Listening to this always brings a lump to my throat. Not a Geordie, but lived and worked on Tyneside during the 1970's including a short spell at William Press, Howden. Still revisit the place, it's an important part of my own history, and the river itself has played and important part in our nation's history - truly a 'Big River'.
I love this piece of Northeast history- and Jimmy Nail's song brilliantly sung, sums up exactly how we all felt about the shipyard closures. A place where sons followed fathers for many generations.

My parents and grandparents worked at NEM, the Slipway and Neptune yard at various times. I feel like this compilation is a good tribute to them and so many more of my fellow Wallsenders. Well done!

Nice to see these photos. The Battleship at Palmers is probably HMS Lord Nelson. My late mother was related to the Palmers and remembered being taken to the yard often as a treat to see 'grandather's workmen' leave at clocking off time
Esso Hibernia, 3rd Tyne Sea Scouts, some of us had the privilege of using echo -sounder to measure the depth of where it was alongside. We then worked for Gibraltar Council while enjoying our holiday. HMS Rooke was great. Mucho scran, and excitement. We visited the massive caves that had military stores plus the sunshine was fine. Thanks Mr P Denholm-Christie. And I remember Alan Walker took those tasks seriously! Retrieved the engine Avon boats oh and we were on local tv news too.
Thanks for that. Just tooling around and found it by chance. I live in China now but was brought up around Wallsend and Shields. Served an apprenticeship with a refrigeration company in Gateshead and worked on lots of ships. Brought a lump to my throat.
Very good video My Father worked at swans for twenty six years and worked on ships like esso Northumbria and ark royal so many thanks brought some memories back Cheers
I sailed on the Vortigen a few times going on holiday to Oostende. It was one of the last ships built for British rail to carry trains it had rail tracks in the car decks. From this video it was built at Swan's apparently it has now been scrapped, sad.
so sad to see ship builers & dry docks go , only thing left is a very small fishing fleet which will soon be gone throu eec quoters, then it will be all houseson the banks of the tyne from newcastle to tynemouth , no room left for industry there now
Arc Royal 1985?? must have came home for repairs as I was at the launch circa 1980/81 We then went to Tynemouth to wave it off for good. I got beaten up inside the pier in total darkness,lol,happy days!! Great pics,cheers for taking the time to put them all together for sharing!!
Hi Mark you must be older than I thought as the picture of HMS Nottingham was dated 1917 you obviously have had a charmed life, but then again I suppose it's your mates who keep you looking young.

This river is going to rise again. Shipbuilding is very viable on the mighty Tyne and the North East in general. Jaap Kroese was very wrong, but probably heart broken when he said it's the end in the UK. It bloody isn't. Too many vested interests and defeatest politicians (with vested interests) have had too much say. Why did the MARs ships go to South Korea. It's not value for the taxpayer, it's eu regs. But Germany (Italy and Netherland too) has gotten away with it with the Berlin type 702.

Love this song and the memories of his youth. I have never been but I love the history and the people love their homeland. I like the accents also.

Sad song with great lyrics. I’ve been to dry dock many a time on the Tyne on the RFA ships. Spending many a good day in the Hole in the Wall pub 🥴🥴😜
I worked in the yard next to Swans we used to use the pub ship in the hole lunch times.The get ack before the shut the yard gates in 1998

i worked at swans dry dock 19 60-63 met a great man chas chandler talked about music and women for 3 years oh happy days j vincent edwards

A common mistake, you called it the river Tyne, Tyne means river in ancient Brythonic. You have called it the river river.
