The biosecurity practices at these places are a joke. Even housed operations have tons of fecal particulate making it outside and infecting wild animal reservoirs. The reason they don't want people in the broiler sheds is that the chickens are in clear terrible health and suffering. Not good for marketing. The reason they don't want you in egg hatcheries is because they might be in a sexing phase of operation (where they determine whether the hatched chicks are male or female). Anyone visiting at that time will see hundreds of male chicks being killed (because they can't lay eggs and we don't eat the male birds). Bad for marketing. Animal agriculture in the UK is in a right state. They won't want anyone filming any part of it.

Unfortunately many townies have an overly rose tinted view on farming. Farming is a hard, cut throat business with wafer thin margins and no room for sentiment. It is dirty, smelly, back breaking work and is often seen as cruel. Livestock/ poultry are not really creatures they are a product reared to produce a profit. It is in the interest of the farmer/ producer to ensure the product is healthy and grows in the shortest time that is why anti-biotics and growth hormones are commonly used. Until the public are weaned off cheap food this intensive rearing will continue.
Im a Watch Manager in the fire service, he has no choice in us coming to see him its called an SSRI visit and its a legal compulsory thing he has to allow the visit, so its totally different to what you are doing.

I've worked in a lot of hen houses, each house has around 15000 hens in each one, the lighting is programmed to run a 24hr cycle so the hens know when to lay etc, conveyor belts take the poo out from under the hen boxes without anyone having to do it.

If the chicken farm video is recent, I would suggest sending a copy to DEFRA, as there seem to have been several serious breaches of biosecurity measures, which should be in place related to bird flu.
To be fair - These places are dangerous. Heavy plant turning can kill you. You really should not be there. Crushing deaths are still one of the major causes of accidental deaths each year along with fall from height

DJ from my personal experience of Poultry sheds, this farm looks more like a broiler (Meat) farm than breeding farm, There is more food silos for continuous feeding unlike on a breeding farm where they weigh the food out and limit the amount. I believe the water from the pipe was the drinking system flushing to ensure the water stays fresh, and the water from the roof and that pipe is collected into a french drain that runs the length of the shed and then into a tank
Usually when they clean these farms down they will turn a vavle that won't allow water from the drains to flow into the sewage system and instead it is pumped our from a tank where it is collected
I also believe they do not inject eggs at any point, They vaccinate the birds through their water supply and add additional growth supplements into the food supply
I really enjoy your videos DJ, but my first ever criticism, I'm sorry but you didn't actually follow the instructions of the calm guy, he did make it quite clear where to go and in their defence, you did turn right without going straight through the bags as instructed, I do feel in this instance, they had a right to a bit upset, if you both didn't have Hi Vis clothing, you endangered yourselves quite considerably in my opinion. The public is generally not allowed to be inside the sheds fo to the risk of contamination. Broiler farms have to keep a very high hygiene standard do to the fact that the chicken are designated for human consumption. The environment of where the children are kept is kept clean of any foreign bacteria to not have to use antibiotics with the livestock. The interductgion of antibiotics in the food chain is strictly controlled. I know that because I am an ex butcher and we had to learn about it in school. I also save regularly chicken from slaughter and when we got to the broiler farmer we are never allowed inside for the above mentioned reasons.

Unfortunately many townies have an overly rose tinted view on farming. Farming is a hard, cut throat business with wafer thin margins and no room for sentiment. It is dirty, smelly, back breaking work and is often seen as cruel. Livestock/ poultry are not really creatures they are a product reared to produce a profit. It is in the interest of the farmer/ producer to ensure the product is healthy and grows in the shortest time that is why anti-biotics and growth hormones are commonly used. Until the public are weaned off cheap food this intensive rearing will continue.
What a friendly bunch! Do they really deserve the public’s business making them rich? Not a penny! Money doesn’t make them decent, does it?

Nice one DJ @ Alan. A very thorough and fascinating investigation. There’s clearly a lot of environmental and probably ethical issues there that people need to be made aware of. The reactions from some of those owners are an indication that they have something to hide. The pollution in that culvert was shocking.

@@markmarkie1950 Ah yes I understand farmers concerns around theft. There's a huge problem with quad theft where I live. I try to tell the farmers and neighbourhood watch groups near me that I can be an asset to them. Should I see or witness any illegal activities Ill photograph it, film it and pass it onto the police .
Funnily enough some of them still get shirty, even aggressive at times. I assume on those occasions that they are often doing something illegal themselves that they don't want anyone else to see.
One problem we have around here is wildlife persecution by Grouse shoots. Now if you walk on the footpaths around those area, your soon being followed about by the local land owners henchmen,

I've worked in a lot of hen houses, each house has around 15000 hens in each one, the lighting is programmed to run a 24hr cycle so the hens know when to lay etc, conveyor belts take the poo out from under the hen boxes without anyone having to do it.

If the chicken farm video is recent, I would suggest sending a copy to DEFRA, as there seem to have been several serious breaches of biosecurity measures, which should be in place related to bird flu.

Maybe going against the grain here but DJ should have left earlier, the guys asked him about 20 times in the 1st 10 minutes to leave his property and he simply didnt. Not sure how many of you reading this would find that acceptable if this this happened on your back garden
He left straight away.. but it was a 10 minute walk and he was asking questions in the walk, that's why it seemed like he wasn't leaving straight away.

DJ from my personal experience of Poultry sheds, this farm looks more like a broiler (Meat) farm than breeding farm, There is more food silos for continuous feeding unlike on a breeding farm where they weigh the food out and limit the amount. I believe the water from the pipe was the drinking system flushing to ensure the water stays fresh, and the water from the roof and that pipe is collected into a french drain that runs the length of the shed and then into a tank
Usually when they clean these farms down they will turn a vavle that won't allow water from the drains to flow into the sewage system and instead it is pumped our from a tank where it is collected
I also believe they do not inject eggs at any point, They vaccinate the birds through their water supply and add additional growth supplements into the food supply
I really enjoy your videos DJ, but my first ever criticism, I'm sorry but you didn't actually follow the instructions of the calm guy, he did make it quite clear where to go and in their defence, you did turn right without going straight through the bags as instructed, I do feel in this instance, they had a right to a bit upset, if you both didn't have Hi Vis clothing, you endangered yourselves quite considerably in my opinion. Either way I'm not a hater, I do enjoy your videos

The public is generally not allowed to be inside the sheds fo to the risk of contamination. Broiler farms have to keep a very high hygiene standard do to the fact that the chicken are designated for human consumption. The environment of where the children are kept is kept clean of any foreign bacteria to not have to use antibiotics with the livestock. The interductgion of antibiotics in the food chain is strictly controlled.
I know that because I am an ex butcher and we had to learn about it in school. I also save regularly chicken from slaughter and when we got to the broiler farmer we are never allowed inside for the above mentioned reasons.
