    I've caught 2 tagged bass in my life. They were both smaller fish so I didn't really know what to do with the tag. The first one I just released it and didn't take the tag, the second one I cut off and took it home. Both tags were coated in slime and one of them was actually dragging a couple feet of seaweed in it. The tag I took home I cleaned it off and it was from something called Littoral Society and it was tagged in Raritan Bay. Probably much easier to get info nowadays with the internet at our fingertips.

    This is interesting to me because it's something I've never tried. I grew up catching all the normal stuff on the beaches and bay in Florida but now I'm by the Chesapeake Bay in VA. I need to learn how to catch stripers.

    Back in the early-mid nineties we used to catch a lot of tagged fish in Cape Cod Bay. I got them originally tagged anywhere from North Carolina to Maine! Also got a few hats, and a couple of cash prizes. I think that when they first declared them recovered in the early nineties from the bad times in the eighties the tagging efforts slowed so you don't see as many tagged fish now as the early-mid nineties.
    Keep up the good videos, and I'm especially glad to see the aluminum boat being used...I've been an aluminum fan for almost thirty years, had a 17' Discovery (made in upstate NY) for twenty years and currently run a 23 Pacific.

      @comfortablynumb9342 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I know a couple old salts that tag fish around the Chesapeake. I'm not sure about stripers because I haven't seen any caught, much less with those guys around. But I have helped them both tag a couple hundred redfish and trout, and some flounder and black sea bass. They have to be over a minimum size to tag. Last fall at the local pier the trout and redfish bite was on fire and we tagged over 200 fish because everyone was catching fish and letting them tag the shorts. I've been here almost a year now and it's awesome to help with fish research. I fish most days after work and I grew up catching fish in Florida so I like to help the fish.

    Hey Skinner, Did you modify the smiling bill jig mold to use a swing hook? Are you using #2 brass eyelets? What hook are you using? I'd like to do the same with the ultra minnow mold. Any tips? Thanks.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I had this mold custom made in the 90s because at the time I couldn't get a mold for 4-ounce or heavier bucktails that I sometimes needed when fishing ocean inlet jetties. I think they're #2 eyelets. An 8/0 hook, but I can't remember the model.

      Good eye. I don't like to do that and don't normally do it but I wanted to be able to switch quickly to a 3-way rig if I wanted. With two guys it would require 6 rods to have 2 each of spoon, 6-ounce jig, and 3-way. I have only 4 of those outfits.

      Now that I think about it, that helps answer a question we've had - are those eastern Sound fish Hudson or from the southern coastal grounds? There was some thought that the Hudsons didn't go east of Wading River, but I don't know about that.

    John, that fish should have been released. You just destroyed the tracking of the fish. What's the sense in tagging fish if you bring them home for dinner? Hopefully you learned from your mistake. And then the free hat😅

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From USFWS, the organization that tagged the fish: "If you catch a tagged striped bass, please cut off the tag if needed and record the date, location, and method of capture." There was no way the information on that tag could have been read without a thorough cleaning. Even then I needed a lighted magnifier to get all of the numbers. The other organization I've caught striper tags from is the Hudson River Foundation. They also say to cut off the tag. In a perfect world the tag would be legible enough to read off a live fish and the info could be retrieved and the fish released, but that's not always the case. BTW - that's the first bass I've harvested in at least 10 years.
