I was born & bred in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, My father & brother worked at the Vickers Armstrong Navel & Neptune Yard.I served my time at Vickers on Scotswood Road. This fantastic song & video show the heritage of the river, the Tyne is not what it used to be, but i am so proud to be apart of this

I don't know how many people will recognise this, but that's one of the greatest love-songs ever written.

This song always reminds me of my dad, who worked for more than 40 years in the Cork dockyard...i know its a long way from the toon but the song is in my heart.

Love this song. It is one of my favorites as it tells the story of a life through the eyes of a boy and the pride instilled in his heart. Wow. It doesn't get much better. Dreams only die when you let them.

I know this is the Tyne but I imagine it’s the Humber because it says everything about my childhood too. Dad worked so hard to feed us all in a time when things were very hard. He may be gone now but just like the river it’s in my heart. Thank you Jimmy this is a fantastic rendition.

Born in Gateshead 1940. I was a Plater and know what Jimmy's is talking about. But I left Tyneside for a better life for my family in NZ. I've no regrets but I'm a Geordie and nothing will ever change that and I'm proud of my family. They raised me without bitterness and gave me values of self respect and hard work that meant I would never live on the dole. Edd

Great vid. Love this song since it has special intonations for me. I worked as a stevedore for nisan for 2 1/2 years working 12 hour nights loading cars on ships. Was a good laugh with the lads but being agency we were tret like shit. There was some ammount of larking about, hand-breaking micra and clasics round the decks of mother ships. Pay= hopeless, prospects=nil but The cameradery was great. Hope all the lads are doing ok where ever they are now... the shifts are probably dried up.

It is a sad song. It was terrible what the governments have done to north. Generations of ship builders and miners all tore from what they knew. And cast aside. I'm Lancashire folk. But hopefully we will see glory days return.

The new Queen Elizabeth is being christened today in Southampton where I live. I will hear fireworks, music, and, celebrations. I cannot see anything to celebrate. The Tyne could of had, still could have some of this British market. Our renewable projects will be slowed by lack of ships. Yet Mitsubishi wants to build them, but not over here, and EU countries, but not over here, why not a new Swan Hunters, why not!. All are more expensive than us given the same facilities, and they know it too.

Not just ships for British shipowners - I visited the Maritime Museum in Tokyo Bay a few months ago. Saw a scale model of a big old steam ship made for the Emperor of Japan. Made me really proud to be British. Proud and sad at the same time.

Only heard this for the first time a few days ago, and made it's mark as an expat from the area. Remember the shipyards and their decline in the 1970's and 1980's thanks to the Far Eastern competition and a lack of support from successive Governments. It's being regenerated now, but has none of the former character it had in it's heyday.

There is an old saying " Every Picture Tells A Story" and that is truly the case here. In these photograph's we see the history of the working people of the North East. Proud, hardworking people who's sweat and toil helped to make this country one of the wealthiest in the world. Then we see the photo's of the rewards for all thier labour. The Jarrow Hunger March....the deserted and derelict shipyards...and now the coalmines have gone too. May the rich parasit's who who caused this hardship rot
