but of course not all that tall as some bush type but this year around 15 types from sweet to mild to very hot so a whole mix and yes could do with more sunny days but it has helped my other crops outside out of my greenhouse , the salad stuff is doing super well in these conditions. just last week i put my 2nd batch of carrots and parsnips and should be ready when colder weather hits , might have few weeks they have to be moved somewhere a bit cooler and this time my 2nd time growing them this year and ever the spacing better so should be even better. the 8 tomato plants in the green house two types doing great just the spare one i moved outside a bit slow but its doing something just taking time to ripen the tomatoes. this year as i was way ahead my best year so far even tho weather been a bit dull. but we heading back in to a la nina and that changing global weather patterns on top that solar activity is going to start to fall what means cosmic rays are back and that an seed clouds so back to conditions a bit like 2010 we had a lot rain if i remember right and more snowy winters but each cycle a tad different but a rough idea what could be on the way over then next few years and low activity then forecast it could be for a decade if not more according to noaa so food growing unless under cover is going to get tricky so just heads up be ready as if noaa correct we are in for a big shock globally

      Sounds fantastic with the peppers! I remember the winters of 2009/2010 were cold. Long overdue another winter like that, but I don't think we will see another that extreme for a while

    I use the 5 litre water bottles for growing Brassica and Cougettes to reduce slug damage as I find the copper pot scrubbers around them inside the bottle tends to keep the slugs off , put some slug pellets inside the bottle and they should be ok, you can also put copper tape around the bottles as another deterent.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting! Those copper pot scourers are a really good idea! I may have to steal that idea, if I had a container that would fit them!

      @downtoearthwithjim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    New sub! Nice leisurely video, with no excessive 'hand waving' which for some reason annoys me lol. All my tomato starts FAILED this year from damping off, but a dozen plants germinated in mid-May and have true leaves coming on, so I'm hoping they catch up! I'll be putting squash in shortly called Baby Blue, which seem doable for me, who will be training them over an arch. USA, Zone 5.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's gutting! I hate when damping off happens. I had some damping off early this year too when growing at home. It's surprising how fast they catch up through June and July so I'm sure you'll still get a crop 😊

    I feel your pain with the carrots, I’ve had to re sow a line of Nantes that were bullldozed, weirdly I’ve got a line of purple carrots right next door that have barely been touched so I wonder if they aren’t so appealing to them like they don’t seem to like red lettuce either.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They seem to enjoy my red lettuce haha 😂 but not as much as the baby gem. I may need to spread sharp sand over the bed next time to stop the slugs. I've just applied some beer traps to my carrot beds see if that works

    • @catsmother4556
      @catsmother4556 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes you can sow leeks in the UK in June. They are cold hardy so can stay in the ground all winter, just harvesting as you need them.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I didn't include leeks as I sowed mine in March but can still be sown in June. I grow Middelburg every year. They will be harvested from autumn and during the winter months like with things such as Brussel sprouts. 😊

    Jim, would using diatomaceous earth help with the slug issue?

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've thought the same. I have loads of diatomaceous earth which I got for the red ants. It'll slow the slugs down as they won't like going over it but it won't kill them and it needs to be dry to be effective. Diatomaceous earth is used to kill insects with hard exoskeletons like ants. Won't kill slugs

      Hi Richard 😊 just watched them now, fantastic update, I've found it's been rather slow for me as well this year. I'd definitely film the videos in landscape for TH-cam and only do them in portrait for shorts. I'm assuming you're using your phone? Get yourself a cheap mic and tripod to stick phone on and then people can watch you pottering about 😊 watch out with the music towards the end of one of your videos as TH-cam is very strict with music and copyright unless you're using licenced music like from epidemic sound.
