  • South Africa faces a stark reality as the continent’s largest greenhouse gas emitter. More than 80% of power generation comes from coal, with 11 coal power plants turning the province of Mpumalanga into one of the most polluted areas of the world. As the world moves away from fossil fuels and major global investors pull out, renewable energy fights to forge the future. The tension is palpable among the government, coal producers, workers, and the environment in a post-apartheid South Africa facing pressing developmental challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality.
    00:00-02:27 Introduction
    02:27-08:35 Coal's Impact on Health
    08:35-12:14 Government Mismanagement of Coal

Gosh those are large seams of coal! Looks to be of good quality too.
Coal can indeed be burned cleanly - it's simply a game of politics that's destroying the industry.
Coal is one of the most useful compounds on the planet.
Today the world has an over-reliance on gas. Gas is used for all sorts of things and not just plastics or heating but did you know, coal can do exactly the same thing? Coal can provide us with everything that gas can.

Its a shame that mining of any type leads to acidic mine run off if rocks containing sulfuric compounds are present. Its a shame that acidic mine run off ruins the health of water ways and the resulting particulate matter of heavy metals harm invertebrates and vertebrates and will also destroy crops. It's a shame that to counter the death of crops, more fertilizers will often be applied resulting in further desertification and eutrophication when the fertilizer makes its way into a water way.
Not to mention massive surface area disruption.

It's easy to say switch to a cleaner source but much harder to get the tens of billions in investment and build the massive skill base needed to create a cleaner energy source for a country.

Declining world market for coal? Demand for coal has never been higher. The price in July 2022 is over $400 per ton.

Its weird how the secunda plant isnt mentioned. Bc its why Mpumalanga is one of the worst emitters.

Even if climate change is not caused by co2 from fossil fuels like if it was actually caused by CFCs or nitrogen oxide instead. Phasing out coal is still needed for a sustainable future, this video proves it.

I know it sounds insensitive but why would you live in a place dangerous for your children to live? Hell why would you live in a place dangerous for yourself especially when you know it dangerous. If you don’t have the information I understand but when you know what the cause is, why remain?

During the early days of the Apartheid, there was a tax passed that made every rural village have to pay more money per house on the land. This led many rural people (they often worked as farmers) to move to urbanized areas centered around mining, becoming low wage workers for the Afrikaners and the Randlords (first generation wealthy European immigrants). However, there were also laws passed restricting these people to live a set distance away from the mines and in compact unsafe areas.
While the Apartheid ended in 1994, the economical and racial gap is still extremely felt and communities remain intensely divided. It is very much a lack of resources. Even if residents of these places do have access to the information, and I have no doubt they are aware they are living somewhere unsafe, they usually simply do not have the time or energy. When you are living every day trying to survive, you simply cannot move somewhere safer.

@@salumzansi There is nothing wrong with being privileged, but there is something wrong with ignorance. Privileged people are mostly people who don't get more than two children.

A solar farm was presented to s.a from russia years ago. They said no thanks . Why? Coz that means mining contracts tenders will be lost... logistics trucking... miner jobs. Purchasing etc
