It was sad to discover that David and Allison's girls died shortly after birth. They seemed so ready to be the best parents possible to their girls. They'd done so much research into what might be best. It didn't seem as if the loss of both babies so shortly after birth was on their radar. I hope their marriage survived this and that they went on to have a child or children.
I'm only halfway through the episode, and I am so sad to read your comment. I was hoping for a miracle along with them. I noticed the sonogram was dated January 31, 2001 ... so they would have been 23 yo today. 😢 May 2024.
The title makes you think that their babies defied the odds and that they lived. So sad whenever they showed David (deep thinker) his wife almost had to snap him out of it a couple of times. I bet he was in so much deep thought about how they're going to look when they are born or if they're even going to make it WHEN this should be the happiest time of they're lives, excitement of having a baby!! I can't believe the babies died. I hope they are still married with children. Doesn't seem like her husband is the strong one out of them two.

The Lawlers seem like sweet, innocent people. I can understand being hopeful but they seemed naive in their confidence that it would all work out in the end. The situation is so deeply philosophical and spiritual. Love isn’t a rational thing and life is always unpredictable. I had a healthy child who died of cancer in young adulthood and it taught me that you just don’t know what will happen.

Where they say a baby will not live till so many days or years and they end up living way past the Doctors prediction and are still alive. I don't think it was being naive at all. It is not an easy decision to abort and if they did, they would have lived with regret thinking did they do the right thing. They were not sweet, innocent people. They were human beings like all of us and if you were put in that situation, would it be easy for you to just make a decision just like that? So, if a couple decided to abort then they are not sweet and innocent? They are smart and wise?

I just thought the degree to which this couple was optimistic seemed naive. It felt almost like it was hopeful beyond was realistic. But that is just my reaction. They told me my failure to thrive son that was born missing some digestive enzymes and he is nonverbal autistic and developmental disabilities and is almost 32 . I was told that he probably would die and that if he lived he would have to be cared for like a baby for his entire life boy were they wrong. He feeds himself dresses himself brushes his teeth does most of his showers and shaving puts his clothes away and makes his bed.He’s a miracle and I would not stop working with him

Conjoined twins that share a heart never survive. The heart can't keep up with both conjoined twins. Its too hard and too much on the heart. No conjoined twins that shared a heart have ever survived. That's why the babies didn't survive. Other conjoined twins survive because they have separate hearts and other organs helping the organs to keep up with both twins. The hearts are able to pump enough to keep both twins alive.

Also I don't think that parents of twins should dress their twins in identical clothes- maybe once in awhile but not always. They should be treated as individuals!!!

How does the two male black children live with them only having 1 liver before separation? I know parts of it can regrow itself over time, or even repair damage to itself but that would be minimum 50% left of a liver for one child assuming it was split in half? That is amazing, especially seeing them play in the Gym and needing to be on separate teams or else they'd always win lol.
I find it hard to agree bringing conjoined twins in the world when you know in advance. I wouldn’t want to subject them to surgeries that are so life threatening.
They should determine whether or not separation is possible early in the pregnancy. If it's not, the humane thing is to abort. Nobody should have to live chained to another person. Also if one of an unseparateable set doesn't want to live, they shouldn't have to. The surgery should be done and the other twin saved.

I have no idea how old this documentary is, but Hassan seems incredibly withdrawn and depressed during these interview segments. If you notice, his twin does all of the speaking unless Hassan is asked a direct question. (I don’t think I have them messed up but they also say Hassan is more extroverted and I see the exact opposite). There is a deep sense of remembered trauma and loss from the separation, even though they were only 8 months old. Science now knows that the bodies keep score of trauma from surgeries and during younger ages, despite having zero conscious memories.
Chang and Eng Could have been separated when one died but the doctor was too far away attending a delivery and arrived too late to save the other twin.😕

In simple terms, Conjoined twins are made when one embryo separating into two does not split at the exact moment it is supposed to. There is nothing one can do or can not do to prevent this!
