    Modern Jetex replacement engines are available under the TSP brand at Sierra Fox Hobbies. The rocket motor equivalent to that shown in this video is the TSP L-2.

    My dad had some of those from the early fifties. I loved those things as a kid in the seventies, and the fuel and wicks were still good. I'm glad they're back.
    That was an amazing flight, particularly when it crossed the moon. Beautiful. Great video.

      Unfortunately this project seems to have hit a dead end, however the new TSP engines are starting to show up in the US in small numbers and will likely become a full replacement for Jetex.

    Very nice. I built a Jetex powered delta plane from Boy's Life magazine back in the 1960's (or maybe the 50's). I think it was a Model 50 Jetex. Good grief, I am old! I'll build another one when the engines become available.

    Way back in the day, I had a Jet-X Donald Campbell Bluebird and could never get the Jet-X motor to work no matter how I tried, major frustration and disappointment. I ended up using the fuel pellets simulating model plane crashes, burning tanks and of course army men, 😁. It's great to see one in action and know that they do work after all.👍👍👍👍👍

    It's nothing remotely like the original Jetex, it's just a scaled-down Estes rocket engine with no ejection charge. No wonder they "failed to find a sufficient market" and shut down. It's a shame though, if I'd known about it I'd have bought some.

    • @lr21643
      @lr21643 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looks like a longer motor run, with less thrust, to me. Estes motors don't usually provide thrust for very long.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They had no trouble finding a market. They did get caught in conflicting federal regulations which killed the project. Fortunately TSP has sufficient funding and have passed the regs. The notion that these are inferior to Jetex because they are so simple is foolish. The entire point is that they are easy, safe, and reliable. If you want finicky old style Jetex units over this, you need to take a look in the mirror.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wrapping definitely looks similar but they are vastly different inside. Engines are not reusable, for a variety of safety and manufacturing reasons, but the new TSP motors from Europe are pretty inexpensive given the total impulse they deliver.

    But "Jet-X" was the name used by Powermax in Britain when they introduced a new Jetex-type motor - the 50-Z and 100-z. around about 1996. I had both models but never ran them - their fuel was said to be 'unreliable.' Has the name been used again? Is that allowed?

    I have some original metal Jet-ex 50 engines and several vintage (NOS) blister packs of fuel pellets, fuses and asbestos gaskets. 2 pellets burn for 14 seconds. I have a larger jet engine which I have had since the 1960s, a Dynajet pulse jet engine. My main interest is old model diesel (compression ignition) engines which were not very popular in the United States. Americans favoured glowplug engines but needed a 2v battery to get them going. I find free flight and rubber powered models more rewarding. R/c is OK but gets boring and predictable after a while.

      About 5 years ago I was in contact with a group of guys who where working with a ROCKET SCIENTIST located in Mojave California. He was trying to reverse engineer the formula for the old JETEX fuel pellets. And the group was trying to make a new RAPIER single use engine. Did this effort have any connection with the old group??

    • @jet-xflyhigher.flyfaster.6666
      @jet-xflyhigher.flyfaster.6666 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidpuissegur1263 - I think you are referring to the "Jetex Propulsion Lab" efforts led by Ed Brown. While the new Jet-x is not associated with the JPL effort in any direct way, we did review and learn from their research. Their objective was to create a direct competitor to "Rapier" engines which was a mature and complex product selling into an experienced market. Since most of the modelers in the US are unfamiliar with Rapier engines, we took a different approach and focused on creating a product that was easier to manufacture. It still took us over two years of research and a lot of failed experiments before we discovered a product that we could bring to market. If interested please sign up for our upcoming crowd funding campaign here: mailchi.mp/259ae114f84c/jet-x

      @@jet-xflyhigher.flyfaster.6666 I know the motors are not available but what target date are you shooting for in regards to the KITS and T shirts? I've been waiting for a rebirth of JETEX since the 70s. Many times in the 1960s I burned my fingers on a JETEX 50 Hell-Cat motor. It was such a great hobby for young kids to learn from. Since Estes won't get into this part of the Hobby you should have a ready market waiting for these motors. Since they are made in the USA the US buyers shouldn't have a big problem with shipping. It's all those European buyers that are going to have to figure out how to get a modern replacement for the old RAPIER Motors. And the Europeans are going to want a source for the NEW motors. Good luck with the startup funding.
